Following more than a year of relentless hype and a host of excellent live performances, the new IRON MAIDEN CD is finally upon us, and predictably enough, it represents nothing more than an attempt to recapture past glories without any effort being made to update the group's sound to accommodate younger fans who may not have been exposed to the act's music the first time around. Granted, IRON MAIDEN have always made albums that sounded decidedly alike, and compared to the drivel that the band issued under their name while being fronted by the ridiculously inferior Blaze Bayley, Brave New World is a virtual masterpiece, its every track echoing the group's finest moments from the '80s. However, in an era of musical innovation—even if it includes the fusion of elements that are seemingly as at odds with one another as metal and hip hop appear to be—IRON MAIDEN's regurgitation of past musical moments sounds positively tired and uninspired, with the overlong, sleep-inducing epics like "Nomad" and "Ghost of the Navigator" coming across like a bad trip down the nostalgia lane, their effectiveness reduced merely to an overriding air of familiarity rather than the songs' own musical merits.

...

It goes without saying that the old-school metal "purists" will hail Brave New World as a flag-waving return to form from one of the genre's most influential and enduring artists. Ultimately, however, IRON MAIDEN's latest CD will appeal to no one but the die-hard fans of the group, and as such, it will fail to leave a lasting mark on the face of the current metal scene.

The fact that this review contradicts every other out there on the internet should be enough to indicate to the reader that this atrocious rating is based more on the writer's personal hang ups than any sort of realistic attempt at judging the material at hand. Maybe he confused maiden with the new Priest. I don't know. Correct rating:

9/10

THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM NO MATTER HOW YOU QUALIFY IT OR WHAT EARLIER ALBUMS YOU COMPARE IT TO. ALMOST EVERY SONG IS SOLID AND SO WHAT IF IT SOUNDS LIKE ALOT OF THEIR GLORY DAYS ALBUMS. THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANY GLORY DAYS IF THEY HADN'T PUT OUT GREAT ALBUMS. STICK WITH WHAT WORKS AND THIS ONE DOES. ONE CAN ONLY HOPE THEY CONTINUE TO PUT OUT WORK AS GOOD AS THIS ONE. I HAVE ALL THEIR ALBUMS AND I WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO SAY ANY ONE IS ACTUALLY BETTER FROM BEGINNING TO END THAN THIS ONE.

Brave New World is a great album, so don't just give it 5/10 just because it's not popular right now. Also, you can't call the stuff they released with Blaze 'drivel' Both the X-Factor and Virtual XI are great albums. If you can't take a band changing it's style slightly to fit a new vocalist, don't call yourself a fan.

I’m actually serious about this question and if you do it’s fucking sad that an uneducated
retard such as your self gets paid for giving his opinion. By the looks of what you wrote
you don’t know much about the metal scene and what people like.

You called parts of “Brave New World” sleep inducing. You’ve got to be fucking
kidding, sorry if you can’t keep your attention on such great song like “Ghost in the
Navigator”. You might want to see a doctor cause I have the feeling you may be autistic.
Don’t know what that means look it up.

Now as for their style still being the same.... well of course it is. If it wasn’t it wouldn’t
be Iron Maiden any more, do you want them to get rid of their galloping happy metal riffs
fuck no!!

So maybe you should review Andrew WK’s album because poser metal bands like that
might be more up your alley.

Iron Maiden is my most favorite band but this cd, is good but not great. When I think back to the last Iron Maiden studio album with Bruce Dickinson Fear Of The Dark, or the last 2 Dickinson solo cds Accident OF Birth and Chemical Wedding, it doesn't seem nearly as good as those cds. The cd is typical Iron Maiden, but None of the songs really hit me hard, the guitar solos really didn't shred as much, and there wasn't as much progressive style as on other releases. There are no real bad tracks but no real killer tracks either. Ghost Of The Navigator is my favorite song. The wickerman is cool, awsome video too. I dunno why they gave it a 5 out of 10 that is a terrible rating. Overall I'd give the cd a 7 out of 10. A good but not a great.

