Given that DAATH's first full-length, "The Hinderers" was a well-intended, yet ultimately directionless and obviously pieced together foray into the blood-red waters of hybrid-metal, one that even the band themselves would rather see take a dirtnap (let's see who picks up on this one…), I'm not going spend too much dwelling on said disc. I will say that it was at least a decent effort that showed a band with the potential to live up to the hype which was thrust upon them. Well, it may have taken a year and a half, a new singer (Sean Z), the loss of keyboardist Mike Kameron (and with him almost any trace of industrial influence) and the procurement of Kevin Talley's (ex-CHIMAIRA, ex-DYING FETUS, et al.) fulltime services, but through it all, the real DAATH has arrived.

"The Concealers" sticks out from the current crop of metal albums in the way that "Rust In Peace" stuck out almost two decades ago. That's not to say the two records sound anything alike, but DAATH guitarists Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler are well on their way to becoming the Mustaine/Friedman of their time. My comparison comes from the fact that, like the MEGADETH classic, "The Concealers" employs a highly skilled twin guitar attack that delivers a blistering tour de force of riffing and soloing, but in a way that puts the steak before the sizzle. In other words, the duo place far more focus on the song itself, instead of showboating it like the lads in DRAGONFORCE might. Also, much like 'DETH juiced up their thrash/speed metal roots and took a step beyond their peers, so too does DAATH with modern American metal (breakdown-free, thank Odin), death and melo-death. The MEGADETH/DAATH simile ends, however, when you look at the roads the two bands have traveled and see that these promising upstarts have a long ways to go before reaching the song-smithing peak that Mr. Mustaine was sitting atop of back in the day. They'll no doubt reach that point someday as the relentless "Sharpen The Blades", which allows Sean Z's mostly audible and angry-as-Corey-Taylor-wished-he-was vocals to lay down meaty hooks atop some blistering riffage or the dark and dynamic "The Worthless" prove. A unique blend of proggish folk, melodic black and that little twist of DAATH on "The Unbinding Truth" makes said tune one of the album's most memorable. While the band's multi-faceted approach, which finds devastating throat-slicers like "Incestuous Amplification" and "Wilting On The Vine" oddly placed amongst the passable keyboard interlude "Duststorm" and DIMMU BORGIR-styled "…Of Poisoned Sorrows", nearly all eleven of these tracks have earned their way onto the album.

Individually, all five members of DAATH have the chops to fill this entire album with ego-stroking displays of their own talents, but they don't. In fact, this is a more of a calculated, determined and focused 'band' effort than many produced by musicians of lesser ilk. The overall delivery may not be what it could, and DAATH does lack the hard-earned experience that comes from ten-plus years of dogging it out, but they've found their footing on that proverbial ladder; let the climbing begin.

This album is awesome. This review is horrible.

"The overall delivery may not be what it could, and DAATH does lack the hard-earned experience that comes from ten-plus years of dogging it out""

And then he gives it an 8?
Are you fucking kidding me? Ladies and Gentleman, this album sounds like it came from a band of metal-vererans. Oh wait....

IT DID! This dude really missed the boat on this review.
The songs are all very well written. The producion is really good, and the TONES are out of this world. Emil Werstler steps up his game BIG time on this album, as does Kevin Talley.

Really though, the best part of this ablum is the unique sound Daath has cultivated. This album is fresh, unique, technical, well written, and well produced.

not usually a fan of this style of metal but i must say this album was an enjoyable listen. great guitar tone and drum sound with a definate focus on song structure as opposed to just individual wankery. the generic metal vocals do get a little, well...generic...but the music more than makes up for it. they definetly have their own sound and that is refreshing to hear in the realm of "popular" (or at least potential to be popular) metal.

It used to fire me up when a review was so far off base. Now it just makes me laugh. For a technically played ass kicking.....you can't go wrong with this cd. Kevin Talley is a master.

I read an interview with the singer when 1st album came out and was intrigued by his intelligence and the philosophy he was talking about for the band, etc. but was very disappointed by the album. This sounds like a band worth giving a second chance, and i'll do that! Hope i'm not letdown again!

Everything about it is awesome; the guitars, the melody lines, the hooks, and the vocals are LIGHT YEARS ahead of what I heard on "The Hinderers."

Just because people talk about death metal's "cookie monster" vocals, it doesn't mean that your singer should actually SOUND like Cookie Monster.

Huge, huge improvement over the last one in every way imaginable.

I just love how people think reviews and other listener's tastes should conform to their own beliefs. Not to mention that they not only rely on a numeric rating system, but actually take it personally!

Pathetic that they call themselves metal fans. It used to be about being open minded and accepting extreme metal listeners as peers rather than enemies - even if they had differing tastes. Those were the days...

No doubt, man. The new Absu slays; it's astonishing that they put out something of that calibre after what I would consider a slew of mediocrity. That being said, Daath has delivered a great album here. It's head and shoulders above their last outing.

Oh, and lol at even mentioning LOG and God Forbid. Wrath is boring. Earthsblood is amazingly worse. Not to bash on LOG; I liked Palaces & Ashes.

These guys have definetly stepped it up a few notches in every way. This band is freshly-reborn as a highly efficient killing machine.

Spot on about the Eyal/Emil guitar tag team. Get over the Mustaine/Friedman comparisons, these guys are new century and at the forefront of cutting edge metal musicianship. Criminally underrated duo.

But don't take MY word for it, go check out the new stuff at

Say what you will about their debut but it was far from generic in my opinion, anxious to hear the new stuff. DETH makes a very good point in his comment. To many whiny bitch metal fans nowa days,if all you you do is talk shit about bands what fuckin' bands are left to actually like?

I loved the experimentation of the Hinderers. But this album is a lot more consistent and mature, pretty heavy with well written songs. The guitar playing is fantastic, these guys aren't like every tech-death band that just sweeps and taps out guitar solo's, these guys actually can have some sort of expression in their playing and have a unique style on guitars. Vocals are a little generic but I prefer Sean Z to Sean Farbers vocals.

Incestuous Amplification kicks arse.

Apparently the vocals on The Hinderers was sang by Mike Kameron the Keyboardist. Sean Farber didn't join the band until after the album was recorded.

I love this new album. Definitely an under-rated band, and whoever says these are generic must be listening to a different band cause The Hinderers had ample amounts of experimentation and different sounds then any ordinary band.

I'd put these guys in the same category as children of bodom, good players but ultimately uninspired, boring and just plain old generic. There's no heart here, just metal by numbers. I listened to this entire album 3 times already and the third was a fuckin chore. Hordes of chaos is still the thrash metal album to beat this year.

I really liked the 1st album. The keyboards gave it flow and the vocalist may not be a Tardy or a Lindberg, but had growl that was comprehensible.
This new album however, is metalcore. And the new vocalist sounds like everyone else.

concealers a lot better than this... I dunno if I'm wierd or nuts or what, but this album didn't gel with me at all. new vocals sound kinda bad, drums are performed perfectly but theres not much feel to them, they feel very boring compared to the first cd. I liked the keyboards... theres maybe one song on the new album i like whereas on concealers there was maybe one song i didn't like.

dissapointment IMO, or maybe I just expected something else... if you liked it, good... not quite my taste.

That being said I would like to say tht Daath is refreshing and very cool.. Kevin Talley was on my favorite Chimaira album and is a fucking monster!! Hope that these guys keep on progressing..
