Let me make the first post on here a reasonable one. I grew up with Metallica, they were my favourite band through and through for a long time.
I was quite excited for this album, the riffs I heard in the samples sounded pretty damned good.
However, after a few thorough listen throughs, I found that the riffs themselves were the best parts and the overall composition just wasn't as good.
That being said, if you're a fan of Metallica, you will like this album. You'll be a bit disappointed, but it's certainly not a bad album.
Good album, but not their best.

I think this is quite a good metal album. Is it Metallica's best? Clearly not, but much better than most of the drivel that's out today. From what I heard when listening, I hear a band re-energized from the absolute garbage that is St. Anger. They seem to have a new spark about them for wanting to play heavy and fast again, but this time, making sense. I would say the weak points of the album are part of The Day That Never Comes, and Cyanide, other than that I can't really fault it. Either you like it or you don't. I think it deserves better than a "C" grade of 7.5, if I had to rate it, I would give it an 8.5 or 9.

I haven't given it a thorough listen...but I have listened to it. And it is a pretty good album. But then again....I like St. Anger. After I listen to it with a closer ear I'm sure I'll like it even more. Most of the problems are coming from people not liking the sound (production, etc.). The new one from The Haunted is much more to my liking. But....kick ass music is kick ass music. And this will probably fall into that catagory. Kirk's soloing again. That's always a high point.
I'll buy it. And I did download it first. If you say you didn't ....you're fuckin' lying.

The production might not be too flash but let us all remember one thing that there is....

I did.
I give it a 10 because, I'm enjoying the hell out of it... Is the production perfect? No... but, it doesn't ruin the album for me... In fact, if it sounded too perfect, it might lose a bit of it's edge... I don't know. We'll never know because, it is what it is...
Even if you don't like Unforgiven III (which I do... I didn't like it at all at first but, it's grown on me... I'm really digging the theme/lyrics on it and, I find myself singing it alot... That alone tells me all I need to know... I've been going around, singing the songs and, when I'm not listening to the album, I WANT to hear it... That's why I gave it a 10... because, the album's made me feel like a kid again and, I REALLY love the songs... ALL of them...)
Some will love it. Some will hate it... Some will be lukewarm to it. I, for one.... love the album... It's made music exciting for me again, in a way I haven't felt in a while. For that, I have to thank the mighty Metallica. They've invited me on another wild ride and, I'm enjoying it.

It's definitely a repeat-listens album, and as skaryguy said, it's going to be AWESOME to hear these songs live, especially The Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long, and That Was Just Your Life.
10, because I can't give it a 100.

I won't write a long one, I'll just say I give this album 10/10 not only because I can but because it deserves it.
I'm a HARD critic of anything that passes through my ears, Even Metallica material. When I'm saying after just one listen of the album that it's good, you've done a good job.
I've gone out of my way musically and listen to a lot of everything from JS Bach to 2Pac to Johnny Cash to Metallica to ZZ Top. Metallica's never going to recapture what they had in the 80's but if this album is the worst they could come up with, We're in for one hell of a ride.
Metallica, you guys did good.

Basically sums up everything i wanna say about it.
The production for me is the big elephant in the room... Someone needs to sit down and tell these guys how painful it is to listen to an amazing album that sounds like shit. Get Robb from Machine Head to teach them about production...Imagine Death Magnetic with the production values of The Blackening...

calling this album mediocre would be paying it a compliment. Sounds like a bunch of tired old men who have completely ran out of ideas and couldn't string a good riff for the life of themselves anymore.
The production is awful and guitars sound weak and unheavy. Good to hear Kirk Hammett play some solo's again but they are just bland and uninteresting.
All in all, if this is the best Metallica can do after so many years, then calling them "washed up" would be the understatement of the century.

Who would have thought ten years ago that Metallica would even come close to making this record? There is some fantastic songwriting here. And Rob's bass is fine. The production is primal and raw. It's the mixing that suffers. (I guarantee it will be mastered lower in later pressings.)
This album stands up to the classics and is in a class of it's own. Death Magnetic will be seen as one of the best albums of the decade. This is one hell of an achievment. And just in time to lead the thrash revival as they lead the 80's thrash scene.
The haters are going to be REALLY outnumbered now. And that's sweet!

I got this yesterday - a little miffed to discover that the special edition doesnt have a dvd in it, but, oh well.
I think ive listened to it about 6 times in whole, and its definately growing on me, currently listening to 'the day that never...' at around 5.02 - Heavy! The songs that everyones talking about are the best. The new unforgiven sounds like a load of shit to me at the moment, but hey, it may change.
It's slightly ironic to me that the first Metallica album i ever heard, hell, the first Metallica i EVER heard was St Anger, and in 5 years ive devoured all of their classics KEA-Black album, and nothing else.
Im glad theyve put this out, guess what,

Actually, this is a decent review. Pretty much spot on. The production clips horribly, the songs are mediocre but the sign of a band that's actually trying after so many years of running on auto pilot. The album is mediocre at best, but a vast improvement on their last decade's work.

8 out of 10 from me. Its a good return to form for Metallica, heavy, angry fast, I think its great!! Of course its no Master of Puppets but as the review said, they will never do that again. Good review, I agree with most of it but I actually LIKE the production...they have simply recorded everything as "hot" as they can, its bordering on distortion but not quite. Its fucking great to be able to listen to Metallica again with a smile on my face, havent done that for a hell of a long time.

I gave it a generous 5. Why? Because i was pleasantly surprised about this album because at least it sounds like Metallica now. Despite its high points, it gets incredibly dull at points. The riffs are overplayed and boring. Lars still uses the same simple and boring, generic drum techniques he's been using since Kill em All. The production is horrible! What were they thinking? Either they've lost their good ear for music or they made a really bad decision by working with the wrong sound tech. The guitar sound it boring and not crunchy enough, the snare is too loud and the drums frequently clip when too distorted. I mean c'mon! These are really basic sound engineering issues to get passed. The worst part are the solos! Sure he's soloing again but they are extremely boring and unimaginative solos all in the E pentatonic scale. Geez. Kirk: Overrated. The whole recording just sounds like its a good recording of them jamming. Not well produced or thought out. But hey! James' vocals are a bit better this time around.

No way and I don't think its possible to even come close to that sound again, but they at least have thrown out the Load/ReLoad shit sound (and whatever the hell St. Anger was) and written a Metallica album.

I am completely and utterly in the "pleasantly surprised" category with this one. There is an air of calculation to the CD, to be sure-you can almost hear the band saying to themselves "which classic are we trying to sound like now, and oh yeah, don't forget the long instrumental!"-but the fact that they're even ATTEMPTING something like this, at this stage of their career, is fucking amazing. There's a strangely addictive quality to it; I haven't stopped playing it since I downloaded it last week, and even though I have issues with it-the production is horrible, the lyrics on some songs make me cringe, the common complaints about Lars' drumming and Kirk's constant wah wah abuse-I still love the fucking thing.
8/10 is my score, but I voted it a 10 just to counteract the inevitable run of Metallica haters who will give it a 1 unheard.

They aren't going to make any of the first 4 albums again. I really don't want them to either. With that said, this album is a great listen. While it is mastered for the new generation, you can still hear all the layers, and this album has some intricicies that reveal themselves after repeated listening. I really think iPods/mp3 players in general have killed the way music is mastered today, I almost wish bands would release two masters, one for the iPod generation, and one for those of us who know how to use an EQ and volume control of a decent stereo system.
There is definitely new life brethed into Metallica. How else would they cover the theme of death with so much ease? This is not as good as the first 4, but not to many albums are. I will put this above the black album, because it really does seem like Metallica is hungry again, and you can hear it throughout this album.... One final note .... Kirk is on fire throughout the whole damn thing.

It is not that the MP3s have destroyed music, research has. Basically music that sounds louder is usually considered better. That being said it is a common practice to over compress the shit out of the wav form and you end up with a sonic stick of butter. Ruben is one of the worst offenders of this, RHCP californiacation being one of the most notable over compressed cds ever.
I cant say I like it but it is just how they do it now, and mp3s have nothing to do with it. The desire to shove more and more hit music down the throats of the public is the problem.
Also death magnetic is pretty impressive surprisingly. I figured they were going to phone it in. I felt like slipknot did that with all hope is gone.

I agree with him on 2 issues.
-Unforgiven 3 should have been removed.
-Production should have been improved.
And a personal third would be to include the song Holy Revolver in place of U3.

As a 20+ year 'tallica fan...I couldn't have said it better myself.
To hit on a few points..
That was just your life IS very "Justice" like.
I was also LISTENING to hear the awesome bass riffage from Rob, but couldn't (maybe, I just can't hear anymore).
I also agree The Unforgiven III needs to be forgiven! (Sorry, Jaymz)
I also TOTALLY agree with the comments on Rick Rubin and his Engineer.. I say BRING ON ANDY SNEAP !!
DEATH MAGNETIC !!! \m/ \m/ !!!

Gave it an 8. All the songs are great except The Judas Kiss, which really let me down. When I first heard the chorus on the Mission Metallica trailer, my hopes were very high but the song has a few average riffs and doesn't flow very well. Other than that, no complaints except for the poor production, but I'll get over that.

I love the "good song, shitty production" lines repeated over and over. Gotta have something to bitch about, don't ya.
I gave it a 10. Is it better than puppets, no. It's different altogether. BTW, back in the day, no one was giving puppets such high regard either. It is a great piece of music who's legend has grown ever since. My overall opinion of DM is that the music can stand up, and be played live, right beside the classic material without seeming out of place(unlike st. anger material whether you liked it or not).
I can hear the bass in this record just fine, and in many more places than newstead was given. And to the guy who gave newstead credit for saying "enough is enough": it took him 16 or so years and a LOT of cash in the bank before he had the balls to do so. And he's soooooooo good that he's bounced around on reputation for a couple of years and amounted to absolutely nothing without them(unless you included the whopping success of that stupid tv show).
Megadeth will not match Rust, yet I liked UA. Slayer will not match Blood, yet I liked CI.
you can go on and on, stop waiting for any band to recreate and/or beat their best moments. It's a foolish waste of time.