This is truly Maiden's best album since 7th son, hands down! The perfect song writing, and textbook Iron Maiden riffs are still there in all their glory. Iron Maiden aren't washed up, If anything this album proves they can compete with any metal act around today. &quotBlood Borthers&quot, &quotDream Of Mirrors&quot and &quotThe Nomad&quot prove just how amazing these guys still are. Steve Harris will always be one of the best songwriters of metal in my opinion, and the playing of Murray,Smith and Gers is extraordinary. I'd rather listen to this album, than any album by any one of these nu-metal bands who all sound the same and have no originality to their music at all. 5 out of 10 my ass!

Dont get angry at him. I thought his review was funny as hell heh heh

BNW is not without its faults (they do not make use of the 3 guitar attack for example) and its not Maidens best imho but its got two awesome tracks in nomad and thin line.

And to a certain degree he is correct. MTV and the metal scene in general like to hate Maiden but so what? As Maiden would say &quotThe is only one 'em and thats fuck 'em&quot.

Even if it is only 'die hard fans' buying the albums as Borivoj Krgin says ... well put it this way world wide Iron Maiden have a die hard fanbase of prob around about 2 million or so and the die hard will be around for a long long time and Maiden will still be around for a long long time to come.

Oh and Dance Of Death (Maidens new album) will be released in Sept.

It does not matter what the critics like Borivoj Krgin say (remember the Maiden motto &quotThe is only one 'em and thats fuck 'em&quot.

Make sure u r one of the die hard millions that buys Dance Of Death - I promise u that its gonna be the best metal album of the year :-)

If the fans like it then that's all that matter because it's the fans that support the band, not the critics. From what I've seen of the comments on this review the fans disagree. I do too. This is an awesome album. Would you prefer is Bruce went all trendy and tried to rap?! Honestly, I think Bruce is an amazing vocalist but even he can't rap and still make a good Iron Maiden album. Wickerman is a good song. It kills live, as is evidenced on the Rock in Rio DVD, and from my own experience (Toronto, 2003). Most of the others though, meh. And this is from a huge IM fan. Now the songs aren't BAD. Mathematically, they are all perfect Maiden songs. Take The Mercenary: it has everything a Maiden song needs...but something just doesn't click.

Be Quick or be Dead clicked from way back, along with Fear of the Dark and (IMO) Weekend Warrior. All those were penned without Smith. Now he and Bruce are back, so why don't many of these? I think it's because Maiden are still shaking off that rut they got into after Adrian left in '89. It's still clearing up, but even Bruce's and Adrian's skills haven't erased it yet; ruts are powerful things.

Dance of Dead is way better. Kind of strange to be saying that on a review that was penned 3 years before DoD came out...
Ah, technology.

If I want experimentation, I listen to Mike Patton, Meshuggah and Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects, Devin Townsend, Waltari, Tool, Spastic Ink, Dream Theater, Opeth or Apocalyptica.

I don't expect a band that started up 30 years ago to reinvent the wheel. If I want some more experimental "Maiden" sounding stuff, I put on Bruce Dickinson's solo albums. All I want from Steve Harris & Co. are good and timless heavy rock and metal songs, nothing more, nothing less. And they delivered good songs on Brave New World and Dance Of Death. Paschendale is one of the newer compositions that's up there with the best Maiden material.

And nobody in their right mind could claim that Maiden did not change. From the punkish Di'anno years to Powerslave, probably their heaviest album, to the streamlined and sleekly Somewhere In Time, the playful Seventh Son, the introspective and dark X-Factor and the more proggy current albums, there is enough variation within the Maiden framework to satisfy me.

It's all about the songs and all acoustic intros and repetitive choruses aside, the Iron Maiden songwriting is still interesting and enjoyable, for the most part. At this particular point in time, none of the other groundbreaking metal acts (Sabbath, Priest, Metallica...) can top Iron Maiden as far as songwriting is concerned. What more can a long time metal fan ask for?

