I'm glad Ogle mentioned the hype machine that went with this album, because I had the same feeling before it even came out...Enough about Slayer already! Unfortunately I think some of that jaded attitude rubbed off on me, because I can't find myself giving any of these tracks much listens after hearing them. I guess I've just been spoiled on too much eclectic prog over the years, but after years of Opeth, Slayer just seems like too much of a step backwards.

Can't get over the rather dismal mix, but what lies beneath is still potent and very listenable. More so, than the last few albums. Hand over the raw tracks to a "metal" producer and we'd get a very good Slayer album.

Tom's vocals sound bad ass, drums get lost a bit in the mix, The guitars sound terrible, almost as if they decided to use patch cables that were on the fritz or maybe they forgot to put new batteries in their overdrive pedals. Psychopathy Red is the only song that has the "slayer guitar sound."

I agree with the review on many points. The biggest problem for me is the somewhat flat and dead-sounding production (I prefer the rawer sound of Christ Illusion), but the songwriting on here is great! I hope for it to grow on me even more overtime...

I think the album is to be rated higher than this. I give this one a solid 8. There is ferocity, there is darkness and there's even a modern touch. Americo, I think, is in itself a great tune. The ferocious songs sound very familiar and that is what we want from Slayer, no doubt. But Playing with Dolls and Americon, and the title track too, make this album diverse and that is just the great thing about it all.
Unless Araya decides to become an ascetic catholic monk, this means SLAYER !!!!!!!! are here to stay for at least 5 more years. They are totally essential in today's metal-world.

This is a pretty cool review, I'm glad he said what he said about tacks 2 and 3, I agree they are very 80s slayer, and americon, the reviewer is spot on when saying one of their most uninspired songs. It's certainly the albums low point. at first i was displeased wth how the album opened and closed but it grew on me and although the opening track isnt blistering angel of death like, neither was south of heaven...and well, its something different, and i kicks ass.
It is one of slayers best albums for me, obviously behind reign and hell awaits, but other than those two, i'll have to rethink me slayer album order.
Christ Illusion was good but wasnt the best since seasons cause it wasn't better than Divine intervention, WPB on the other hand...well...!!!

What was once the greatest rock band in America has turned into a bad parody of itself. There was a time when Slayer was able to write SONGS. This time is long gone. There was a time when Dave Lombardo was the greatest drummer in the world. This time seems like an eternity. There also was a time when Slayer albums had dynamics in the mix. This new album is very, very poorly mixed. Borderline amateur. Slayer is getting old and uninspired. Time to quit has arrived.

However it still sounds like my ears caught gonnorea. Just like DM does. If you can't hear the clipping you might consider returning your brain at the hospital and give up your right to spend time among humans.

Everyone has their right to their own opinion.
The problem I have is that I do not consider this to be a matter of perception as much as an obvious fact.
There are many people who do think that the sound on DM is great as well. But it is a proven fact that DM, and now WPB suffer from the Loudness War.
You can say that you like the clipping, but if you say that you don't hear it, then I am sorry for your loss of hearing.

Frankly, it's quite easy to do a better job than Fidelman, because it's pretty hard to do worse.
I can do a beter job with eight times less gear than Mr Greg Clippelman.
I have nothing against a "raw" approcah to mixing but WPB is even a sad effort in that matter. There's no bass frequencies, the mid range is painful to the ears and some songs sound slightly better than other which states how unevenly Greg mixes his shit (Just Ccmpare "Psycopathy Red" with "Unit 731" for example)
I know some songs were not recorded during the same sessions but it's a total shame anyway.
And this obsession to overcompress8/limit the music to the point of digital saturation is pure nonsense when you just need to crank up the volume on your stereo if you want it louder.
I've always wondered how a guy fully equipped with high-end studio gear could fuck up a mix to such a level of mediocrity and then convince legendary bands like Metallica and Slayer that it sounded good.
These guys must be deaf after two decades of touring...
So let me sum it up : WPB is a decent record plagued by a terrible mix.

I think this is a great album and easily trumps over over their more recent output.
Christ Illusion was solid but was too mucy of Slayer (and most importantly Kerry King) on autopilot.
World Painted Blood sounds like they really tried for the first time in a while and it shows. And I don't mind the mix at all. Is kind of a throwback to their early 80's sound if you ask me.

While i will disagree on the actual quality of the music, it's good to hear that some people hanging here do have ears. Yes, this record is painful to listen because so many frequencies have been killed when mastering was done. If heard on a decent stereo system with a good cd player, WPB sounds horrible : No lows, overcompressed high frequencies, drum parts stuck in high medium range. I thought Death magnetic hit an all time low in terms of clipping but WPB hammers it hands down. Greg Fidleman is a deaf idiot and the Slayer guys are clearly suckers for letting him touching this record. Compression is killing music at mass genocide rate. Bands may think that people only listen to music on computers and car MP3 players but it's clearly not the case.

this is the most solid record in years. christ illusion wasnt even in the same ballpark as this one.
like one guy said, when did everyone become sound experts, if you like the music listen to it, if you dont, then fuckin dont.
i personally look forward to every slayer release, no other band give you what slayer does. i also look forward to every song. there was not a single track on here that i didnt like. i agree that WPB wasnt the solid opener you expect from a slayer record. But with the sound of the opener raising til the songs starts is a good way to begin the 40 minutes of hell.
i love it, you should too. what are you gonna do when there are no more bands from the original thrash era that are stil putting out music? those bands are still relleasing killer music. metallica, megadeth, exodus, testament, and now slayer are all still releasing crushing albums. all this new shit sucks, and when the heavy bands from the 80's are gone, the world of metal will suck. so enjoy these bands while they are still here, wont be much longer. hopefully all these bands from my high school days from 20 years ago make more than one more record, and ive heard that there may only be one more slayer record. they need to be the stones of thrash metal. but staying too long could tarnish their legacy, but i doubt it.
fuckin killer record, fuck the haters. i love SLAYER!!!