Ok, listened to this all the way through (streaming on Metallica's site) and I have to say I'm actually impressed. I used to be the biggest hater on Metallica, so that is quite a feat that they impressed me with their new material. So much so, in fact, that I'm actually considering buying this. I admit, before this album, I had given up on them completely. Especially after the Loads (of shit) and S(hi)t. Anger, and also the whole "we're not metal" comments and Kirk Hammett running his mouth about how he thinks bands they grew up with like Priest and Maiden aren't relevant anymore (funny because Metallica just did a Maiden tribute album!). Anyhow, this is a really good album, and I didn't think they had it in them. I still have to say, however, Megadeth's United Abominations still kicks the shit out of this album. Mustaine is clearly the superior songwriter, and the first 3 Metallica albums show that. Almost all those early Metallica riffs? Oh yeah, that's Mustaine's doing. Megadeth (still) > Metallica. However, there is now less of a gap between 'deth & 'tallica since Magnetic's release. Most shocking comeback ever in my opinion. Now only if Sebastian Bach & Skid Row can mend things, I will be more shocked!!!

It just suddenly seems that everyone has turned into a porffesional record producer, a proffesional engineer, a professional musician, etc... As soon as they heard the album. I'd give my left nut (only cause I don't need it anymore) to A: be able to play anything on this album B: be able to make a song half as good as any of them.
Not saying, Metallica is the only band that doesn't suck, or they are the best metal band, or the best guitarists or whatever. If it sucks so bad why does everyone seem to need to give it their personal review. No one gives a shit about the new Dragonforce cd. In fact Blabbermouth USERS (ie: 13 year old dropouts, and well me I guess) rated it at 4.4 that's by the same assholes that gave Metallica 8.4 ?! WTF !
I don't care what anyone says (hard to tell by this tirade right?) it is a solid Metallica record (yes I said record, I'm old).
It is not the same as half of the new metal that's out now, but I don't want to listen to the same type of metal all day, every day. It would make my ears bleed and want to look for a meat grinder to stick my head in, and it would get boring fast.
I wonder who everyone is gonna bash on now that this CD is out now. It's gonna take Metallica 4 years to make another one.

Oh, I'm aware that no "credits" were given on MOP, but I do know that his riffs are there, whether he helped in the songwriting process or not. I usually am nice to everyone. But DON'T CALL ME A FUCKING SHEEP. I own more metal albums by more bands than you probably ever knew existed. I don't just believe bullshit, I actually look into things from all angles before forming an opinion. Mustaine was pretty much fucked out of most of his credit in Metallica. And if you see how the albums changed drastically after MOP, you'll see my point. They were Burton-less & Mustaine-less. Mustaine's songwriting progression in Megadeth pretty much proves how much influence he had on early Metallica's riffs. Again, I'm not saying he wrote every song, I'm just saying he was a huge, huge, huge, HUGE part of their early riff structure, the other part being mostly Diamond Head. I had a friend who said Dave Mustaine had a HUGE part in bringing metal to the American masses... and to this day I still stand by that statement!!!

LOVE Amon Amarth but haven't heard the new album yet.
Still not sold on The Haunted, they just don't stand out enough for me. Nothing special as to why I should listen to them as opposed to, say... Soilwork.
If there's a band that is entirely underappreciated that metal fans need to experience... that band is Alchemist, from Australia. Fans of Opeth & Mastodon would love 'em. They even throw in some Pink Floyd-esque stuff in every now and then for good measure. Amazing shit.

This is the best Metallica Album in 20 years. It has all the elements of their records from the 80's played with a little bit of the swagger from there 90's records. To me this is the album that we have been waiting for since Justice. These songs stick in your head. I can't get this stuff out of my head. I just want to listen to it over and over. Easily one of the best albums of the year. I have been anticipating this record since they started working on it. Then I was let down from what I heard from Mission Metallica web site. Only to wowed by the final results. This album is great.

Why is everyone bitching about the prouction? It's not like the Black Album but it's nowhere near the sonic mess that St. anger was. Plus practically every CD produced over the past couple of years has had horrible production. Because of all the compression that is being used and everyone wants everything in the mix turned up as loud as possible.
I love how everyone talks about the first four albums as being perfect. Have any of you listened to ...And Justice For All lately?
Justice had horrible production. You can't hear the bass, The drums and guitars are turned up waaay to high in the mix to point that you get a buzzing sound in your speakers. The vocals are turned down too low in some songs. The worst production on Justice was Blackened. It's a great song but the production on that sucks.

The one thing that I'll say about St. Anger that the reviewer got right was that it was the album that they needed to make at that time. They stripped themselves completely bare and while it is a terrible album, it is what it is. Lars has said that they had to come out with St. Anger and I agree with him. The album still sucks balls but at least you heard them trying after the double debacle that was Load/Re-Load.
As for Death Magnetic, I give it an 9 out of 10. I'm sure it'll grow on me even more.
I went out and bought it today after a friend of mine burned me a downloaded copy so that I could hear if it was worth buying or not. It most definitely is. I'm sure after what the band has put it's fans through in the past 12 years that there will still be naysayers that won't give Death Magnetic a proper chance. But to those who do, they'll be pleasantly surprised.
Oh yeah, and the production is fine on the album.
And I actually buy CD's instead of just ripping off artists BTW.

Could have been an 8 if the production was half bearable. Now that I know the real copy is as shitty sounding as the MP3's I'll be picking up new Volbeat and Scar Symmetry at the record store today instead.
Favorite songs: All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, Broken Beat Scarred
Least Favorites: Suicide and Redemption, My Apocalypse, Cyanide
Why is it mixed so poorly? I mean really, they're one of the biggest bands in the world....there's no excuse. They could have done a better job recording on a 4-track.

Great music. Bad production. Snare's too loud (and I love Lars' playing), rhythm too low. Just imagine if it had that crushing Hetfield sound of old. I just don't see how all of them sat there listening to the playback and saying "this sounds great!". Nothing personal against Fidelman, but it shouldn't have took them too long to realize he was not the man for the job.

This and Testament are my favorite albums this year. 9.2/10 I love the first few albums for their pure aggression. I think DM is their best mix of melody and aggression though. They went from selling out (which i never really paid attention to until i listened to ajfa and reload back to back) back to something that kicks ass! Thats why i paid a bunch of money for pit tickets to see them in Chicago. cant wait.

Anyway i heard most of this album and it is a worthy effort, but i've never been much of a Metallica fan so this album (along with most of their other stuff) is pretty bland for my tastes. If your a huge Metallica fan i assume you've already bought it.
Still in the area of old thrash bands, i'm going to have to give it to the new Overkill, Testament, and Metal Church albums.

Sorry man, but what you "know" dosent mean shit. And what you belive is wrong. Metallica would never get away with using somebody elses riffs in that way, Mustaine has never claimed he had riffs except those he got creditds for (he was bitching about Lepper Messiah cuz of the "spider chord" playing style).
I like megadeth to so dont start with that, but its obvious that you dont know what you are talking about. AJFA is still in the "old Metallica" style, no Burton or Mustaine there either.
Following your logic; every band that has ever changed their style of music must have gotten their "riffs" from someone who was in the band for instance let say 9 months (which Mustaine was). You are actually saying that since Megadeth music changed with Cryptic writings and Risk, then all the music they made before that must be credited to someone else...... Hello, fucking wake up to reality will you.

They didn't steal someone else's riffs, Mustaine was in Metallica. He just is entirely undercredited is what I'm saying. And I do consider "And Justice" a departure in style from the first 3 albums. The loss of Cliff Burton was also a huge reason for that change in sound. Also, the Mustaine riff style is still there on Cryptic Writings, it was Risk were things went off course, this was remedied with "The World Needs A Hero", however. Cryptic Writings is where the band started let producers & record companies get entirely too involved in the creation of the record, and it was just out of hand with Risk, which barely sounds like a Megadeth album (but I still listen to it from time to time).

En definitiva: ...they will never stop, they will never quit, 'cause they are Metallica

You nailed it, we who have grown up with this band have come to the point of disapointment with each release since the Black Album. With that we have been forced to change what we consider to be great or good and except what they give us.... This is a decent CD, nothing great, and not terrible. I told a friend the other day that you'll probably listen to it 4 - 5 times before it finds some DUST on the SHELF. This band lost its abilty to write 17 years ago.....those of you that sip the Kool Aid for this band, you'll love it, but you know it's not that good, or bad, just sort of..there.
It's great to see that Dave Mustiane has put out some of his best work in the past 5 years, and that Metallica is more concerned with shopping at Gucci then making a CD where you can hear the Bass Guitar, and the Drums are not most important instrument in the mix.
When I leave work I'll listen to it again...for the 5th time, and then I think I'll give it to my son so he can have a listen, but I have a feeeling he'll put in United Abominations quickly, after one listen.

01. That Was Just Your Life - THIS SONG STARTS SLOW AND THEN PICKS UP. THE SNARE DRUM IS OFF TONE AND JAMES'S SINGING SOUNDS STRAINED. 02. The End Of The Line - THIS IS TRYING TOO HARD TO BE OLD METALLICA AND THE BASS AT THE BEGINNING IS OVERDONE. IT SOUNDS LIKE LOAD. 03. Broken, Beat & Scarred - TOO PUNCHY AT THE START AND THE GUITARS BLEED IN THE WRONG WAY. THIS SOUNDS LIKE 2X4 OFF LOAD. 04. The Day That Never Comes - OVERPLAYED SINGLE. 05. All Nightmare Long - THE OPENING BASS IS A RIP OFF OF BEZERKERS FROM BLS. 06. Cyanide - NOT A BAD SONG BUT JAMES SINGS TOO HARD. 07. The Unforgiven III - UGH, ANOTHER ONE OF THESE 08. The Judas Kiss - CAN YOU SAY RIP OFF OF JUDAS RISING? 09. Suicide & Redemption - THE GUITARS ARE TOO CRUNCHY ON THIS AND THE HIGH HAT IS OVERUSED. SOUNDS LIKE THE OUTLAW TORN 10. My Apocalypse - THE "BLACKENED" OF THE ALBUM, VERY FAST BUT SOUNDS LIKE LARS DID A FEW LINES BEFORE TRACKING THIS. DRUMS ARE TOO FAST

Production/mix is good. Buy the CD and play it on a home stereo system. Best album since the first 4, I'm enjoying it a little bit more than the Black album. Favorite track would be All Nightmare Long. Only song lacking is Unforgiven III. I never cared for the Load-St. Anger era and the album marks a return of the Metallica the created Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and Justice For All. I'd give it a 9.

Best Metallica album since The Black album. The production is good. I think it is a combination of old metallica with the black album and load/reload era, but more old style. The only song i dont like is the unforgiven III but its ok cause its hard to find an album out there that is great in every song.
i gave it a 10 because its a great attempt for a band that got lost in the mainstream and that are wanting to come back to the metal scene. Metallica has never put out bad records, they just changed their style.

