Since the Scumdogs of the Universe first landed on this planet some 25 years ago, we've been treated with some of the very best (and worst) in comedic shock rock. Let's face it, though, no matter how good or bad GWAR was sounding at any given period in their career, the albums have always been a distant second to the live show. GWAR is a visual band who releases their records simply as an excuse to hit the road and rip the fuck out of latex effigies and shower people with bodily fluids. While we keep eating every politician-decapitating, blood-'n'-piss-drenched minute like a fat kid gobbles down ice cream, the music… well let's be honest, the music got bad. Looking back at the last couple of GWAR shows I attended, I can remember being far from the only one in attendance that was oblivious to and less than impressed, with the newer material the band played. It seemed that metal's favorite aliens had spent too much time on this rock and the overbearing banality of our planet's popular music had finally taken its toll on the band. Or maybe Oderus ran out of crack and sobriety negated the songwriting. Whatever the issue was, they aren't having it anymore as "Lust In Space" is a welcome return GWAR's glory days.

One of the thrashier albums in GWAR's discography, "Lust In Space" delivers an energy and quality we haven't heard from this band in some time. The album starts with a slowly plucked clean guitar and a sullen Oderus sardonically venting his misery. The song builds into an upbeat thrash fest that switches gears into a nice little rhythmic chug, but not before Oderus spews one the album's best lines with "…and although I created you, I have always hated you. Fuck this place!" Classic GWAR. Thrash n' roll (with a touch of 'core') monsters "Let Us Slay" and "Damnation Under God" promise to draw blood in the pit once GWAR takes this show on the road. The punk-tinged "Metal Metal Land" and "Where Is Zog" bring the always expected goofball/pervert humor to the table, while "Make A Child Cry" comes across like he means it.

"Lust In Space" does contain a little bit of filler, but overall this is one of GWAR's best; ranking right up there with "Scumdogs Of The Universe" and "America Must Be Destroyed". Given the album's ending, the commentary on humanity "Parting Shots", seems to describe GWAR's final glimpse upon the planet they've spent the last two and a half decades conquering, I have to wonder if this their swan song. Have they finally escaped this miserable little place and headed home? Has the human race seen the last of GWAR? I sure in the hell hope not, but if so they kicked our asses one last time on the way out.

They regained their drive with Violence Has Arrived and have been releasing quality albums since.

...or likely both.

GWAR began their move towards recording more serious records with Violence Has Arrived and realistically, Lust in Space might as well have been "War Party" part 2 in terms of a stylistic standpoint. Like GWAR or hate them, at least have some factual basis for your criticism.

You could've just said you hadn't heard anything recently released by GWAR and been honest about it instead.

This album is full of filler music from Gwar and comes NO WHERE CLOSE to the brilliance of BEYOND HELL. Awful review from someone who obviously has not listened to War Party or BEYOND HELL. I love GWAR but LIS has barely 3 decent songs and sounds gay compared to the BH.

The filler and gayness you speak of is a return to form. Violence, War party and beyond hell definitely took things to a new level of heaviness, but if you've been down since scumdogs....The gay filler is part of the charm. Black and huge, king queen, have you seen me, morality squad, poor old tom, sadaam a go go .....All "gay"....All awesome

This tool obviously hasn't heard any of the latest albums, as said a few times above, VHA was a return to form and a bit more focus on the 'metal' band that is Gwar. I think this disc punches you in the face from the start and carries right through to the end, how Jizmak plays it live in his costume and doesn't pass out is beyond me. All hail the mighty Gwar and the real fans feel people like the guy writing this review have only seen the live show and know nothing of the music, your loss poser.

Haven't bought a GWAR album since America Must Be Destroyed...but I always go see them live. First time I saw them was pre-Hello-O tour. Always great live, even in the early days.

just as disappointing as their last 2. They've totally lost it. I was looking forward to giving them one more chance, but there's nothing interesting about their music anymore. I guess they'll rely on their live show from now on.

WTF is this guy talking about!! The last 3 albums from GWAR have been fantastic! I'll take "Violence has arrived", "Beyond Hell", and "War Party" over "hell-o" and "This toilet earth" any day of the week.

I've been listening to GWAR since 1992. And after "this toilet earth" they got shittier and shittier with every album after wards. but once "Violence has arrived" came out they came back in full force and haven't stopped putting out quality tunes since. I'm sure "lust in space" is awesome as well!

I've seen GWAR about 4 times in the last 2 years...and if anything their LIVE show is suffering. The last time I saw them about 6 months ago the show was actually kinda boring (the highlight was they brought back sleazy) Go watch the saddam a go-go video to see what their lives show USED to be like.

However when "beyond hell" first came out, and they played the entire album live...that show was amazing!

Am I the only one out there who thinks That everything Gwar EVER put out was phenominal? Sure, We Kill Everything and Carnival Of Chaos were a little silly, but nonetheless brilliant! Not everything has to be Mega-heavy thrash metal. Gwar is, was and always shall be the BEST!