This is Slayer's best in years. Nothing wrong with the production at all. It's raw and a little sloppy, but it has character, something which a lot of modern Rock/Metal albums are sorely lacking.
King says the same shit every time a new Slayer album comes out, but this time the band have genuinely made the effort. It's both ferocious and versatile, and I'm really looking forward to hearing some of these tracks live.
GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am enjoying tremendously. If you can get past the whole production-sound debate, you will for sure notice a fire that has been lit under Slayer's ass. It is way better than Christ Illusion with melodies varying from 'SOA' and 'SITA' mixed with a punk-sound like 'UA.' Definitely worth a listen!
In regard to the production-sound debate, I just do not understand the uproar. Why? Is it just Fidelman's decisions and not the equipment he used? Maybe those not as musically inclined as the rest of Blabbermouth need a 'Greg Fidelman For Dummies' guide to understand. Maybe he is just a cheap hire. Should be interesting when High on Fire's new cd drops soon because the Fidelman debate will continue I guess.

I bought this album Tuesday and I love it. I'm glad Jeff wrote more songs on this album because I think he is better at writing lyrics and music then Kerry is.
Here's the thing though unless you're a huge fan of Slayer and love to collect all of their stuff, don't buy the deluxe edition. All the dvd has is an animated graphic novel with clips of each song that you can watch on youtube in good quality. Best Buy overcharged me for that shit, cd itself was $10 and the deluxe edition was $18.

about Divine Intervention, I know a lot of people say Seasons was their last solid album, but I really dug Divine Intervention, even though I think Seasons is way better. It had some killer tracks on there like 213, Circle of Beliefs, and Serenity In Murder. I like all Slayer albums too, some not as much as others (Diabolus In Musica, God Hates Us All, and Christ Illusion).
While I thought Christ Illusion was a good album, it was still a disappointment. Dave Lombardo's return wasn't enough to save a record. That's like how people are saying the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake will be amazing just because Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) is Freddy. When the rest of the movie sucks, it doesn't matter. I say this because I've read the leaked script and the dialogue is TERRIBLE and lacks what made the original good.

There are no absolutes in art just perception.
You people moaning about the production? Good for you! Keep moaning, start a petition, blah blah blah, see where it gets you. Ever mastered an album? Ever recorded one? Thought not, go back to guitar hero, thanks for your input.
Sitting in front of your PC messing about with tracks and reading about the science of making a record doesn't make you an authority it just makes you sound like someone who should get out more.

I know you're not referring to me, but I never really looked at the production values just at the songs themselves. For instance a lot of people are saying Death Magnetic is terrible because Lars drum tracks are awful, I just don't see how that would make an album good or bad.
About WPB, I think some songs even have the classic Slayer sound but Tom's vocals just give it the DIM, GHUA, and CI sound.

I downloaded this to check it out while waiting for amazon to ship mine and my download sounded good. However, the actual cd sounds great!!! Dave's drums are insane. The guitars could be up a little on a couple of songs but they aren't muddy. Buy the album and shut the fuck up. This album smokes from beginning to end. I've listened to it over a 100 times now. I really love this album. Simply because it is pure Slayer. This has enough old school feel to it without sounding re-hashed as the small nuances go a long way. These guys have re-discovered their bread and butter as this album is aggressive from start to finish.

Too much moaning about the production here. I'm not an expert on the matter but lots of people listen to the records on computers or mp3 players nowadays, not that it is the best way to judge the quality of the records anyway. I guess the vinyl sounds much better. I got the japanese edition of WPB and the extra track is just a live version of Psycopathy Red. Here in Spain is hard to get de Deluxe edition, I'm wondering about the actual packaging, anyone knows where I cant get some picks of the dx packaging?

"And this obsession to overcompress8/limit the music to the point of digital saturation is pure nonsense when you just need to crank up the volume on your stereo if you want it louder."
Couldn't agree more, but that's just the flavor of the day. Every producer feels the need to overcompress these days. Even the remastered classics are overproduced by nitwits who don't know how to make a solid, balanced mix. If it's really loud, it's okay.

This album composition wise is probably their best since Divine. No doubt that Jeff being back to writing a significant portion of the album has improved things greatly. Dave sounds great, loving the little blastbeats in a few songs.
I'm trying to figure out how they would let their rhythm guitars sound this awful. It sounds like they have their distortion halfway up...eekkk.
Overall, guitar sound not withstanding, this is the first Slayer album I would listen to more than once since Diabolous (God Hates Us and Christ Illusion were dumpster fires).

I thought I hated the sound of this record when I heard the first couple of songs but now I love it, I don't know why, a lot of records these days don't even have "a sound", they just seem mechanical, there is something about this that is just raw and alive, and as for the music itself I think it fucking smokes, the only dud is Americon, "all about the motherfucking oil" ,I get it but saying that is like saying "make love not war" it is just a lazy cliche that is empty and the song itself just plods along BUT the other 10 songs are no bullshit badass Slayer tunes.