Unfortunately I didn't grow up listening to Metallica. I only first got into them when S&M came out, and I work my way backwards from there. And I'll say right now that I love Load and Reload, but then again that might be because I wasn't exposed to Ride, Puppets, and Justice for several years for a decade before these came out. With this album, I'm seeing it for what it is, not what it isn't. For me, it's 10 well-crafted songs that are heavy as shit. The riffs are killer for the most part, and the solos are face-melting. I'm giving this a 9, because I think it's just that good. As has been said about the production, I'd like to hear Rob's bass and perhaps make the sound just tighter in general, but that's the only place it's losing marks with me.

Welp, 15 minutes after the stores opened I had this bitch physically in my hands... I'm a big Metallica fan.. Own every release, like most of it... don't like some, better average than MOST bands over a career.
So.. the CD..
First impession of the physical packaging.... I dislike it. I don't care for the holes in the pages. I just don't. Also kinda dislike the lyrics aren't in the order that the songs are on the CD.
Onto the music....
1) That Was Just Your Life: LOVE it. When the heartbeat and music start, I thought I was listening to an Anthrax album for a minute. Good song, like the riffs, tempo, feel, etc.. Definitely a favorite.
2) The End Of The Line: Another series of cool opening riffs... Once the lyrics start it feels kinda Creeping Death for me in the delivery, which isn't a bad thing. Easy to listen to, love the music backing the "heed/need more and more" parts..
3) Broken, Beat & Scarred: Fucking LOVE this song.. especially the "what don't kill ya make ya more strong" part.. this song will be fighting for my favorite position over and over again through the years.
4) The Day That Never Comes: I'll admit, when I very first heard the first few notes of this song, I threw up in my mouth a little bit. I think it was back when Blabbermouth linked the clip(s) or video.. don't remember which.. Hated it. I first thought, "aww fuck, here comes James with his lovely, tender, precious harmony singing crap that I dislike most of the time" - but.. thankfully when the doubled power chords hit and of course the jamming parts, it made up for the very beginning. Whew!
5) All Nightmare Long: Opening is a touch throwback to Sandman but the rest is quite lively. Chorus is catchy and hooky as hell... which for me at least is a little out of place for a Metallica song.. I'm more used to having it grow on me. Another song that'll probably be in the top 2-4 positions for me.
6) Cyanide: I didn't care for this when I first heard it live on the net. Thought it was a little corny to be honest. I like it quite a bit better on the CD.
7) The Unforgiven III: Hate it. Hate the concept of it, hate the opening, execution, title and I hate that it's over 7 minutes long. Sorry.. That's my personal opinion and I'm entitled to it. I will likely never like this song, and that's, okay... If I want to hear power ballads, I listen to Aerosmith or something. I heard James compare this to "One" in an interview. Shit. This song isn't fit to wipe the ass of "One". Again, my opinion.
8) The Judas Kiss: Wow. Opening riff and drum roll I thought was listening to a Maiden song for a second.. then it opens up and delivers even more... Though I don't love the "bow down, sell your soul to me" and think it's a little high school lyric feeling.. overall it's a damn good song, I'll be enjoying it for years.
9) Suicide & Redemption: LOVE IT! Fucking love it. Yeah, seriously.. I love it! Just like old school Metallica, it inspired me to run over, strap on the old guitar, dust off and fire up the old amp and play along.. I love it when something inspires me to step back into my past like that.
10) My Apocalypse: Nice! I enjoyed this song right out of the box, won't require any getting used to time. Though it's a touch imitation Slayer in the lyrical content and delivery, that's fine.. I love Slayer.. Good pace, riffs, etc.
Overall.. Better than St. Anger. Though I have issue with the sound quality/mixing... A few points:
The guitars) Not enough distortion, too much overdriven sound. Too thin and tinny. Metallica guitars should be mixed HEAVY.. plenty of CHUNK CHUNK CHUNK sound with a full spectrum of high, middle and bottom that makes even the best stereo and speakers work.
The bass) Fuck guys.. You've got Robert Trujillo in the band, couldn't you give him a touch more lift in the final mix? No disrespect to Cliff or Jason (I love their stuff) but Robert has more soul pouring out of his fingers into those strings - I'd love for my system to get more of it without having to EQ it in.
The drums) Well.. at least the snare is better than St. Anger - but DAMN Lars, buy a snare that's not so deep in physical dimension.. shoot for a snare with some more SNAP in it. Smack, like a gunshot, not the sound that's like a tom glued to a snare.
Overall sound: Considering the year is 2008, technology is booming and Metallica has the time and money to make an album that has sound that is second to none - I think the overall sound of this CD is fine for another band just coming up or something - but not the sound THIS CD and THIS band needs.
My opinion is the people responsible for the sound on this Metallica release should never work in this genre of music again. Metallica dabbled in shitty sound for one CD, this one should have been a return to form and THEN some and it's not. My car and home system have been DROOLING in anticipation to crank this CD and neither got the workout I was hoping to give them.
With all things considered - everything changes and Death Magnetic was well worth the money I spent and I like more about it than I don't - so in my life, Metallica has delivered on par with their average.
Thanks for so many years of such good music and live performances guys.
\m/ This is Dee and I approve this message \m/

And people who says is abad album, and metallica died with dave mustaine... well, dude, If you want thrash, go with Kreator, Exodus, Evile... Metallica is band that evolves, and if you'll still cry for your loving band who you take for dead... well, stop being a pussy.. GROW UP!

Really good album, beyond my expectations. All winners except for cyanide, which is a bit messy, and not in the good acception of the term. The mix is bad, i have to agree(but my favourite metallica is and justoce for all, so i can't be that picky), too much drums, too little voice and bass. The production is ok, everything sounds good, i like this raw vocals just as much as i liked the "multilayered bob rock style" ones, still i wonder what would it have sounded like with a real producer, but i have the same feeling about all of their 80's records too.
what i don't get is how comes that most of the guys complaining about the production are the same guys claiming that metallica are dead since 198whatever, when their records (records that i love, records that are some of the finest moment of metal if not of rock in general) were awesome DESPITE the production and the mix, which has always been really bad (the much hated bob rock is the only one who gave them a great sound, whatever you think of their 90s records, they sounded fucking great).
It wasn't bad cause the technology was bad, at that time other thrash bands had great productions and mixes. Slayer had great sounding album at that time, but this thanks to andy wallace, not rick rubin for sure (the guy is a really good "semi free lance" A&R, he's possibly the one and only real A&R guy left on the face of this planet, but he is not a producer, at least not a traditional one). Megadeth sounded good too(except for killing is my business), thanx to randy burns and later mike clink. Iron Maiden sounded great, but they had this guy named Martin Birch... never heard of him?
Metallica had...fleming rasmussen! I'm sure he is a great guy, but he's not a hell of a producer...for example, do you remeber the sound of the guitars on the beginning of fight fire with fire? would you call that a great sound?apart from metallica, do you like the sound on covenant, by morbid angel? have you ever heard immaginations from the other side, by blind guardian? i like those two, but they don't sound great for sure, productionwise.
my point is that metallica started to have good production and mixes when everybody(in the "metal community") started to hate them, so what do you want? did you ever liked them in the first place? have you forgot how they sounded, in the old days?

You really have recently listened to Risk? Wow. I even bought the re-issue/mastered whatever copy of it hoping there was something redeemable. That was easily the worst record of either of these two bands.
I've heard his "spider" thingy complaint before. So I ask this? Isn't every musician influenced by what they have heard and whoever has been around them? Dave got the proper writing credits and I would suspect has been paid the proper percentages. He has no one to blame but himself for being booted out. And I am a megadeth fan, have all their music, including the re-issues, so I'm not a dave hater, just not a dave apologist.
One thing I would like to state that has always bugged me. James and Lars always get the blame for fucking over Dave, yet no-one mentions that Cliff was in on that too. Since Lars and James valued cliff so much, I doubt they would have made that decision without his approval too. Thus all three agreed he had to go, which seems to point that it was the right thing to do.
Was justice a departure from MOP, yes. Just as Ride was a departure from Kill em all. The only two that were very similar is Ride to Puppets. So I don't buy any argument about running out of Dave's riffs.
And to all you other haters, go ahead, listen to Amon Amarth. They fucking suck. Boring, stupid music. And listen to the Haunted. I don't think they suck, but I don't get much out of em either.

The album's basically hard rock riffs mixed with a few thrash ones: It's quite different and not bad at all. I would have loved if there were more songs a la "My Apocalypse" (my favourite one) because as my name clearly states I love thrash and that song is pure thrash from start to finish, it reminds me of Damage Inc. But I'm realistic: We're talking about four aging, way-too-rich rockstars, totally out of touch with what's going on in the underground, so all in all it's a good effort. I gave it a 7.

I got a hold of a promo of this and checked it out. It is not that Classic/ World-Class circa 2008, way over-rated by the Metallica fanatics; as always, and it is not as inferior/ generic as the detractors would also like you to believe.
Basically if your collection is very small, under 3 thousand units, check this out first, but if your collection is pretty huge like mine, where the music library looks like the Red Stream Distrobution warehouse, this was a somewhat of a pretty instant purchase once I got to hear it, after a couple of spins.
Not my favorite CD I own, not a top ten of mine for 2008, and not a top 100 CD for 2008 for me, but the band did put some effort into the creativity to the songwriting, so this is worth the money, on your this week's CD buying binge.
For me my "8"'s are albums like Iron Maiden " Piece of Mind" and Judas Priest " Screaming for Vengence". 9's are Deicide albums and 10's are the innovative gothic/ black/ industrial/ heavy/ thrash avant garde bands that are always never in short supply in Norway. Luckily taste are different and it is okay if people agree to disagree, and do not get along, after all music is a pretty subjective thing, and music apprecitaion varies person to person, and for now, I think this is a 8 meaning " a above average release, better than what is on offer from my local metal scene".
I disagree with the above comment, that I would of gave this a 9.8 if this was any other band, no way, I know what a 10 is a what a 9 is and a this 8 like most albums are in my collection, no matter who moniker was on this CD.
Overseas MetallicA collectors. The US pressing of "Death Magnetic" is barcode: 0 9362- 49861- 8 8 Catalogue Number on CD spine is Warner Bros 508732- 2
The barcode not matching the catalogue number and the barcode not having the number 2 in it (denoting CD release) has been like that for Warner Bros Records for a couple of years now.

