I can imagine all of the FEAR FACTORY comparisons THREAT SIGNAL earned with their debut, "Under Reprisal", and the band's subsequent involvement with FF off-shoot ARKAEA must have swerved the Canada-based act away from adopting more of a "factory-friendly" sound on their newest effort. Well, that and the fact that vocalist Jon Howard is the only remaining member that actually played on the album. Regardless, "Vigilance" sees a noticeable shift in direction from THREAT SIGNAL, but one that sees them retaining many of the same elements heard on the debut at the same time.
In a nutshell, "Vigilance" offers less FEAR FACTORY derived cyber-thrash and more of the SOILWORK-inspired elements we heard last time around. That would be all well and good were that aggressive attack that made "Under Reprisal" such a throat-grabber not been replaced with a more formulaic approach. Though solid tunes, much of this disc follows that time honored tradition of following a driving and thrashy verse with a melodic chorus. Stepping into this comfort zone did little more than take what personality THREAT SIGNAL had and stick it on a shelf at your local Hot Topic. Aside from the initial impact of opener "Afterlife", I failed to hear much separation among until the brief acoustic outro on "United We Stand". "Beyond Recognition" threatens to do some damage with its rapid-fire melodeath slant and an ear-catching array of melodic lead work and acoustic guitar during "Another Source Of Light" (and the opening seconds of "Lost") show some skill at the other end of the spectrum, but it's at this point that "Vigilance" starts to lose steam.
Had THREAT SIGNAL trimmed some of the fat off of this release and placed more focus on making the good moments even better, "Vigilance" would have made much more of an overall impact. As it stands, with thirteen very similar tracks, this is album that tends to go back to the well a few too many times. While it does prove THREAT SIGNAL to be a band that can survive the most drastic of roster changes and still deliver a respectable, yet not very memorable, effort. There are a handful of parts here that give me hope for what this line-up can produce once they settle into themselves, they just aren't there yet.

...okay.
Vocally, Jon Howard is a one-trick pony. The music's pretty good, tho.
Rips it! This album shows of his vocal talent way more than the last! Solid, keep it up!

I've heard a lot of new material being produced these days and I see this recent album by THREAT SIGNAL as one of the strongest CDs out there! Of course some of the songs sound similar.. ITS METAL! .. Now, if this was a review of POP music and the songs couldn't be played in elevators or shopping plazas or in your gandmother's car without her ears dropping off .. okay ..fine!.. John Mayer & Taylor Swift can have his diversity...what I want form a SOLID METAL BAND IS SOME BRUTAL ASS KICKING FROM START TO FINISH..... Jon's vocals tear into the soul right when you want it too ..and the band is right there to mash up tour insides with a consistent ..never boring assault.
By far .. my favorite release as of recent days..
STAY UP BOYS!!! .. THREAT SIGNAL KICKS ASS!!

but a little too much filler on this album. The bends and unique rhythms were slightly better on UR, but this album still has some great moments. I wish Jon would mix up the clean vocals a little more and mix in something else with the nasal stuff.

I can't believe how hard the reviews are being. You should not look at this album in shadow of its predecessor. They brought a new element along with being a new lineup has brought much unnecessary criticism. Each member is clearly talented and did their best to be a new band and not copy their first album. They easily could have rode in on their own coat tails. Instead they took the band back to the drawing board and created Vigilence, this is a quality album and has not been punched in your head for 3 years like Under Reprisal. Let Vigelence sink in a little and you will grow to love it. Be nice and listen to it a few times.

Just picked this up today, and I'm liking it a lot so far. It didn't instantly grab me like their debut, but this is still a very solid metal record, and deserves higher than a fucking 6. I will say that I don't think Jon's vocals are as good as they were on the last album either, but still...he sounds really good.
Dude, the first time that i heard VIGILANCE i thought "is this for real?" i mean, it was too way different from the first album and to be honest i didn't like it at all. But, i gave me patience, and started to listening all the songs, and nowadays, i love this CD man, i think that UNDER REPRISAL its agressive, but VIGILANCE is better, it's so well produced. All my friends, here in Brazil, thinks the same as me, so, that's pretty enough to me. (sorry bout the crappy english)
This album really defines this band and sets tham apart from their first release. Musically beautiful and brutal and vocally diverse, and comes together to make an awesome record.
This album can stand on its own without UR. The musicianship is beyond fantastic IMHO. I agree that the album does have to grow on you a little if you've been listening to their first album for the last three years. After several listens, I find it to be a better record than the first. Jon has learn how to control his voice and has taken it to another level. Still love UR though. This is a great live band, go see thiem when they come to your town. They should be touring heavy in 2010. Deserves more than a 6!!

I waited a good 2 years for Vigilance since the announcement, especially after Under Reprisal Blew me away (and became my favourite album of all time). Of course I was alittle worried on how the albm would turn out with an almost completely different lineup, but I have to say that Threat signal STILL sound like Threat signal but with even more under their belt, All the new guys are extremely talented and you can tell by listening to the whole album. I also dont understand why people are complaining and crying because they use more clean singing and acoustic guitars...Under reprisal had acoustic parts too and it adds a great depth to the song and really brings out the atmosphere that these songs hold.
Personally I believe Threat Signal are the Epitome of what Music is all about. You gotta stick attitude and also the the atmosphere and emotion into your music. Give it a meaning. I believe Vigilance has done this on a higher scale that Under reprisal and thats pretty damn high in my book! This album deserves Higher than a 6.
...and if your one of those "oh its not brutal enough, pussy singing in metal ohhhh bloody hell" type people...then you should bell off! grab a stella, Beat your partner around a bit and thrash your dick over cannibal corpse.