The sound on this album is what Slayer has been missing for so many years. It's raw, but not overdriven to buggery. There are a couple of songs where the could have been *slightly* more crunch, but overall, this record is the best sounding the band has done bar Seasons and Reign.
The mix is slightly flat, but it really leaps out in parts. Same as Death Magnetic really. I really, really like the paired pack, clean production that whatshischops does, it's just it needs more of the leaping out.
The songs are... odd in parts. It's certainly different and has the weirder bits of Christ Illusion in droves, but it's all set against a backdrop of Seasons intensity and flat-out old-school riffage. Where most of Christ Illusion and most of God Hates Us All sounded like dot-to-dot 90s Slayer, this album sounds like the band was fucking hungry. Particularly the first half of the album and the very end of it are pretty damn crushing.
All the complaints people had about the band holding Lombardo back on Christ Illusion are forgotten, because he's the king of the castle on World Painted Blood. The kick drums (which sound like kicks, not clicks), pummel along like a rocket and the snare's all over the place. He reduced his kit for this album and that is evident in the much cleverer and more interesting rhythm.
This album has awesome riffs, awesome sound and unbelievable drumming. Everyone sounds on form and on message.
The Slayer album chart looks like this, minus Attitude and Intervention, which I have not listened to and not listened to much, respectively:
Seasons in the Abyss Reign in Blood South of Heaven World Painted Blood Hell Awaits God Hates Us All Diabolus in Musica Show No Mercy Christ Illusion

A lot of talking about this album.A lot of wait also.Tons of bets of how the album will sound and keep the slayer legacy. Their previous album was much better than god hates us all.Which was better than diabolus.Well now,the diabolus cd was different but good.Songs like Point,Bitter Peace,Scrum,Wicked,Desire were pretty sick and kept the interest high.It was a progrees. And they created a sound and attitude that they kept 'till now.God hates us all satisfied us for some brutal hardcore SLAYER.Payback, exile, disciple, god send death...i mean COME OOOON!!!FUCKIN' SLAYER. WORLD PAINTED BLOOD is great from beginning to end.all the songs feet great together and kep the interest high.Snuff, unit 731,Beaty through order....they have this sinister and dark feeling like skeletons of society or seasons in the abyss. Not of this god is also a great song. The basic thing that i can see in this album is that it needs more listens.Really.it's not like "GHUA" which is straight to your face. But its waaaaay better.I think it's a classic.i haven't said this thing since divine intervention. Just think which of the great bands of the 80's like maiden metallica judas priest etc. or even bands from the 90's like hatebreed slipknot the haunted contineously released great albums.Which of these bands 'till now is relevant to today's music.Which of these bands has made an album that can be amongst it's classics. Not just for the sound of the album but for the quality of it's music and their attitude as a band. Blabbermouth rate christ ilussion with 7.0 (number 5 at USA charts and 2 grammy awards) a killer album!!! so i didn't expect to rate this album (WPB) with a 9.0. cuz obviously you rate the albums with a 9.0 or with a 8.0 if the album is in Roadrunner records.... I saw albums rate here with 9.0 and the album was for 6.0 !!! Christ illusion was for 9.0 and WPB for 8.5.

This is the stupidest review I have ever read on a slayer CD.It deserved a 10 easily, but unfortuantely I guess the reviewer really didn't take the time to listen to it.The production is great, and I am soory, but to these ears the guitars sound great also.It is a lot better than Christ Illusion, which I thought had kind of a bad production, but was a step in the right direction to get to the point they are at now.I love every song on here.TO me,and this is just my opinion, this could easily be the modern day Reign In Blood, but like I said, this is just my opinon.I have already read more favorable reviews on other websites on this CD and will stick with those opinions. This reviewer is probably a secret Fall Out Boy fan whao can't give a real band a good review.Like i said, this is a 10 or higher easily, andI ma hooked on it.Hopefullyt their are many more kickass albums to come from the godly SLAYER!

Also, is it just me or is the bass very low in the mix? I am just not feeling it. Love SLAYER, but this one is not going to get that much spin after the weekend. I give it an appropriate 6.

I know 7.5 isn't necessarily that low of a score, but if it's really one of Slayer's "top 5 or 6 albums" then it sure should be higher than that. Fuck, here's 6 records that are all at the very least are 8.5 or better IMO.
Show No Mercy (1983) Hell Awaits (1985) Reign in Blood (1986) South of Heaven (1988) Seasons in the Abyss (1990) Christ Illusion (2006)
After a few listens I would give WPB somewhere in between an 8.5 and a 9.

Catering to an specific audience means "selling out" in my book. People tend to think that because Slayer never turned their amps down they haven't sold out. "Diabolous In Musica" is a horrendous album. 2, maybe 3 songs at the MOST are "sort of" ok. Things picked up slightly on "God Hates Us All". I beg to differ with Ryan here, but "Christ Illusion" was the best Slayer album since maybe "Divine". I know that's not saying much, but it certainly features better arrangements and more interesting songs that "Diabolus" or "God Hates" put together. And now for this new album; I've only heard it once and it sounds like thay have made an effort to make some memorable riffs. There's a sense that thy've tried to emulate the atmosphere of "Seasons In The Abyss", probably the LAST "good" Slayer album. The new album is certainly better than their 90's stuff. All those 7-string, downtuned songs only show that Kerry King was catering the nu-metal crowd. Who's the sell out Kerry? Thankfully, Hannemann wrote more stuff on this album and it goes to show that if he weren't so lazy in writing songs, those mid 90's Slayer albums would've been something worth owning!