So now that MTV and radio have stopped paying attention, Metallica comes crawling back to the Metal fans, cup in hand, hey remember us? After spending the '90s doing as much as they could to distance themselves from Metal now they are all "we love Ozzfest" and taking Machine Head on the road. Give me a break. This is the most calculating band of all time!
There is not one iota of the danger or chaos that defined the first three albums present on Death Magnetic. Having said that, I have found myself enjoying some of the songs. SOME. Many of them are just riffs slapped together, just like St. Anger. Tempos are, for the most part, slow and mid. There are a few times where they're off to the races, but not often for my tastes when it comes to this band. I guess all of the fans under 30 will love this because they grew up with the worst era of the band (Black/Load/Reload/S&M), and this is much better than those albums. The solos are entertaining and even inspired on occassion. The production is OK, better than the moron thud-rock of Load and Re-Load.
For a band that has been putting out albums for 25 years, this is a decent release. This should have been the follow-up to the Black album, but that would have meant not cutting their hair and wearing fir coats and pimp suits and playing shows with Veruca Salt. For better or worse, Metallica is what they are, a mainstream "Metal" band. I think I'll stick with the new Testament and Judas Priest albums, though.
In closing, yeah Metallica still sucks. Just not as much. 7/10

I'm a long time Metallica fan, first 5 are ace, i really enjoyed load and st anger for what they were, (reload has 2 / 3 good songs on)
the chorus to 'All nightmare long' is ace
the heavy verse riff in 'Judas kiss' is ace
'Broken beas and scared' is a great song... until it's spoilt by a really shit riff at 3:50, and a crap solo over said shit riff.
BUT I'm struggling to find anything else good on the album.
I have listened to the album 10+ times, and i really don't like it. I don't like the name, or the cover, and the production is appauling.
there are very few vocal hooks or memorable chorus'
Kirks solo's are really average and irritating, he shouldn't have bothered.
'That was just your life' is the worst collection of riffs Metallica have ever recorded.
The riff in the first song is a Machine head ripp off from a song on 'The blackening', there are one or two other riffs which are half inched from the blackening.
vocals on 'My appocalyse' and other songs sound like a crap impression of Slayer
The instrumental... well they play the same riff for 4 minutes, rubbish. Second half of song slightly better.
The whole album is a bad parody of their former greatness.
I'm glad i didn't buy the the album.
So while everyone else is listening to this poop, i'm gonna put and justice on and remember the good times :)
A disappointed Metallica fan.

How can a fan of Metallica not really dig this album???
It isn't fair to compare every release to MOP. Your going to be quite disappointed in life if you try comparing everything to the best no matter what walk of like you live. People need to move on. Bands don't just write the best albums over and over and over. No body does yet some of you write on here like they do. Some say stupid shit like.........Not buying it because it isn't as good as MOP. If that was the case then you must have about 20 CD's in your whole collection.
I give this album a 10. I'm not the biggest fan in the world of Metallica but what they did on this album is great when you consider where they came from over the last 15 years. If you never heard of Metallica and listen to this I think you'd be quite stoked about this band. They really bring it on this album. I found it very refreshing to listen to compared to alot of shit released in the last few years.

It's definitely a good album. Not their best, but solid for sure. I really dislike "The End of The Line" and I'm not to fond of "The Judas Kiss". "Cyanide" is kind of growing on me. The rest of the album is great! After about 10 or so listens, the album really starts to shine.
This album has stuff in it from their entire career. If you have an open mind and like it for what it is, you will find a bunch of gems on this one. I love how they can add piano, strings and horns to the beginning of U3 and then end the album with an all out thrash song.
this album is very dynamic and almost threw me off at first with all of the start stop riffs, but once you get used to it, you start to appreciate it more.
And last, a lot of people will probably disagree with me, but I think this album sounds like no other and is a nice chnage from the monotonous, same sounding metal genre that is popular right now. Everybody sounds the same and this album stands on its own from the "current" metal sound.
I've heard many people on Blabbermouth say that the new Exodus and Testament blow this away. Sure, if you want to be bored to tears. IMHO, Death Magnetic is 100x more dynamic sounding than Exodus and Testament (yes I own both). Everybody makes music that sounds like Exodus and Testament IMHO. It all sounds the same from LOG to The Black Dahlia Murder to Slayer. Sure, I like a lot of those bands too, but it's nice to get some change up as well.

Warner Bros. CD's for a time the Barcode did not match the Catalogue number on the CD spine, then for a couple of decades Warner Bros. Barcodes and Catalogue Numbers, matched exactly. So now Warner Bros. is back to a Barcode/ Catalogue Number scheme were the 12 digit barcode, 0 9362-49861-8 8 for Death Magnetic, does not match the Catalogue Number for Death Magnetic Warner Bros 508732-2.
I know people some people are insane MetallicA fanatics (myself 1982-1993..especially), and thought they would appreciate that info, so when they got the CD as a import for USA to Europe, they would know what to expect.

And I am glad I did. St. Anger might have been an OK album if the sound quality was not so bad. The remixed version of Some Kinda Monster (on the single) Was not bad because they fixed a lot of the sound issues. I just cannot buy these over loud albums. They sound like crap and are hard to listen to. I thought surely this would be over by now, but it has been getting worse for the last 10 or more years. I refuse to buy this crap. I don't understand how musicians and engineers who have great ears can think it sounds good. Radio is dead, so why does "Loud" even matter any more?

Finally after a third complete listen I think I've come up with a pretty clear idea of the album. Definitely their best work since the Black album, but different from what they've done to the date. It was obvious they weren't going to release another album on the lines of their 80's work, so I'm not dissapointed at all. Overall I think it's a really solid work, and lives up to the expectations. The only major flaws I can find are the almost invisible bass (turn it up, poor Rob!!) and the solos (clearly not Kirk's best work, some of them are pretty sloppy).

--------------------------------------------------------------------
you are totally right man, even though i am a huge fan of metallica and everything .. load/reload and st anger in alot of peoples eyes blew but you have to understand a couple of things. For one they were trying to go in a different musical direction for load and reload and if you are just a metal fan and do not appriciate hard rock or blues or anything else then thats fine, st anger was a different story it was a shit album but i appriciate and like for where they're mindset was. This album is very good compared to their last 3 .. maybe not on the same level as ajfa and below but its their best stuff since black and if you like metallica or used to then you should like this. Fact of the matter i just signed up to post stuff because i get on and read what all you metallica haters write and it pisses me off because they arent master of puppets anymore so get that out of your head that was over 20 years ago so get over it .. accept it or stop bitching .. most of you that post anyways are like 13 so get a life and stop busting on the greatest metal band of all time. At least they are still making good music

5 bucks?! a brand new cd?! I'll tell you, in my country (italy) new cd's are over 20 euros, which, at today's exchange rate, makes about 30$! I myself have never seen a metallica cd in a shop at less than 15 euros (about 21$), which is what I paid my copies of rtl, mop and ajfa

it's a pretty good album but not perfect so it's 8 but the bad production make it 7/10 , i'd say RTL and MOP desirve a 10/10 ,AJFA and kill em all 9/10, and black album 8/10, and this is 7/10,load 5/10,reload 4/10,ST. Anger 2/10
still testament is the best metal album IMO

I grew up listening to Metallica, they were never my favorite but they along with Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus etc. introduced me to thrash and the subsequent genres of Death and Black metal, which remain my favorite forms of metal .
The last Metallica CD to make my collection was 'and Justice...'. I did not like the 'Black Album' or any of the following releases including 'St Anger'. I doubt I will pick this up, but I have heard it twice and it is definitely a return to the roots with an eye forward. It has the signature Rick Rubin production. It definitely sounds like they are having fun again. I look forward to seeing them live again, they have always been a good live band.

"9's are Deicide albums and 10's are the innovative gothic/ black/ industrial/ heavy/ thrash avant garde bands"
*************************************************** Let me start by saying yours, and anyone else's, opinions are fully valid. However:
I find it hard to beleive that there have been at least 99 releases in 2008 better than DM.
Based on your rating description, I can see where you are coming from. I think Deicide are pretty much crap. You hear one or two songs, you've heard em all.
I would think people with your slant on music would just view metallica as pop crap and not be bothered whatsoever.

This is by far Metallica's best effort since AJFA and as far as I'm concerned, THIS is the ablum that should have been released after AJFA. It is not a complete return to form but rather a mixture of the best parts of their older and newer material with a modern feel to it. There are tons of riffs and Kirk finally gets back to his shredding ways. An absolutely fantastic metal cd from start to finish.

Well, say what you will about Don Kaye's reviews, but he's right when he talks about the possibility of Sneap or Richardson helming the production on a Metallica CD. The results could be vastly better than what can be heard on the CD. Even the official Metallica boards want the next CD to be handled by Sneap.

Production wise, it sounds fine when play loud on a good system. Maybe the MP3s sounds like crap... the CD itself sounds good. Production reminds me of AJFA.

I am not trying to be rude or mean-spirited here. But when you listen to authentic heavy metal. I have to admit I am a big Independant Music Record Collector, because of the CORPORATE ROCK STILL SUCKS attitude.
Metallica is just a case , where I can always find "better" music and "better' metal, with deeper meaning. Every CD in my collection is usually better than what Metallica alway has on offer and every CD I will buy this year will easily be "better" and more "musical" and more "metal". If that is what I have experienced since 1982-2008; why would I not just state the facts of what I have experienced subjectively
The Metal genre is always a work in progress and trust me, the future of Metal is never found in asethetics of Pop Music, so yeah I did view Metallica as pop rock crap, when they were shoveling that shit when they were de-evolving from a complex metal band to a rather bland un-inspired alternative rock act.
Luckily taste are different and music is totally subjective, and I never said everyone has to agree, but I will always state the facts as I experience them, and that is just a fact for me, this is a good "above average" album. I for sure have found already a few hundred and maybe a thousand "better" albums" than this by mid - 2008.
I am only talking from my experience where I add ususally add a few dozen CD's to my collection every week. Myself If I only add less than 9 CD's to my collection, in any given week, I consider that a lack-luster week. Last week I add 20 CD's to my collection. And yeah everyone was at least more enjoyable to superior enjoyment over " Death Magnetic".
But luckily taste are different, and I have always been on the opposite of the mainstream, to the point that this would not even make this years top 100 for me. I can find thousands of CD better than this in my collection with a blind fold !!

Plus the official release title of the album was supposed to be as follows:
Lars' Snare (Feat. Metallica) - Deaf Magnetic

Haters can say what they want to say, but I would say the best metal abum of 2008 is Testament's The Formation Of Damnation! Death Magnetic is awesome for a great comeback from Metallica, but from my personal opinion it doesn't beat out Testament's latest release!
Anyways with that being said, I can't wait to see them at Oakland on December 20th!

