BLOODBATH

01. Blasting the Virginborn

03. Sick Salvation
04. Mouth of Empty Praise

Sweden's BLOODBATH just keeps on churning out their modernized old school (if that makes any sense) brand of death metal. Yet the detractors are sure to bitch when they find out that new EP "Unblessing the Purity" no longer includes what many considered to be the driving force of the act, Dan Swanö. But I'm not here to judge the merits of that decision, unless of course he caused a noticeable drop in quality from "Nightmares Made Flesh" to "Unblessing the Purity", and I wouldn't go that far. OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt's steps in for HYPOCRISY's Peter Tägtgren and gives an awe-inspiring death metal vocal performance too.

The follow up to that fine full-length holds its own and the four-song, 15-minute EP is well written and devastatingly heavy. Though "Nightmares Made Flesh" isn't exactly lo-fi, the edges still have some roughness and the blades are serrated. For as overwhelmingly heavy as "Unblessing the Purity" may be, the recording does sound a bit slicker. However, I don't find it to be a problem and in fact, there is a thickness and fluidity to the recording that gives it a somewhat unique sound. The rhythm section of bassist Jonas Renske (KATATONIA) and Martin "Axe" Axenrot (OPETH) is warm, fat and full of thud.

The quartet of dark ditties is well written and unrelentingly brutal. The combination of blasting destructiveness, morose chords, and compositional shifting on "Blasting the Virginborn" works exceedingly well. The leads are ominous as hell, something you'll find on every song. In fact, "Mouth of Empty Praise" boasts an especially alluring guitar solo that serves as a kind melancholy contrast to the angriness heard everywhere else. Those eerie tones are heard yet again on "Weak Aside", a dense, crunching tune that is even moderately catchy. "Sick Salvation" may be the best of the bunch, a song led by one of the EP's most muscular riffs. Something about Åkerfeldt's vocals — the inflection and some of the patterns – vaguely reminded me of something that Piotr and VADER might do.

"Unblessing the Purity" is a convenient disc to have around when you need a quick death metal fix, but don't feel like indulging for 35 minutes. I wouldn't pick the EP over "Nightmares Made Flesh", but there is no question that BLOODBATH's quality standard has been met with this one. I'm interested to hear the next full-length.

I agree with this review: it is not the best work Bloodbath has delivered to date. But still, it contains so much quality that a mere 7,5 seems a bit poor. 8 / 8,5 is more like it.
And to imply the departure of Swano as a bloodletting goes too far. Some of the best songs on Nightmares were written by Blakkheim anyway. And let's not fase out Renske. I prefer his additions to Bloodbath far more over his melancholy in Katatonia.

Now on to the next full length!

One of the straight-up heaviest releases this year. Mike steps up to the plate and delivers the best vocal performance Bloodbath has ever recorded. Glad to have him back.

While it is better than 'Ressurection', it is no where near as good as 'Nightmares.' Tägtgren is a much better and more versatile vocalist when it comes to this type of music. Åkerfeldt did a good enough job, but Peter should have been on it rather than doing more Pain.

"Mikael Akerfeldt's growling vocals suck balls."

Ouch, that hurts my heart!

I prefer Nightmares, but was very curious as to what Akerfeldt's vocals would sound like on a Bloodbath album that had a decent production (as i think the albums he did sounded poo-poo). I think it turned out great! I'm looking forward to the full-length.

I'm totally getting my ass out to Party-San to see em this summer!!!

Some people aren't impressed with Akerfeldt's vocals? What?! They are benchmark death metal vocals right there. Some people are never happy.

Can't wait for the album - I really like the direction they're moving in on this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the first couple releases (icetyrant, "Nightmares" better than "Resurrection"? Really? Let's agree to disagree, then) but this EP is missing something for me. And I don't necessarily think it's Swano (although I did like his songs..."Like Fire" is a must own for everyone into death metal), I'm just not as crazy about the new musical direction. I'd also give it a 7 or an 8.

I do hope they tour though, it would be wicked to see them in a club (especially if they pull out the old shit).

...there's a thought... if Åkerfeldt leaves Bloodbath again they could get Lindberg in - that could make for a colossal album!

NMF would have been better with Mike. I only liked a few tracks from that. Ressurection was way better. This one sounds the best though. Mikael has some of the best evil death vocals in metal today and he lets it out here. The only thing that sucks is there are only four tracks.

Having Akerfeldt back alone makes this ep (and the album forthcoming) a must have. Resurrection Through Carnage was a far better album than Nightmares made flesh. Akerfeldts death metal vocals are some of the best, to bad there were so few on Opeth's latest stinker. I thought Ghost Reveries was a step in right direction, but this latest album proves Opeth has become a formula driven pseudo Prog metal band.

This ep really delivers, it is a masterpiece!

that comment from alax has got to be one of the most idiotic ones I''ve heard on here,if people don't understand the direction Opeth has taken ,TOUGH SHIT,CHEW HARDER. Dr. Claw needs to get his head out of his ass and really listen to Watershed. When will people ever understand that Opeth was never a band that is strictly about being a bruuuutal death metal band. Thats such a one dimensional mentality. It's sad to see so many metal fans are that closed minded. Every good band gets a little expirimental at some point in their career. Anyway,it's time for a "Fathomless Mastery" reveiw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I liked the sound of the previous lineup better. For some reason their new sound makes it harder to hear the nuances of the guitar work. Personally, I like Peter's vocals better, but those comments aside, this EP is amazing, and better than 90% of the other stuff out there, which is why it's a 9/10.