I enjoyed this album a lot. Even though its not produced or arranged as well as Megadeth's Endgame, I like World Painted Blood better then Endgame because its a true balls out metal album. Slayer has never let me down over the years and its awesome and amazing to see these guys, who are pushing 50 years old, still playing as fast and with as much energy as they had in the 1980's...they play faster then a lot of the younger metal bands out today and those guys are probably in their 20's. I highly recommend World Painted Blood.

I expected a lot from this album, especially considering Dave Lombardo's enthusiasm for the new recordings.
Dave, I'm sorry to write this, but this album is mediocre - and plagued by a shitty production on top of it.
I'm asking the question for years now: where is ANDY WALLACE?
A huge part of the appeal of Slayer's "holy trinity" (RIB, SOH, SITA), to me, was the transparent, crystal clear production/mix. Andy Wallace made Slayer sound like a precise, razor sharp, surgical unit.
Since the day Lombardo left - and Andy Wallace left - after Seasons In The Abyss, Slayer sound muddy, overcompressed and ultimately sloppy. How can it be possible that albums from 20 years ago sound better than current ones? It's a mark of a timeless work by a masterful producer/mixer/engineer.
And what about Lombardo's other projects? I almost jumped out of my chair when I initially listened to Grip Inc.'s Hostage To Heaven in '94 and Testament's D.N.R. in '99. Amazing songs, amazing albums, amazing sounds. To this day. Infinitely better than newer Slayer.
Although Lombardo puts on another drum clinic here, this new Slayer album leaves me strangely unaffected. Some may like the "punky" production approach of Fidelman and his latest predecessors on a Slayer album, I think it doesn't fit at all.
And part of the problem seems to be the guitar tuning. Slayer sound best in Eb. They should leave it at that IMO. Testament and Eric Peterson still sound great in lower tunings - but Slayer's guitar set ups? Not so much (sorry to the Slipknot fanboys out there who also want rubber band guitar sounds in Slayer).
Plus: Unfortunately Slayer forgot how to write consistent, coherent songs over a span of a whole album. Too much patchwork since Divine Intervention.
I really wish that Dave Lombardo will collaborate with Waldemar Sorychta again in the future. Grip Inc. were so much better than Slayer post Seaons In The Abyss. And so was Testament's The Gathering.
In a nutshell: Slayer need Andy Wallace back and should stick to Eb. Alternatively Dave Lombardo should give Waldemar Sorychta a call.
Slayer - World Painted Blood: 6/10.
Now playing: Grip Inc. - Skin Trade.

It tooke me 3 listens but I really like the new cd. The reviewer makes good points, "World Painted Blood" is a good song but not a great album opener. Songs 2 and 3 sold me on it when i just had it downloaded and didn't know the songs. I think it is much more memoreable than the last and compareable to god hates us all without as many great songs. The first 5 albums still own though. I also agree the guitar work sounds a little uninspired and rushed. This is a very good Slayer cd and if they would have got the guitar tone and production right could have been a classic.

I posted my message before I did read all these entries. A lot of criticism of the production - and rightfully so.
Do some people really, honstly, think this album sounds good? The guitars, the drums, especially the snare?
Please listen to Slayer's Ghosts Of War again, pay attention to Lombardo's extensive rolls in the second half. Now that's a drum sound and a crisp production. Or check out Grip Inc. songs like Curse (Of The Cloth), recorded with analog equipment exclusively, or Testament's Down For Life.
Then go back to this new Slayer album and compare. Hear a difference?
After listening to metal for 25 years now I know a shoddy production and a subpar album when I hear one. Especially disappointing when it's the output of a genre defining band like Slayer with one of metal's pioneering (and one of my favourite) drummers.

An average album from a band on the downhill side of their career. Seriously, how did the band come to the conclusion that such a weak sounding guitar tone was a good idea? There's no weight to any of the guitar tone, or the drums, for that matter. Araya's vocals sound fantastic throughout, however.
At *best* this is a 6/10.

Great album!!..I have been a slayer fan since around 1983, I remember back in the day donating money to rent a warehouse for them to play at because the club they were booked at canceled..I realize Iam probley in the minority here, but I always felt South of Heaven and Seasons were major let downs after Show no mercy, Hell Awaits, and Reign in Blood..Those 3 albums pretty much became the blue print and major inspiration for just about all extreme metal..They lost there aggresion until God Hates Us All ( Thats right, Iam a old school fan that thinks God Hates us All was a return to form)..Christ Illusion was good, but World Painted Blood is gives me that old, violent, scary, satanic, agressive feeling that makes me want to pummel some posers face in like it was 1986!!..Great production, killer drum sound!!..Only bad thing I can say about it is Americon is kind of weak with some silly lyrics..Here is how I would rank it: 1.Reign In Blood 2.Hell Awaits 3.Haunting The Chapel 4.Show no Mercy 5.World Painted Blood 6.South Of Heaven 7.God Hates Us All 8.Christ Illusion 9.Diablos In Musica 10.Seasons In the Abyss 11.Divine Intervention

I am surprised they released it with such disgusting production. The songs kick ass though for sure! Slayer is incredible and these songs are great... but the production... oh... it's embarrassing.