After Coma of Souls was released in 1990, Kreator released a lot of shitty music.
Then, 2001 came along and they released Violent Revolution, followed by Enemy of God.
Both of those albums restored Kreator's place as the kings of German Thrash.
After all the hype for this album, I was expecting something that would make me forget the Black album, forget load and reload and forget St. Anger.
That didn't happen. This album is decent. Nothing more, nothing less. It's a perfunctory attempt by a band that no longer has anything to say.
If you had to narrow down everything that is wrong with Metallica, a picture is worth a thousand words:

You're an idiot. Other than titling a track "The Unforgiven 3". this album succeeds on every front.
With their forthcoming release, Death Magnetic, Metallica returns with an unfathomable ferocity it hasn’t matched since 1988’s commercial breakthrough ...And Justice For All. The album examines death and all that it encompasses. Some people are drawn to it, almost fascinated while others refuse to talk about it. But in the end, it catches up to all of us. Similar to what Producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin has done for so many artists of so many genres in the past, the band’s latest effort, scheduled to hit stores September 12th, is no exception. The opening track, “That Was Just Your Life”, begins with a subtle heartbeat (the collective heartbeat of the metal world just hoping that this album isn’t another St. Anger). It doesn’t take long to realize that you’re about to get your ass kicked by a record for the first time in a very long time. You barely have time to catch your breath as “The End of the Line” begins. You may ask yourself why this sounds so familiar. Probably because the passion and intensity that was buried away for all their commercial appeal is back and hopefully here to stay. The album continues it’s relentless assault with “Broken, Beat & Scared”. Lyrically, it’s not the strongest song on the album (You Rise, You Fall, You’re Down and You Rise Again). But the message is clear. This business has not only taken its toll on Metallica, but on other bands and musicians who are no longer with us. Originally, front man James Hetfield wrote this as a tribute to people like former Alice N Chains’ member Layne Staley who died of a an overdose in 2002. Other notable tracks include “All Nightmare Long”, a song so relentless it should include a warning sticker on it saying not to stand within 10 feet of someone you hate because it’ll evoke physical violence. “Cyanide” delves deepest into this concept album, highlighting bassist Robert Trujillo, who had never recorded new material with the band before Magnetic. The respect the rest of the band has for Trujillo is evident. You realize former bassist Jason Newsted was merely filling in for Trujillo after the tragic death of original bassist Cliff Burton. On “The Judas Kiss”, a song about the eventual fall of the human spirit overcome with temptation, Hetfield demands, “Bow down/sell your soul to me/I will set you free/Pacify your demons.” This album would not be complete with out “Suicide & Redemption”, a ten minute instrumental track which almost pays homage to past greats like “The Call of Ktulu” (Ride The Lighting) “Orion” (Masters of Puppets), “To Live Is To Die” (And Justice for All). But to pay homage almost means that it’s not as grand as its predecessors, which is a far cry from the truth. The album ends with “My Apocalypse”, a relentless 5 minute attack that’ll remind you just how great Metallica was and still is today after 27 years of scaring parents worldwide. Death Magnetic makes one realize how much of a struggle St. Anger was. Not because of the trials and tribulations the band faced at the time as documented in the film “Some Kind of Monster”, but because of their producer, Bob Rock. Rock might have saved Metallica and for that he should be commended. But in a way, Metallica can be compared to a great NBA team. It needs a great coach and sometimes new direction. Bob Rock was once a great producer. But sadly, he either needs to be put out to pasture or find the bar Mike Clink (Guns N Roses) and other former greats hang out. It’s not a knock on Rock, but very few producers have the talents and abilities to stand the test of time. Rubin is one of those producers and with Death Magnetic; he has done the one thing that was needed most. To bring Metallica back from the dead.

A solid 9.....I'd give it a 10, but you can't give it a 10 when you look at what they've done in the past. Sure, this is about as good as it'll ever get again for Metallica. And honestly, I'm absolutely pleased with this album.
As said before, for those who want AJFA, MOP, or RTL all over again.....Grow up. That was 20 to 25 years ago (depending on which album you're hoping they make all over again). It's not like you're still sitting around waiting on Slayer to do another "Reign In Blood" or "Seasons In The Abyss"...You're not waiting for Anthrax to do another "Persistance Of Time" or "State Of Euphoria"...etc, etc. Those days are gone. 80s thrash metal is dead. There's no going back to those days.
I don't get the complaining about the production or the mix. Yeah, the bass is a little in the background...but this is not a bad sounding album.
Is it perfection? Nope. I could still do without Unforgiven 3...but the rest of the album is VERY solid.
Favorites: Broken, Beat, and Scarred. The Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long

Does anybody else think they'll put out the other four songs as B-Sides to the singles for this album?
When they were in the studio, they had 14 tracks and had to cut it down to 10 due to the length of the songs.
If one of the 4 songs on the cutting room floor is Vulturous, then they can leave that unreleased.

Trying SOOOO hard to go against the 'grain' and not like what is popular. Even if this album was so good that it somehow caused world peace, the haters wouldn't like it because everyone else likes it. The reality is that people saying this is shit or a '0/10' are simply trying to put forth a non-conformity image, when all they are actually doing is coming across as complete nerds.
You don't to agree that this is the best album of all time, but it is a SOLID return to form for a band that WE ALL have liked at one point or another.

God damn it's such a shame about the production on this record because it's fucking good. All I hear is the snare, and he's right, it takes away from the aggression. And Lars is downright terrible. So many other things could have been done on his part to up the quality of the songs as well. He just plain and simple did not show up, period. I will write their website and demand a remaster.

BOW DOWN haters. The majority are loving this album.
Death Magnetic proves it doesnt need cookie monster vocals to be an excellent metal album these days.
Opeth's 'Watershed' got a 9.5 compared to this masterpiece? What a joke. Don Kaye is obviously sitting on the fence after getting flamed last time.. pathetic.

And by the way, I've said ALL ALONG they should have had Colin Richardson or Andy Sneap to master this thing. It really would be spectacular if it was remixed. You can't deny that.

At first, I was kind of let down as the songs began pouring out. I first heard Cyanide live on a video, and was pretty dissapointed. Leave it to Metallica to play possibly the worst song on album live before any of the other tracks. Then The Day That Never Comes, which I also found somewhat disappointing. And then My Apocolypse which stuck with me at first but after the rest of them have been released, not so much. I think they made a huge mistake in their production choice and should've gone with a more smooth "perfect" kind of vibe like with the first 5 albums. It suits their music more. I was also pretty disappointed with Kirk's performance on the record, contrary to what other people seem to be saying. His solos on That Was Just Your Life and the Unforgiven III were pretty... not good. Although on other songs they are pretty damn good. I gave the album a 7/10, and I really do like it, but there are many weak points within it.

I think there's a very good album in here, but thanks to some sloppy production mistakes and a song writing issues it's reduced to simply being good. There's some great riffs on it, but a lot of unnecessary ones too that are there just for the sake of making the songs long it seems. If they'd refined the songs more, this would be one of best albums of the year. As it stands it's just a good record. It's not as great as the fanboy's make out, nor is it the crapest thing ever released. It's about as good as what a lot of older bands are putting out. I think their next one will be much better, the one everyone's been waiting for. This is just like a theatrical trailer so to speak.

This album, I think is great.
I liked Load, I like Reload somewhat, I even Likeed a few off St. Anger, but I have been waiting for this for a long time.
All Nightmare Long and The Judas Kiss, kick some ass, and Suicide and Redemption gave me chills when I heard those twin leads pouring out my speakers.
All in All this is a stellar CD, worth the wait. If you don't like it fine, but I can tell you today is a day I have been waiting for, and thats a day to listen to some kick ass new Metallica songs.
I give it a 9.5, because only Master Of Puppets deserves a 10 in my book, but this is a damn, damn good set of songs.

I like it so much when Metallica fanboys wet themselves over this. Not a damn good song on this album, its either too long or way too unstructured. Vocals are nothing but lame and production is plain horrible. Anyone who played the album on a decent stereo system instantly gets a massive headache. No space between the instruments, no dynamics, everything is compressed to death and makes it really painful to listen. Plus the way that Metallica expose themselves in the media is just disgusting. Promotion campaign for DM makes the latest Mariah Carey look like an indie release. Fuck Metallica.

Too bad the sound is so shitty.. even amazon.com reviewers pushed it down a star (I'm sure it would've been five on there) because of this fact. People get a fucking clue. Stop rationalizing your fanboyisms (and the fact that it indeed is GOOD material) and reconciling that with the fact that the mixing and mastering INDEED sucks ass!

I see he changed his rating on the album, still trying to regain credibility for the St. Anger review. Again, the only thing that stops this album from being excellent or a 10, is the 'meh' production and distortion. I still commend Rick Rubin for shaping Metallica to get back to doing what they do best however, since I know Rick doesn't have anything to do with technical stuff. Blame Greg Fidelman for the mix and distortion.

It's OK but other bands seem to put out incredible "new" sounding recordings such as Testament, Death Angel, Motorhead and Priest. I wish Metallica could find it....

"Death Magnetic" is their best album since ...And Justice For All (all though the latter needs to be remasterd with respectable bass). I just think they may be trying just a bit too hard at times on this one. Nonetheless still good. What I think is wrong with the last few albums including this one is they all sound very dry, uninspired and processed. Back in the 80's everything was wet sounding...lot's of reverb and delay. And every riff and arrangement was epic and thunderous. Hetfield had a great thrash voice that made you psyched when you heard it. Now it's almost annoying and irritating. As a fan since Ride the Lightning (yes I'm in my 30's) all I can say it could have been worse. It's not "Ride The Lightning" then again nothing is but after 15 years I may consider buying a Metallica album.

The point I was trying to make that you did not comprehend was, "Kill 'Em All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets", and "...And Justice For All" are the albums I think kick ass. I do not think the "Black Album", "Load", "Re-Load" or "St. Anger" (although I do actually kinda like it) kicked ass. I feel "Death Magnetic" sounds more like a 4th Metallica album (just after "...And Justice For All" now, Destra...try to keep up) than the "Black" Album. They seemed to be a totally different band after the "Black" album. I dig this album a lot.

I'm pretty pleased with it. The reviewer is right about the production though.. The rifts are basically as heavy as anything from justice.. and oftentimes as tight, but the production mud's them out and they don't have that fucking intense impact like you just got bloody kicked in the stomach.
I liked St-Anger... the sound for that worked, and the vocals on st anger were definitely better.. hetfield sounded like he was on the brink of hysterics.. hate on Bob Rock all you want but he got that out of him.
Anyways I gave it a 10, At this point in their careers.. after everything, this album deserves at least that.