First:
Yes, Nomad is a terrible song, and deserves a 3/10 itself.
Second:
You're still a retarded reviewer, because this whole album is much better than a mere 5/10. The Wicker Man was no "feeble attempt", it was a great success in itself.
Just because they didn't create a brand new genre doesn't mean that the album sucks. And where do you get off saying all their songs sound alike? I have serious doubts you've even listened to all their music. The only song that really sounds like their older music a lot is Fallen Angel. The rest has mostly a distict sound.
What is with you? Reading that review, you'd think you had a stick up your ass from some personal hatred of Iron Maiden (did you notice you said they were trying to recreate the music that made them famous, but you never complimented the older sounds, as a typical unbiased reviewer would've, showing you've never liked any of Iron Maiden's music, and even refered to it in a way that suggests that you've always hated them - very mature for a reviewer, using an article to get out their personal misbalanced emotions).
Also, note that most of these songs sound at their best live.

Also, this album isn't as good as their old ones, but it certainly is better than a 5.0. Grow up.

get a better review team. air-fighting hardcore promoting girl jean wearing people are not of sane enough mind to review something that's (i dunno) good. or people who could possibly pass for a metalhead. i know it's crazy, but hey. it's worth a shot

and to the reviewer. did you even listen to the album? and i mean more then once, and not between "heart of a dying autumn" or "emotional discontent from within" or some band with a name like that.

I give it a 9 out of 10. A very good, updated sounding Maiden CD. I liked it better than Dance of Death and A matter of life and death. In fact, the only song that I didnt like was Nomad. The rest are great. Especillay love Wicker Man, Blood Brothers and Dream of Mirrors. All great songs.

Going to see the mighty Maiden May 21, 2008 in San Antonio. Cant wait!!

The same guy who gave this a 5 is the one who gave a H.I.M. album a 10.

Figure that one out.

This is an awesome album, one of the best albums of their career ... if you had been following maiden up to the point it was released (mainly no prayer - virtual eleven) ... it is hands down the best since 7th son, and with bruce and adrian just coming from the equally great (if not better) chemical wedding and Accident of Birth ... its the fresh breath maiden needed to go on strong ... too bad dance of death and AMOLAD didn't follow suit ... I'd honesty say that brave new world is going to be maidens last great album ... sad but true

"....without any effort being made to update the group's sound to accommodate younger fans ...."

Come on, say it, you expected Maiden with come up with some nu-metal shit that you are comfortable listening to. WHAT effort should they have made exactly to attract new fans? Use DJ? I'm sure many Slipknot fans would have liked that. And Nomad is one of the greatest song, just not a metal song, ever. I cant believe this guy is actually in charge of this shit hole site. Fuck Blabbermouth.

Wow, I know I usually say musical taste is subjective... but in this case... this reviewer is WRONG. If you're into metal and review this album badly... there is something wrong there.

"it represents nothing more than an attempt to recapture past glories without any effort being made to update the group's sound to accommodate younger fans who may not have been exposed to the act's music the first time around"

That's the point. Iron Maiden isn't about "updating" their sound to fit in with the new trends, it's about pure metal. Maiden has always stayed true to their roots, and there's nothing wrong with that. Still disgusted by this review.

A 5?!? Wow blabbermouth, you have really done it this time. This awesome record is pure motherfucking Iron Maiden goodness and you went and gave it a 5 for some bullshit reason. You have failed.

I've listened to this album since 2002, and I still love it. It's my favourite Maiden album along with NOTB and Powerslave. I've never disagreed more with a review...

Check out over 200,000 fans on Rock in Rio singing along to some of these songs and tell me this album is a 5? Would it take more fans than that to convince you? Maybe you are more into trendy hot topic bands or Britney Spears and Avril Lavine