This is a killer CD! Much better than Christ Illusion. Dave Lombardos drums sounds fantsastic! He is definately the drummer in metal today! Psycopathy Red and Unit amongst sevral others stand out. I give the CD a 8.5

I've seen slayer on every tour since SOUTH OF HEAVEN and they've always kicked ass as everbody knows. One thing I've always been surprised by as far as reviews, blogs, comments, whatever is the fact that Paul Bostaph was a far superior drummer then Lombardo and knowbody takes notice of that.Don't get me wrong,I love Dave's playing and he is a stud. There was a time I thought he was the best. But when Paul joined he brought them and that trap-kit style of drumming to another level and I think that's been missing since then.I think nobody would ever want to admit that just because of dave's ledendary status.I do hope i'll dig this cd when i buy it, but I'm also a production snob as well and it's not sounding good from what you people are sayin'

I don't get the complaints about the production, but I do agree that Americon fell flat on its face. Thank god Psychopathy Red came into wake things back up. The thrashy songs on this harken back to Christ Illusion (aside from PR, which is good enough to be on Reign in my opinion), but what makes this album so good are the haunting songs, Human Strain in particular. It's so strange to hear that kind of sound out of Slayer, but I love it and Tom pulls of the vocals perfectly. This was by no means a dissapointment, I'd say the best since Divine Intervention (not much of a God Hates Us All fan, and I think this edges out Christ Illusion).

I thought the sparse production was interesting actually. It gave the album a more punkish vibe to it. I would say this is the best album since 'Seasons'.
I kinda agree with some people that the guitars could use some more power at times but otherwise I am enjoying this CD.
God Hates Us All is the worst Slayer album I think..

The guitar sounds more lika Rage against the machine than how we want Slayer to sound. It's time for Slayer to cut ties with Rick Rubin and anyone associated with him. There's so many brilliant contemporary producers that could do wonders for the band;Andy Classen, Andy Sneap (great production job on the new Megadeth album!), Colin Richardson, Eric Rutan (Cannibal Corpse "Kill" has the thickest guitar sound I have ever heard!), Neil Kernon. So why not chose someone who know their metal?
The songs sound kind of amateurish in the arrangements here and there. The three slow songs, musically all Hanneman composed is the albums worst songs with "Playing with dolls being the most tedious track Slayer have written (with possible exception of the ttrack "wicked"),while "Americon" being one of the better tracks (in stark contrast to Ryan Ogles misguided remarks).
As hinted above the Hanneman tracks, with exception of standout track "psychopathy Red",are really weak, while the King songs;all fast, fare way better. It's quite clear nowadays that when Jeff takes the Slayer drivers seat, as he did with "Diabolus in Musica" Slayer takes a dive quality wise.
Tom Arayas vocals could also do better with someone ordering him to stay the f*** away from the higher ends and concentrate at what he excels in;aggressive rapping.
Dave Lombardo nowadays is but a shadow from his former self -but still a great drummer.

What a retarded post. First off , Dave's drumming is EXCEPTIONAL, FINALLY DOES BLAST BEATS, and HAD AMAZING SNARE, TOM ROLLS throughout the ENTIRE DISC! His drumming is so far superior to that of his former playing (SNM to SIAbyss) that I believe mr. Rimsenforce has never heard their old stuff. The guitar production, somewhat under-distorted (low gain on the distortion, except for solos) is fuzzy, but FINE, and it's clear, just checked it out with head phones last night. No it does not "clip" like death Magnetic. There is not much in terms of what's new, but the cleaner vocal style and vocal melody is a welcomed breath of fresh air, and the structures are good, despite what some of you retards think about them (not just verse/chorus/chorus/verse). It's a solid Slayer album, 8.5/10. so again this is a must buy for all slayer fans, I would HIGHLY recommend this to any of them. PS - buy the fucking album.

oh, and while Paul may be a more well-rounded drummer, there is no way anybody can deny that Dave's drumming handwork is unmatched by paul. Paul has better footwork, but in no way does he compare to Dave when it comes to fills and rolls, not even close!

Dave does blast beats, sure. but so does million others nowadays, and way better. This is not Dave's strength - the emotional drumming and as said;his drum fills are. but even those sound at times clueless. "Hate Worldwide" (at 0:30) or "Human Strain" (at 1:30) are in my opinion examples of incredibly dull playing. And anyone who has seen a bootleg of Slayer anno 1986 knows that his playing then was far more intense than is nowadays.

This is the kind of ball tearing Slayer that I've been missing for years. It had me pumped on first listen like no Slayer album has done since Seasons. Psychopathy Red is the standout for me - at 48 years old, how the hell does Araya pull off that high-screamed verse? Amazing!
Oh, and why the hate for Hate Worldwide? "I'm a goddamn heretic, not a God fearing lunatic" is my favourite lyric right now.

I've had this album for about a week. The writing is there, and the songs seemed strong. However the mix is what ruined it. I listened to WPB and then DM back to back, just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, I'm not. The mix on both records is nearly identical. The drums are overpowering the guitar, I say guitar singular because you can barely tell there is a second guitar(either Kerry's or Jeff's). I'm glad to see other people are noticing the same thing. I agree Fidelman either needs to get a new career or learn how to engineer properly(maybe he could learn from Andy Sneap, or my personal fav Randy Staub).
Even though its a good album the mix ruined it for me.