I am not going to rehash what everyone else has been saying about the loudness and clipping of this album. I don't think there is a tool out there that will eliminate the clipping/distortion all together but mp3gain does a decent job making things quieter for you iPod users. It is a free program. When I first ran it, all songs ranged between 103 and 107 dbs. Just to give you an idea, 90 db is considered a bit on the loud side with recordings. Now I am no recording buff but this program will make it a bit more listenable on the iPod. No matter what, you will hear some distortion/clipping due to the way it was compressed on the final mix.
Now on to the CD itself, I have only hard it once all the way through and I think it will be a grower. Definitely their best since AJFA. I don't know why people are saying they do not hear any bass on this album. I hear it loud and clear.

9 out of 10 on first listen.
Best song on the record is All Nightmare Long. Cyanide sounds good on the record. The concept of an Unforgiven 3 is stupid.
The record as a whole is great for what it is. If you aren't expecting something that is exactly like the first four albums, then buy it. Otherwise, don't.
By the way, with the caliber of this record, I really hope that what that one person said in an earlier news post about this album doing to Metallica what Through the Ashes of Empires did to Machine Head happens.

This is classic metal in the NWOBHM mold. That's why it's so magical. No matter your opinion, no other album will influence more 14,15 and 16 year olds to pick up a guitar and rock than THIS for years to come. The last record to do this: AJFA. Not bad for a bunch of "has beens".

THis was a reasonable review, and to the normal people in the middle who don't give a shit about selling out and shitty records, yeah, it's worth the 9.99 + tax that I spent on it. Listen to the whole thing, the first few songs are a bit lame, but it gets way better. Better written than SA and produced better (and am I the only one who thinks the production on the garage Inc. sounds like the best production they've ever done ...sorry), some parts are boring, most are pretty cool, Lars' playing predictable and loud, but not sloppy, and no tin can tamberine jamican snare crap, just good old "SNAP" like the justice days. booklet is unique but the artwork obscures some of the lyrics.
Guitar/bass . First of all there is more bass than justice, but that isn't saying much. It's funny on the intrumental that they are forced to bring up the bass (which by the way, does jam!) and it sounds TOO compressed. Robert rocks, but is understated, mostly to make room for the snare, high hat signals in the mix. That being said, this is Kirk's most chalenging work in 15 years, and they focus on the good, and he uses minimal wah effects on the soloing, which is a huge relief for me. James sounds like james with some sanity added back to the rhythm guitar mix.
the songs themselves are good, but some are hit and miss. I'll let the two of you who read this decide which songs are which.

I like to start things off by giving a shout out to the true retards of the thread: J.Jay, Mettalmann Nailed, Reaper MetalPoser, La Parka Owns You.
Now, on to Don Kaye. Just the fact that you gave St. Anger and Death Magnetic the same rating erases any credibility that your review may have had.
Now, on to the correct answers:
"That Was Just Your Life" - 8/10 "The End Of The Line" - 9/10 "Broken, Beat & Scarred" - 9.5/10 "The Day That Never Comes" - 7.5/10 "All Nightmare Long" - 9/10 "Cyanide" - 7.5/10 "The Unforgiven III" - 8/10 "The Judas Kiss" - 10/10 "Suicide & Redemption" - 10/10 "My Apocolypse" - 7/10
Overall - 9/10

Ok let me just get this out of the way, everything that came out after the Black Album is garbage--Load and Reload could have been paired down to 1 album and james himself said the songs weren't that great. those were Metallica trying to be Skynyrd. St. Anger well that wasn/t a return to anything but the garbage. having said DEATH MAGNETIC is a return of BALLS.
The guys are a legitimate THRASH BAND again, Bob Rock should have been fired after the Black Album, not allowed to drag a great band into the doldrums of hell. now on with the review.....
That Was Just Your Life and Cyanide work within the context of the ablum and IMO are great songs. to all Slayer fans think of these 2 songs like Cult, doesn't really sound right as a single but heard within the context of the album sounds killer.
Suicide and Redemption is their first instramental since To Live Is To Die from Justice, that should tell all the haters something right there. Broken, Beat and Scarred along with All Nightmare Long sound like Slayer stepped inside the guys and started ripping.
the album sound like it could have came between Justice and the Black Album....to all those who still want them to do this or that, they are thrashing again and all hail Rick Rubin for telling the guys to use their 1st 4 albums as a blue print.
i give this album 10 out of 10, it's worth the price of admission!!!!

I've been finished with this band Since Justice for All came out. That album lags in so many ways. I sympathize for them cause it really sounds to me like they couldn't bear to continue without Cliff there in the studio and they were just delivering an album to fulfill their contract. Everything since Justice has also been equally uninspired crap. But hearing this one I think they borrowed from their old ideas heavily, but still progressed with "some" new ones. The Day - is far too One-ish for me. And Cyanide has too many traces of sandman although it is at least a better version of that song. Kirk pretty much plays the same solo on most every song on this album though. And that makes the album a little uneven, given the quality of some of the riffs here. Likewise James really needs to come to grips with the fact that he's a better vocalist when he doesn't try so much.
I say for Old Washed up Rock Stars they did a pretty good job this time around. The Rawness doesn't bother me too much although the guitars could've used a bit more punch overall, and Robert really should've been heard better then he was. Still I'd give this a respectable 6. In the past they couldn't even make it to 0. So this is really saying something.

Metallica hasn't made a great album since Cliff died. The production of Justice is terrible. No bass, the drums overloading the mix. Plus, the songs are just too bloated. The Black album is commercial radio rock, as is Load and Reload. This new record has too much influence from Bob Rock still apparent. I hear grooves instead of riffs. And Lars - do you remember how to attack the drum kit?
I understand why people are excited. After the complete piss of the last three records, DM seems like a godsend. But let's be honest. This band is capable of much more.
Why not head to Denmark and Sweet Silence Studios (Where Ride and Puppets were recorded) with Fleming Rasmussen and bring back Metallica?
I first got into them in 1984 with Ride the Lightning and was at the record store on release day in 1986 for Master of Puppets. The disappointment I felt on release day for And Justice for All has yet to be rectified.
Would Cliff be playing this "music". I think not.

If this album was produced by Flemming Rasmussen and mixed by Michael Wagener at Sweet Silence in Copenhagen it would've been a great record! The production does hurt the impact the music could've had...certainly not as bad as St. Anger did, but enough. Kaye is right on the money describing the songs sounding like high-quality demos.
I was definitely surprised by Hammet...he rips on this one.
On a side note, I think Cliff would've liked this record. It sounds like they are trying again...which is commendable.

This album is a trillion times better than St. Anger. That said, the instrumental on this album comes in as a distant 4th place behind the last 3 instrumentals Metallica did all those years ago. I agree with his thoughts on the overall production though, but I have to emphatically disagree with his take on Unforgiven III. I think that song is in my top 3 favorites on the album. Musically, no, it is not as good as the last 2 Unforgiven tracks. However, the lyrics are WAAAY better this time around. The whole 'sea-faring' aspect he took on this time around brings forth images The Illiad and The Odyssey. Pretty cool stuff. Don Kaye's an ass. He takes border-line 'controversial' stances on these albums to encourage more people to talk about him.

Testament-Formation of Damnation Iron Maiden-Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death Anything by Amon Amarth (thats singing?) Opeth-Watershed, and anything else (Metallica to Opeth: This is METAL. Megadeth-System Has Failed, , United Abominations Slipknot-All Hope Is Gone Motorhead-Motorizer Lamb of God-Redneck
...and the list goes on and on and on and on
Metallica wrote the Judas Kiss for the metal scene:
Bow Down, sell your soul to me, i will set you free.
Exactly.
And ah, ah the haters.
the haters are crying in defeat. all those pussies can do is go here and be in denial, in denial in the fact that we have the metal album fo the decade.
Haters go back to disney or your other emo garbage.
And now to the album.....
St. Anger was career suicide but death magnetic was redemption for these Gods.
The album is 10/10
Flawless.
All Nightmare Long makes you wanna commit a felony. Thrash.
That Was Just Your Life-Epic.
Judas Kiss-8 minutes of kick ass-ness
SUFFER UNTP MY APOCALYPSE
There is not one bad song.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the truth is this the most metal metallica since AFJA
if you dont like it, oh freakin well.
SO in conclusion:
Solos, great vocals, nice snare drumming, whats that i hear? BASS? yes bass.
Love it.
Metal in your face.

Here we go again. A new METALLIC CD. And the best thing about the new album is: Its ways better than St. Anger. BUt we all agree it couldnt get worse. Especially the drum sound. Its a good new album, with some good songs on it, but also with two shitty pointless compositions (Unforgiven 3 and Suicide & redemption). But anyway, this album wont get a classic MEtallica album, or even a cult album like their first 4 releases did. Im also very surprised about the last songs MY Apocalypse, sounds kinda Damage Inc., but not that overwhelming. However, good album, with some good songs, some average songs and two pointless songs, but its entirety better than expected. I give it a 8.

Metallica are definately back on the right track. After blasting this album in my car after right after buying it I am really impressed and have hated Metallica since 1996. THIS is the album that should have come out after the Black album. kirk busts out some killer guitar work which I thought he couldnt even do anymore. At Anger is is a bad memory that shouldnt have happened but Death Magnetic makes up for the past 12 years that Metallica sucked. they definately have rekindled the old fire of the 80s

I'm both a huge supporter and critic of Metallica's music. I like all of their music. I like St. Anger for mere fact that it was a turn toward the right direction even though it completely missed the bulls-eye. Having said that, Death Magnetic is a much, much bigger step in the right direction and hit the bulls-eye. My one and only small complaint is so simple that it's almost not worth mentioning because it's a matter of a song title. "Unforgiven III" is a great song that is very misleading. I say that because I really like the song, but to put the stamp of Unforgiven on it is wrong. It's not a fitting title, that's all. Maybe if they played all three in a row live, it may make more sense. But after listening to the album five times today from beginning to end, I just don't see how this is song is worthy of being a part of The Unforgiven saga. If they gave it a different name, my problem would be non-existant. But finally I can disregard St. Anger as a necessary bad dream. It unintentionally served the purpose of waking them up. Once you hit rock bottom, the only direction you can go is up. As for Death Magnetic, it certainly lived up to, and in many ways surpassed my expectations. So far my favorite song is "Broken, Beat & Scarred", but that could change at any time. After all, I'm still absorbing the album.

1- It's better than St. Anger 2- It's not even close to And Justice For All or Black Album 3- It's clear they have tried hard to get back to their roots once again.
now we have to wait for Megadeth new album. Let's wait and see what Dave is going to do.

