Detroit's THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER hit the ground running with debut album "Unhallowed" and has never looked back. The group's tightly wound, short, sharp, and unrelenting brand of melodic death metal has been embraced by fans worldwide. The rise has been a meteoric one, each album more successful than the last, culminating with "Nocturnal". A DVD called "Majesty" served as a kind of capstone to that three-album run and nonstop touring.

Now comes "Deflorate", an album that exceeds the accomplishments of previous albums on virtually every level. The songs are far more individually identifiable, the melodies more memorable, and the arrangements across the album the most varied to date. The addition of Ryan Knight (ex-ARSIS) has paid big dividends as well. In addition to his writing contributions, which give the album an added dynamic, the solos stand out far more than has been the case in the past too. The album as a whole is demonstrative of a group that understands its sound and its appeal to fans, yet still manages to progress within those parameters.

What remains unchanged is the sheer ferocity that this group has always brought to the table. That merciless attack that melts faces hasn't changed, nor has the act's ability to pack one hell of a punch in the shortest time possible, leaving you out of breath and begging for more. On "Death Panorama", the guys do so in less than two minutes. That also happens to be one of several cuts where Trevor Strnad utilizes his low vocals to a much greater extent. "Throne of Lunacy" is another track where the lows lead the way. Strnad also enunciates better on the album. The guy has clearly put effort into making his vocals as a whole more interesting to the listener.

"Deflorate" is a 34-minute exercise in how to get the most of every minute of music and still leave the listener beaten and bloodied. Whether it is a standout like "Necropolis" (the melody is fantastic), a vintage ripper like "Black Valor", or the epic-length (a whopping five minutes) closer "I Will Return", the music is written in a way that has the listener eagerly paying attention to every note played. With "Deflorate", THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER proves more convincingly than ever that they are one of the top extreme metal acts in the world. Few do justice to the style the way these guys do.

This is a brilliant death metal album. Coming so soon after their DVD Majestic, Deflorate is definitely a step up from the last couple albums. I loved Nocturnal, but this takes the BDM sound to a another level, as hokey as that sounds. I hope this lineup (especially with Shannon Lucas on drums) keeps it together for awhile, as I think they've finally gotten their sound honed.

I gotta agree with Kaplan11. Nocturnal was great but this is a whole new level for the band. The DVD was great and Ryan is a huge addition. Can't wait to catch them live again. Trevor sounds his best by far so far.

I still like nocturnal a lot even tho the cd tails off at the end. Miasma was the killer album though. Flies is my favorite song. I'll have to keep listening to this cd and see how i feel. Don't get me wrong this cd is awesome I'm just trying to see where i place it among their own records. All their records are a 10 to me so we will see. I think i know what you mean, but it's not utter garbage. I see Nocturnal as a masterpiece that was incredibly hard to top, since i love Nocturnal from start to finish - it has no weak songs if you ask me.
But if you replaced, let's say, two to three songs from Nocturnal with songs from Deflorate, it would make no big difference.

Deflorate is stagnation on a very, very high level. I still find a few standout tracks on it - i love Valor, Necropolis, Denounced/Disgraced, The most tender and I will return and i find those songs very memorable.

I know it's been talked over and over again, but still i miss John, his Guitar tone and his soloing style, even though Ryan is a great guy and technically better.

Btw take your time and listen to it some more. At first i found Deflorate quite boring as well, but it grew on me pretty fast. You gotta search for the passages that make the songs special (and trust me, there are some).

It sounds good but nothing special. It's not that I dislike this band, but almost every song is interchangable. There's very few that actually stand out as unique tracks. Same fast beats, same guitar tones, same time signatures.

The vocal ranges are great and the musicianship is there, but ultimately they play the same song over and over. It's gets a little boring.