This is one of Slayer’s strongest releases ever, and I think the reviewer’s gotten it all ass backwards.
I’ll start with the most important factor: the music. While Slayer’s never going to top Reign In Blood, South of Heaven or Seasons, I’d say World Painted Blood is actually the natural successor. While it lacks those albums classic riffs and hooks (although it comes close), it beats out just about every album on song structure. For the first time in a long time, Slayer has produced an album full of some pretty sophisticated song structures – the title track, Beauty Through Order and Playing With Dolls all demonstrate this, but so too does the album’s weak link, Americon.
Now, the performances: Dave’s drumming certainly tops out his work on Christ Illusion (an album that was amazingly overrated; I think reviewers and fans were so glad to have Lombardo back that they gave the album’s sub-par songs a pass). Some of Dave’s fills are just sick. Kerry King and Jeff Haneman turn in some memorable riffs, although, as usual, the solos are weak. But I really think this is Tom’s album. His vocals have progressed so far from Christ Illusion and God Hates Us All, where he simply barked and shouted. And while Slayer’s lyrics will never be put on a shortlist for a Nobel Prize, they certainly set up a nice feel and theme to the album. There’s a definite vibe that flows through this whole album in a way that I haven’t been able to pick up since Seasons.
The production: I’ll keep this short. I think it sounds great. And I say that as someone who can’t listed to Death Magnetic because it’s so damned infuriating. Fidelman did a fine job. It’s clear, and everything has a decent balance to it. I’m no sound engineer, but I know what I like to hear, and WPB sounds great. Guitars sound like they’re sawing through bones, the drums have enough meat behind them, and Tom’s voice is clear yet menacing. Perfect, in my opinion.
As far as the little things, like the album cover: awesome, and such a step up from Christ Illusion, which was retarded, and God Hates Us All, which was just lame. I like some subtlety in my metal, and along with Divine Intervention and Seasons, this is probably my favorite cover (for what it’s worth).
These guys have been churning it out for almost 30 years (!!), and the fact that they could get together and produce an album of this quality simply blows me away. It’s got its flaws, sure. But I’d say the positives of World Painted Blood outshine any of its minor shortcomings.
Fucking Hail Slayer!!
8.5/10

Nicely weighed comments. I agree with you on almost everything. The production is very clear and makes room for everything, but it can be a little uneven and the guitars--although raw--could have used a better set-up somewhere in the chain of events (Amps, mix, etc...).

Why people dislike 'Divine Intervention' is beyond me. It's one of the most brutal abums of all time. The only song here which recalls the scathing thrash of that album is 'Psychopathy Red'. While 'WPB' has its moments I feel Lombardo has regressed to the point of utter uselessness. Bostaph on many levels surpassed what he did on the early albums and by comparison Lombardo now sounds like the thrash version of Keith Moon in 1978, washed up, bloated and powerless.

I'm with you, I think "Divine" has to be ranked up there with "Reign" and "Seasons" (while I think that the REAL overrated Slayer album is South of Heaven). My 2 cents about Lombardo and Bostaph: while incredible on records, Bostaph sometimes felt a little weak live (I saw him with Slayer 4 times), while Lombardo, while surely not in his prime anymore and maybe not up to par with younger and equally talented drummers, has his strength in how he always delivers insipring and solid drumming... i.e. experience.

I also found this album to be, well, not their best effort. The guitars are my main bitch. They just don't beef and chunk like they should. They are too soft sounding and don't carry the bottom end.. But, after a few listens the album starts to take hold. I didn't like it as much as "Christ" at first which had me worried cause I think that album is one of their weakest ever. But as I said after a few spins it took hold and never looked back. This is a solid album but I would say that Megadeth and Metallica had a better return to form that SLAYER in 09. I know that it's wierd to even mention Metallica in the same breath as the other two these days but Death Magnetic fucking killed and I don't hate saying that it's the best of the three by a mile.. Even though this isn't "Reign" or "Seasons" calibur, it's still fucking Slayer doing what they do and that's kick the world's ass!!! I love Slayer and I hope that I get to hear ten more SLayer albums before it's all over....

Its wierd....the production does kinda get to me. I LOVE a good raw recording, and not always the OVERPRODUCED stuff thats everywhere BUT listen to the NEW KREATOR (hordes of chaos) THAT IS A GREAT RAW RECORDED RECORD without too much polishing
My speakers sound like they are distorting sometimes when listening to the new Slayer
....HAVING SAID THAT, i think the material is F'n GREAT. Much more memorable stuff....and possibly their best since DIVINE (oh yea, DIVINE is 1 of slayers best IMO) I'm sure LIVE this new material will be great ITS CERTAINLY a very FAST AND BLUDGEONING ALBUM!!!! I'm not a huge Slayer fan and I never have been. I do believe Reign In Blood is one of the most important thrash metal albums of all time but I could never get into it, trust me I tried. My first Slayer album was Diabolus In Musica I think it is truly amazing, their classic thrash sound with some Sabbath vibe thrown in. Then, I bought South Of Heaven the title track alone shows how they are masters of thrash with the classic Sabbath vibe. To me Slayer albums are very hit and miss some are truly brilliant and others are just flickers. This album to me represents what they do best, extreme thrash with a punk edge and a very strong Sabbath sound weaving in and out of the album. The production to me is amazing, it seems like everything nowadays is ran through a computer numerous times until it looses all its organic nature. The lyrics on the album are a true reflection of how things are today in this world on the edge of destruction or revolution, just listen to Americon. Read the lyrics of Snuff and you will realize how much this album is a portrait of today's society. I have listened to this Cd three times so far and read all the lyrics, it is amazing. Brutal, melodic, thrash and a mirror to this world that seems to be coming apart at the seems. Classic Slayer!!