I think it's probably fair to say that the production isn't great, but it really doesn't matter that much because the songs are as solid as hell. Secondly, Metallica have come under fire for their production quality for a great deal of their career, particularly when Justice came out, and many of you are now touting that to be their best effort.
We can't keep expecting Metallica to redefine metal, but taking into account most of the music out there today- including many of my favorite bands- they've really released a great album here. I love Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax and Annihilator, but none of their recent efforts can even compare to this album.
Everybody wants another Master of Puppets, but I think that we've learned from Slayer that putting out the same album over and over again may be a formula to appease the fans, but is certainly not the route to making a great NEW album. People want something to complain about. Let's face it- it's fun to bitch about what other people have done wrong, but if Metallica had out out Master of Puppets 2, people would still be complaining that they were recycling old songs and being unoriginal.
This album isn't perfect, so take it for what it is. I truly don't understand how any fan of Metallica couldn't enjoy this album. Particularly after the directionless abortion that was St Anger

Why would anyone, Metallica fan or not, compare this to an Opeth or Slipknot album?
I hope Dave feels the need to make the next Megadeth album thrashier in order to keep up. I've always prefered his guitar playing, and hope to hear something incredible before he gets too old to be credible.
Death Magnetic blew me away at first. It was new METAL Metallica. Then it started to lose some of its luster because metal or not, it's not THAT special. I'm going to give it some time. Maybe it will grow on me aain. I'd honestly give it a 7. Considering their age and what they've been doing for the past 17 years, how can I complain. I did buy the album today btw.

Score did change. lol It's been a good year for Metallica. They owned Bonnaroo pretty good. Glad to hear the album St. Anger should have been. Some debatable moments, but hell for as long as these guys have been doing it.. that means something. Cyanide's main riff is fun as fuck to play on guitar.

I bought it yesterday.
It's a good album, it's not mind blowing. I WISH it had the production of say, Reload, as I think that album sounded quite eerie and dark. Like Don said, it sounds like a high quality demo. I hope they seriously re-consider this "live" sound for records on the next one.
With this album being a step in the right direction, i'm looking forward to where this direction takes them after this album.
Makes me wonder if they took a leaf out of the new thrash band's books (evile etc) on their approach. After all Evile work with their ex-producer, fleming rassmusen

I'd give it an 8.5 on Richters scale. Where other bands quit at the first bump on the road, Metallica just plows their way through. Is this their best record ever? No. But it's still a damn' good record and that's all I expect from Metallica. A good, solid record with a little edge to it. Besides, if I want to hear something like Master Of Puppets or Kill 'em All, I just listen to those records. Period.

Puppets Justice Lightning Kill Em All Death Magnetic Black (I can't rank any further, since the rest didn't do it for me)
Now that being said... I think a lot of people were hoping for something that would have topped this ranking list. I just don't think that's gonna happen. I'm trying to think of an artist that had such a great early catalog who came out with something that topped their early catalog 10 - 20 years later... I can't think of any one. Especially one where it was a comercial success.
I think this album is very good. I personally wish James would sing more like he did in the past, but that may never happen again. That being said, this is the closest I have heard in a long time.
Check out these songs: "The End of the Line" 42 sec in and this thing really gets me going. "My Apocalypse" a throw back to their thrash days "Broken, Beat & Scarred" man love thier riff's on this one, they really have a pumping feel. "The Judas Kiss" is about the only song I like that has more of that newer Metallica feel to it.
Songs I could do with out: "The Unforgiven III" "Cyanide"
The rest of the album is good enough. Worth a purchase, it's the first Metallica album I have bought since the Black album (not counting cover albums).

Not since I was a teenager has Metallica been interesting to me, but I am really digging this new album and I was not expecting to even give a chance. I also like the production, I don't know what everyone is bitching about. St. Anger's production sucked, this one is not bad at all! Sounds solid!

this album is not a great album but a good, solid album. no song is truly bad on this album. some songs are better than others but overall there's no song on the album that makes you go "holy shit, this is horrible".
the production could be better in spots. some stuff gets a little muddy in spots but overall, i thought on this album the production was a little too slick. some of the heaviest, ballsiest riffs on the album don't have as much bite because the production is too polished.
production aside, i think this is the best album that Metallica is capable of. i'm glad that Metallica can still churn out a good, quality, HEAVY album. let's hope the next one is just as good!

... but Death Magnetic is not a really bad album. I hadn't expected anything from Metallica as I hated every release since 1991. I still think Lars is an embarrassing jerk, and I still think there are hardly any albums in history that are worse than St. Anger. But I was surprised in a positive way when I heard Death Magnetic. It's not great, but it doesn't suck either. And that's more than you could expect.

It's finally here the next offering from metallica, in the shape of death magnetic. Ok, granted the album cover would'nt be the greatest but don't let that fool you this is one for any metal fan to own. Metallica has always been stuck with the stigma that "it's not as good as the old stuff" when they release a new album. The last couple of albums have come up with alot of this critisism but metallica can now stand back and give all those small minded butt nuts the fingers because death has a thunderous new rage with kirk, James, Lars, and rob just not letting up. Rob who i think has had a massive influence on this album. I mean his bass is just ball busting from start to finish. This is what metallica needed a fresh new approach with a competant bassist and new producer in the shape of rick rubin he gave them "free reign" with their music and Death is the result. For those of who still say they they won't be as good as they were well i suggest that you give Death a fair hearing because each track bares resemblance's of old metallica but they have brought it into 2008 just where their music should be this is a natural progression for the band and this is an exceptional offering from them. It's premature to say but roll on the next album because i think metallica are just going to get darker and heavier but for now Death Magnetic will definatly do. Metal up your ass........... five stars.............

I almost wanted to hate this CD just so I could put the nail in the coffin for Metallica ever making good songs again. But, I have been shocked so far at what this album is doing. Reminiscent of the CD cover, that coffin has been opened to show, much to my unbelief, this band still has something great. Production is rather disappointing unfortunately which cuts this down to a 9. Lastly, try to judge this album in the midst of other metal music TODAY. From that perspective, probably the best CD of 2008 without considering production.

...how some of the guys here says: "oh, i miss jason... he sometimes stood up to james and lars, and i always liked his backing vocal! trujillo is a bitch, but he'll do what they told him, blah blah"
you can bet they are the same guys that hated jason back in the day, at least those of them who were born at the time he stepped in.
than, when hating metallica became the national sport, they started to say that he was the only metal guy left i the band, the only one with integrity.
Yeah, you know what i call true metal integrity? Rock Star Supernova... a reality show!
You know what i call staying true? touring with Tommy Lee!
the truth is that jason was/is a cool guy and a good bass player, but he's not a hero. he's just a regular guy.
and if he left a sinking ship for good, as you bashers always say (and to an extent it's even true), why did he try to rejoin before they started auditioning new players?

Dude, whatever. This album is great. It may not be exactly what us die-hard Metallica fans wanted, but this IS an epic record. This album is a sweet composition of old school structuring/riffing with Load/ReLoad elements. I honestly love this. As someone said before this album is ...And Justice For Load.
I mean, as much as I love the masterpieces of their first five albums, I still love their more modern as much, you know? I've been a fan of them for about three years now and I connect with their music more on a personal level. I mean, even albums like St. Anger I can relate to. It may not be what I was looking for, but there are still some songs and treats on that record that have helped me through some rough patches.
For all of the haters out there, whatever. Metallica are back, baby!!!

You have been a fan for 3 years and you think you can judge if Metallica are back or not. Come on man give me a break. I think this is their best release since at least "The Black Album". I did like some material off "Load" thought "Reload" had 2-3 good songs "Fixxer" being one of their best riffs from that era. I hated "St Anger" and this new one is amazing so far and I like it more with each listen. Still the production no matter what will always have a negative effect on how I view the album. The song "The Day That Never Comes" sounds like a farting distorted mess and is unlistenable after the slower parts. Sucks to be honest because its a great album. The rest I can listen to just wish it had the sound of some of their previous releases or they had went with a "real" metal producer this time. Not sure why they wanted to start making metal again and went with these guys. Like the review said imagine if Colin Richardson or Andy Sneap had mixed and mastered this thing. It would crush all and might have even stood up with their old classics. These guys either need to get with those dudes next time or the likes of Kevin Shirley and do it the way Iron Maiden did their recent album.

They have 2 songs on the album that are Arch Enemy song titles. I'll have to check it out if it has a 8 rating.

yeah, I've owned it for about 24 hours now and I can honestly say that this album is the shit! No not as heavy as Slayer, Kreator, or Exodus, but way heavier than the more recent Megadeth stuff, and most of the recent Anthrax stuff (but I still have hope for those guys!!!). I guess the haters have to eat it, I would call this album a success, just by looking at the reviews. Notice how many people went track by track, or gave a lengthy review shows how much they care about the album, and not just the Metallica brand. All the guys who think this is crap, wow, I don't know what to tell you...maybe you just don't like thrash anymore, because this is what this album is.
SO YES IF YOU'RE A FAN AT ALL, GET IT, IT'S WORTH IT!

the Album Black forgotten in all of this? In twenty years??? Black was fucking amazing album because it has nothing else matters on it the old fans hate it. Well they gained the most fans by the album Black and that is why everyone hates cause they weren't underground anymore they were mainstream Metal. I gave this cd a 9 really cause I didn't expect songs like Cyanide, Judas Kiss or Apocalypse. Its not that I didn't think they could do it I didn't think they would. Metallica has always done it their way, not their fans way. If your making music you have to do it your way!!! I am glad James took the handcuffs off Kirk this album!!! They could have left the instrumental song off, great riffs but I want a finished song@!!!!!

I have been anticipating an album like this from metallica for a very long time. I just got my copy with the death magnetic pint glass and I have to say that I'm tremendously happy with the both of them. This is the BEST Metallica album since "And Justice for All" , and after a few more spins; it might just surpass it. It's got a fresh sound with plenty changes and tempos in most of the songs. I would have to say that 9 out of 10 songs on this album are exciting to listen to. That's better than I could've hoped for from these cats. Great job Metallica and I'm highly anticipating the follow-up album!!