I must admit I too for some reason had always dismissed this band as some sort of LoG type rubbish. Remembe hearing them many years back and being un-impressed and giving them a wide berth ever since. Just given this a listen and I`m completely wrong, this is nothing like LoG anr CoB, just a kick ass melodic death metal album. Did they change their style somewhere along the way or am I getting whatever I thought I heard years ago mixed up with something else?

finally some positive feedback that this band deserves. i'm glad to see that BDM is finally catching on by reading some of your reviews - but some of you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. This band has done nothing but improve since Unhallowed. Once Miasma was released I think it was obvious that BDM was NOT metalcore or to even be remotely associated with bands like LOG.

with the release of Nocturnal, BDM found their "sound." although i have read that some of you think Nocturnal was better, I would have to respectfully disagree. Nocturnal had some very memorable melodies, no doubt about that. deflorate, on the other hand, really is a step ABOVE nocturnal in many ways. first off - the music. these guys were able to preserve the sound they coined in Nocturnal while growing to be much more technical.

some of you guys complain about not being able to distinguish the songs from one another. are you kidding me? this album may have the MOST distinguishable songs as of yet. some of the songs have more complex melodies than previous efforts, and i think this is throwing some people off. but if you give it a good listen, nearly every song has a memorable chorus hook, whether it be some sort of tremelo picked riff, or even some contrasting motion (a lah emperor). these guys dont' do the usual harmonize the main guitar melody as much anymore, another thing that me be throwing some of you off. instead, they may have two melody lines played by each guitar player that intersect each other at harmonizing intervals.

what am i trying to say? they are THE SAME band they were in nocturnal, only slightly more complex and intense. even trevor has stepped it up in a huge way. more lows than ever on this album with a more maniacal sounding high scream. the bass is even very audible - bart hardly ever follows the main riff anymore, which is awesome. drums - it's fucking shannon, enough said. he is beastly. and ryan - much better solos now. i know some of you prefer the previous solos but you have to admit these new solos are much better written and each have more of an individual identity of their own, while john's solos were sometimes repeats of themselves (listen to miasma, i swear every fucking solo ended the same with a descending harmonic minor interval that he used EVERY time)

Kudus bdm - awesome new album

and as for the guy who reviewed without listening - go fuck yourself. at least listen to an album before you review it. you shouldn't even be in here.

this band is definitely not mallcore, or any of that hot topic scene sh!t. ever since unhallowed came out, people have been calling this band metalcore, or deathcore which is utter bullsh!t.

and the reason why theyve been called so is purely because of the way they look. just because they all dont have long hair, like the swedes, aren't completely littered with tattoos, don't wear gauntlets and bracers and steel-toed leather boots doesnt make them poser mallcore.

trevor doesnt do shitty guttural growls, brees and inhales. shannon lucas is a skilled, genuinely good drummer both live and in the studio (triggers galore, but still good). the guitars, while highly influenced by melodeath, are still somewhat original. there are no chug-chug breakdowns or two-step rhythms. it is purely metal.

deathcore, mallcore, poser scene garbage includes emmure, oceano, impending doom, etc.

NOT THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. get your facts straight, go to the coffeehouse venues if you want to know what fake hot topic music is. theyre popular, so what... it is unfortunate that they dont sell morbid angel or kreator merch at hot topic, but they do sell tbdm and cannibal corpse merch because theyre popular and the kids that shop there will buy it. does that mean you'll group in cannibal corpse with all the other mallcore bands? no.

get it straight. don't bash sh!t you obviously know nothing about.

I am a huge Black Dahlia fan, but I really don't understand the hype for this album.

The songs seem to stay in the same place the entire time. After I've finished listening, I recall very little from it, whereas parts from the previous three albums always get stuck in my head. The album just isn't as catchy and fun to listen to and I find myself bored with it very quickly.

Also, what's up with Trevor's voice? His signature lows are nowhere to be found on this record, replaced with a sort of weak, grunting low-mid and I seem to be the only one to notice. I understand the stress of touring on one's voice is immense but if it was this bad they should have tried to postpone the recording so dude could heal up, because the lows just aren't there anymore and that kind of ruins the fun of a BDM album.

I found this album very disappointing and dull, but not horrible and at least worth a listen.