I wrote a review of this album already but after reading some of the SHIT that some of you are saying about how us as music lovers (and in my case a musician) shouldn't bitch about the production. You all are saying shit like: Since when are you a producer?> Sit down and try it yourself and blah blah blah. Listen up YOU PEOPLE> We have ears. YOu don't need a degree in production to know what sounds good. Screw you cats that think that we as listeners and fans don't have the right to dislike the production. The fact is that the prodution for this album is very THIN and needed to have more bottom end just for a start. And the guitar mix is the worst that I have ever heard out of a SLayer album. On top of that I miss the catchy riffs and hooks that they were always the best at doing. I still love Slayer and will always support them but that doesn't mean that I don't have a few issues with this album and can't voice my opinion on it, so don't tell us that we listeners don't have that right.

Dave has the best fills in metal period. He is a fucking legend for his power and heart. He just fucking flogs!! I will say that I think that Paul never got the love that he deserved. He is fucking awesome and had some mighty big shoes to fill and not only did he fill them but he was even able to put his own spin on Slayer. Some of the best Slayer in my opinion was while Paul was in the band. I am sorry but "God hates us all" was the shit.. That was their best since Seasons and now WPB is their best since GHUA.. "Since the day Lombardo left - and Andy Wallace left - after Seasons In The Abyss, Slayer sound muddy, overcompressed and ultimately sloppy. How can it be possible that albums from 20 years ago sound better than current ones? It's a mark of a timeless work by a masterful producer/mixer/engineer."
I agree. Divine Intervention was a good album, but it took me a week to get used to that muddy sound. But in D.I's at least it was atmospheric, which is more than what can be said for any Slayer album that was released after it.
"And what about Lombardo's other projects? I almost jumped out of my chair when I initially listened to Grip Inc.'s Hostage To Heaven in '94 and Testament's D.N.R. in '99. Amazing songs, amazing albums, amazing sounds. To this day. Infinitely better than newer Slayer."
Grip.Inc were massively underrated. Lombardo's drumming on those albums, as well as some of the jazz and experimental music he has recorded with Patton and Zorn, is superior to his best work in Slayer. 'Solidify' and 'Incorporated' were killer records, and 'Hostage To Heaven' was probably better than anything on D.I, or at very least equal.
New Slayer is quite good. 7.5/10 sounds about right. I enjoyed 'Christ Illusion' and 'God Hates Us All' too, but i seriously doubt they have another classic in them.

Been a Slayer fan since I was 13, I am now 37. I have not gotten "World Painted Blood" yet... I am sure I will at some point. But to be honest after "Christ Illusion" .... I gotta say, I have not been to "reved up" about this new effort buy my old favorite's... I am just not interested. These days I am good for about 4 disc's a month. (sorry kiddies I don't Download) Fact is Slayer has not been on the agenda with epic stuff from Brutal truth, and Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, and Suffocation, Immortal, Behemoth. ...soon...so..forth..

This is by far a great SLAYER release. Can you seriously say it is shitty or even complain about the production? All you assholes out there crying about how SLAYER needs to make another Reign In Blood or Seasons In The Abyss got your fucking wish granted..song writing, production, aggression, and everything minus SLAYER covering their old songs to an exact needle point. This is nothing short of another legendary album and somehow they have even managed to explore new areas of music while also keeping that classic SLAYER sound. Any person who says this isnt good, classic, or anything positive...you are not and never were a true SLAYER fan..your a silly false flagging shit head that never liked this band in the first place. 10 for 10 IMO...close your eyes and think back to the good ole days and you will return there with this album playing without a doubt.

I agree with someone who posted above that Dave's work on the GRIP INC. and Testament Gathering cd was some of his best work. But to who ever said Paul was weaker live in comparision to Dave is way off!I've seen both several times and as much as as I love Dave ,he is not nearly as tight as Paul.Paul is a machine! As far as the comment that states dave has better fills and hand speed that's up to debate but not really!Paul's playing on top is his strengh.Double bass is a givin' everyboby can do it nowadays.Look Dave's a god and i'm not hear to say he's not!Paul just makes them tighter and in the long run that's what people want to hear!

I gave it only one listen so far, and I was not impressed at all. Boring, simple minded lyrics to kick ass drumming was all that I heard. And, of course, with a handle like DeadSkin Mask, I am a huge Slayer fan. As the years go by, my dislike for Kerry King grows. He needs to take a step back and let someone else take a crack at the lyrics. He still comes across as an angry 13 year old.
Maybe this seems so shitty to me because I have been listning to so much Devin Townsend lately. Nothing else compares I guess...