I'm very impressed with DM... It fits nicely between justice and black..
That said, this is easily the WORST sounding album of their career....even their first has more dynamics and punch that this abomination....
Who in their right might approved the final mix and mastering of this???
MAKE THIS LOUDNESS WAR STOP!
Guitars sound thin and weak, drums sound like plastic being hit and everything blends together with horrible mushiness... IT's a DAMN SHAME....
I've heard local bands demo recording sound better than this.... what were they thinking.?
Great songs though :)

Dude, what does me being a fan of three years or twenty-six have to do with whether or not I can say they are "back" or not? Thats so juvenile, man. I've bought every single album of theirs, I have all of the dvds, I listen to their music just about every single day, I have spent so much money on these guys merchandise than you probably have the entire time you've been a fan, if you've ever been a "fan" that is, and I adore their older material more than their newer stuff. And you're saying just because I've been a fan for three years, I can't judge whether their material is even anywhere in the same universe as their older material? You're such a hypocrite.
When I found these guys music, I didn't even want to touch it because I was stuck on Megadeth for such a long time, but when I listened to Kill 'Em All, it changed my life and my perspective on what REAL Metal should be. Needless to say, I was hooked. And I'm not a fan who started with St. Anger and worked my way back up, I started with every album chronologically from the very beginning.

Some of you people have very unrealistic expectations. I agree the vocals could have been better, but this is what we've been waiting for for almost 20 years. This is a way more badass record then anything I've expected Metallica to do for well over a decade. Did you think they would go death metal? It's their most experimental since Master of Puppets. Great album, I'm giving it a 9.

8 out of 10 isn't bad but compared to other metal albums rated here that I personally (don't flame me) like; Opeth's Watershed for example getting 9.5 is ridiculous. There are some moments on the record, but it's pretty forgettable for me.
Death Magnetic is something I was drawn to since I first heard it. It is a grower. I can see people listening to it years from now. It gets a 9 from me.

Great record. James' vocals are perfect in the mix to my ears. I hate the trend of having the music buried once the singing comes in. James' vocals were mixed in well on most of the older stuff too. Not overpowering.

At one point in time, Metallica ranked as one of my top ten favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock bands. Then they dropped Load, and Re-Load and I started losing interest. However, I love Garage Inc. Even the cover of "Turn The Page" is worthy to listen to. "Free Speech For The Dumb," and "The More I See" are awesome covers, and if the production on St. Anger sounded similar to the punk/hardcore aggression of the two Discharge covers on Garage Inc., the result would have been better.
Now Metallica ranks in my top twenty favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock bands. Metallica is not only a music influence, but they inspired me to explore Underground/Obscure bands from both the United States, and Overseas. This includes current, and old school bands.
I have a book called Metallica: Unbound. This book is like a history book to me. Very interesting stories about their record store journeys with Brian Slagel from Metal Blade Records, and even passages from people who hung in the Bay Area with them like Ron Quintana--former Heavy Metal radio DJ. The book also talks about overseas tours, and festivals as well as their beginnings with Dave Mustaine and Ron McGoverny. Of course the book talks about the bus accident with Cliff Burton. There are some great photos in the book.
I also own Lars Ulrich's 1990 Metal Blade Records compilation called NWOBHM--New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. The compilation has Venom, Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Blitzkrieg, Angel Witch, Samson (featuring Bruce Dickinson), Girlschool, Saxon, and even a decent Def Leppard tune from Def Leppard's first album On Through The Night.
Metallica helped spawn the independent Heavy Metal record label scene, as well as independent Record labels helping them out. Brian Slagel from Metal Blade really helped launch Metallica's career.
Death Magnetic is a great comeback for Metallica! "Broken, Beat, and Scared," "All Nightmare Long," "Suicide & Redemption," "My Apocalypse," "The Judas Kiss," and "That Was Just Your Life" are my favorite tracks on the record. The heaviest material on Death Magnetic resembles ...And Justice For All era Metallica, and there are elements from the Black Album, and Garage Days Re-revisited as well.
I am not a Metallica fanboy, but I respect the mark they have made on the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock world.

Hypocrite I am not when you try and preach about the band being back to true form yet you only got into them after "St. Anger" was out doesn't hold as much weight as someone who grew up listening to the band or spent 20 years listening to them like me. I guess I am a hypocrite but you spend half your post trying to prove how much of a fan you are by how much merch you bought. Then you question if I am even a fan. Ha ha. Not juvenile there at all buddy. Yeah maybe I am a bit off but I have my opinion just like trying for a job interview you can't say that your 3 years experience qualifies you as much as someone with 10, 15, or 30 years can you? Same point I was trying to make. Moving on I don't feel like having a discussion with someone who uses the term "haters". Thanks Fred Durst.

"Death Magnetic" is almost perfect mix of "...And Justice For All"/"Metallica (Black Album)" and some of new elements found on their Load/St. Crap releases. This "almost perfect mix" is refers to the not so great instrumental 'Suicide & Redemption' (too long) and 'The Unforgiven III' wich is a good song but don't fit well with rest of the album. I'm not impressed with production either - it's too loud in the mix and drum sound is not for my taste. And yes, Lars uninspiring drumming don't help the case also.
Apart from all that, this is one GREAT record from Metallica! "That Was Just Your Life", "All Nightmare Long", 'Judas Kiss', 'My Apocalypse'... - did ANYONE imagine that these guys can deliever this thrash metal masterpieces after all this years? I sure didn't!
METALLICA - WELCOME BACK TO REAL METAL KINGOM!

Death Magnetic is a great, heaving gulp of fresh air amid a metal scene all too ready to kick each other in the nuts and express their critiques with little or no justification/ intent other than abject hatred of certain bands or genres. Don't listen to these misreable pricks. D.M is a classic. The review is ok but complainin about sound quality is pointless. Its metal up yer ass..! Whatdya want a sandwich as well? Andy Sneap seems to possess the magic touch these days and methinks he wasn't trendy enough to be considered. Rick Rubin's track record is dodgy to say the least. Ballbreaker anyone..? Those who understood the fukd up trainwreck that was St Anger will also get the intent here. Those who heard the band do Whiplash the first time in the early Eighties will also feel the same rush. Best album..? Let's just say it's the first one since Puppets where I've liked every track.

Unfairly and critically panned, 2003's 'St Anger' was a return to Metallica's speed driven 80's days, even if differing in sound from that halcyon period. Five years later and that non-problem has been remedied in no uncertain terms with a true return to the sound that made Metallica metal legends. In other words thrash on a large scale, scathing riffs, speed, lengthy compositions and for the real purists an instrumental running almost ten minutes. Rick Rubin appears to have captured the raw essence of the bands sound with a more refined production than 'St Anger', but one which seamlessly blends a mixture of all Metallica eras, with discernable nods to 'Kill 'Em All' to 1991's self titled monster. Most importantly this is heavy. Devastatingly so.
At a running time of nearly 80 minutes this is an epic foray. But not once did 'Death Magnetic' fail to lose me despite the plethora of seven minute plus tracks. 'That Was Just Your Life' reverts back to the much hallowed days of classic Meatllica openers such as 'Battery' and Blackened', with a slow beginning, building pace before launching into vintage thrash segments, with Hammett and Hetfield's riffing reaching mammoth proportions. Hammett's soloing recalls the 'Master of Puppet's era, no doubt appeasing those who loathed the lack of solos on 'St Anger'. The blueprint for the album set, 'The End of the Line' follows in similar suit, with some of the riffs at the start echoing 'Load' before quickly dissolving into a 1991 haze except with speed. This track especially reaches into all of the bands past sounds. Critics will be silenced by the brute force of 'Broken, Beat and Scarred', delving into some vicious landscapes through twisted, distorted and ugly riffs and tangents which eclipse Slayer even. 'The Day That Never Comes' toys with 'Fade to Black' like effectiveness, but soon develops into a thrasher with NWOBHM overtones and shredding riffs I haven't heard from Metallica in 20 years. Galloping along afterwards is 'All Nightmare Long', offering riffs from the thrash gutter and doses of speed almost unfathomable.
'Cynanide' is a combination of 'Reload' and 'Metallica', heavier naturally, but always with that intangible sense of melody which is one of the reasons Metallica succeeded to begin with and what continues to set them apart. 'The Unforgiven III' continues the saga which began in 1991 and continued in 1997, again in the heavy ballad style of its predecessors but not imitating them at all. Hetfield is in fine voice and Metallica continues to excel with this melodic approach, 17 years later. Flirting with bursts of speed is 'The Judas Kiss', notable for Hammett bending his six strings in every possible direction. This leads into ten minute instrumental 'Suicide and Redemption', which truly proves Metallica's intent to capture the mindset of the earlier years, when they made an art form out of this with 'Call of Kutlu, 'Orion' and 'To Live is to Die. This could easily be 1988 with the guitar tone used, not to mention the intense build up deserving of such a track. All four members are worthy of praise, with Ulrich impressing behind the kit. Closing thrasher 'My Apocalypse' runs only five minutes and is pure pandemonium, raging forth maniacally, to the point where this could pass for a lost track from 'Kill 'Em All'. Hard to believe? Believe it. All out thrash!
I recall disgruntled fans begging Metallica to return to this sound when 'St Anger' was released. That was not enough for some and if this isn't then you can hardly call these listeners 'fans'. Metallica have sealed the deal with 'Death Magnetic'. This is the sound which took a 20 year break to a large degree, but has returned fiercer than ever. For a group of men well into their 40's it is a major accompishment. This serves to remind why the glut of thrash bands were always second division. Even in 2008 the remaining likes of 'Testament and Exodus still sound second rate to Metallica. I had to shake my head in disbelief at this onslaught. It's still nice to be blown away occasionaly. It takes true masters to do it.
Ten out of Ten

"If this album was produced by Flemming Rasmussen and mixed by Michael Wagener at Sweet Silence in Copenhagen it would've been a great record!

Like don kane said here we go again... A Metallica for eveyone to love and love to hate... But thats what you get with Metallica now days since they Love it or hate The biggest Metal band ever thanks to all of us metal heads....This is the album that should come after the black album... its only taken 17years but it was worth the wait... I only have 1 complaint... And the production lacks punch...it doesnt grab you by the throat i was kinda hopping for since the songs have that ability...Like All Nightmare Long And Judas Kiss would given if production was sharper...And Who Said there is no bass in the album?? Just shows you didnt listen to the album. ill Give 1 song Cyadine Its sad that most you ppl will give this alum a comment on just 1 listen or just because it is Metallica. St .Anger wasnt their best album we all get that even tho some songs had killer riffs just shit drum sound and no solos for song 8 mins long.. But wise up ppl when it comes down to the history of metal and thats all fucking forms of it This band sits alongside the band that started the movment Black Sabbath..Metallica love or hate it Metallica Revolutionized Metal... And all you blast beat black/death metal fans metallica with slayer and venom are 3 reasons u have that metal genre Plus Others i know.. How do i know this because im old enough to have watched and listen to black.death metal grow but not that old ive become ignorant to Metal and all its forms..