It is amazing how Slayer has kept their edge, retaining their classic sound over two decades while still managing to deliver a brutal offering. As God Hates Us All and Christ Illusion echoed the roar of the blinding Reign In Blood, World Painted Blood falls more in the direction of South Of Heaven or Seasons In The Abyss. The production is pretty good, the drums sound great, as do the vocals. The lyrics are brutal. Slayer has not let up, not one bit. One standout track is Playing With Dolls, and not just because of the intro, this mother goes full tilt mouth-of-hell evil. The biggest surprise is Human Strain. At first listen, I was like "what?", but now, this is one of my favorites, especially the lyrics. This is the one I want to hear live.... MECHANISM OF DEATH !!! World Painted Blood is an complex and varied record. While tracks like Psychopathy Red provide the brain-hammer skull crushing, others such as Beauty Through Order, submerge you in a blood bathed world of despair and debauchery. It's like the nightmares you have running in quicksand... wicked. World Painted Blood is as evil and as brutal as any Slayer fan could want.
...And as a side note... I dig the 4 CD covers!! I have them all!! Great idea, as well as the CD/DVD and pressing vinyl... I have those too!!

Got used to the different sound of guitars. Overall it isn't bad, it's just different. I LOVE the way the classic slayer solos contrast with the low gain riffs, cutting through the dry rhythms like razors.
The tunes are amazing. A lot of classic Slayer, lots of catchy moments. Would love to hear Araya sing more like he does on some songs (ala South of Heaven, Seasons) rather than scream. Dave Lombardo does something new on this album just like he said. He would keep you awake even thru most boring tunes :)
As a Slayer fan for over 20 years I'm very satisfied with this album. It's definitely unique in their discography. It combines classic and raw with modern just in right proportions.

Look, newbie, I'm frequenting this website since its inception in 2000, for almost 10 years now, and I've seen many stupid and smart people come and go. You can believe me that DeadSkin Mask is one of the more knowledgable and level-headed posters around here.
Au contraire, you sound like an adolescent breast-thumping tosser with an inferiority complex who got into thrash/speed metal just a couple of years ago. If that's not the case, it makes me feel even more sorry for you and your silly I'm-more-metal-than-you attitude.
As for the Paul Bostaph vs. Dave Lombardo debate; let's put it this way: Paul was great in Forbidden and I thought he was an amazing fit when he joined Testament after Clemente's departure. His drumming on Testament's Apocalyptic City Live-EP was spot on and I really liked him in that position.
But I think Paul was not such a great fit for Slayer. He tried to outdo his predecessor Lombardo on D.I. and ended up playing sloppy. His double bass parts especially on that album were often times fast, but not tight at all (live and in studio). And the overcompressed production jobs didn't help Slayer either.
Grip Inc.'s Power Of Inner Strength, released around the same time as Divine Intervention, was a MUCH better album in all deparments; songwriting and musicianship, innovation, hooks and production. I've seen them perform that stuff on the Dynamo festival in 1995, with 120.000 people standing behind me - and Lombardo & Co. tore that place apart and IMO blew away more trendy acts like Burn My Eyes-era Machine Head.
Even Kerry King admits Lombardo's natural talent and flow these days. Technically, Lombardo is no Tomas Haake or Bobby Jarzombek, but he is still the most powerful sounding (no triggers needed) straight forward thrash drummer. He has a signature style and totally unique presence behind the kit, is still tight and fast as fuck - check out a current live performance of Silent Scream on youtube...
But Paul Bostaph on the other hand is a great drummer himself. Not that amazing in Slayer, but very good in Testament and on their latest album, which as a whole is the best current effort by any "classic" US thrash metal band. In every way miles ahead of World Painted Blood.
But I'm still looking forward to seeing Slayer live in a couple of weeks (but probably wearing a Grip Inc. shirt).
Next: Katatonia's and especially Devin Townsend's new album. DeadSkin Mask is right, nothing else compares I guess.

I thought I wasn't going to like this album, I mean God Hates Us All didn't stand the test of time and Christ Illusion ( with the expection of 'Jihad') got old in a week. I'm happy to say that World Painted Blood is their freshest sounding album since Divine Intervention. It's also nice to have Hanneman participate more for this album and Araya with the lyrics.
The Good:
A some what nice mix of Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss.
Beauty Before Order is the most "Seasons-ish" sounding tune on the album. Love the evil relax vibe it has.
A big fan of the haunting dark middle section of Human Strain.
Unit 731 and Psychopathy Red is classic Slayer, whlie Snuff would fit nicely on Divine Intervention.
Araya sounds great.
The Bad:
My main problem with the production is the guitar tone. It's too thin not enough meat on it. I don't hear that twin guitar duel from Hanneman and King. It mostly sounds like one guitar for the rhythm playing.
I'm not sure how I feel with Playing With Dolls, due to lead tone it sounds like a watered-down Spill The Blood. I don't hate the song but I'm not sure if I can love it as I do with Spill The Blood.
I think the breakdown in Not Of This God is really stupid and gay. I hate how Kings always has to add in that nu-metal sound into their albums. When will he learn?
Americon is the album's only extremely bad song, very uninspired.
7.5/10, It's a huge improvement over their last three album. Let's hope the improvement continues with their next studio effort.

The slagging Christ Illusion is taking. I thought it was worlds better than God hates us all. GHUA was extremelry cliche and tired in my POV, WPB is OK, but I thought it pailed in comparison to CI. Who cares we have maybe 2 slayer Albums before it's over so enjoy them for what they are. I imagine they are offering what they have even if it is been somewhat of a slow decent since seasons. They should do a Hanneman written album, A kerry written Album and an Araya album and then call it quits.

As for Grip, i thought Power Of Inner Strength was their worst album, bar 3-4 tracks. It's good, but they hadn't really found their groove yet.

Cheers.
Whats with people? I simply offered my opinion on a subject that I am very familiar with (slayer) and this kid calls me out on it! I have no idea who this bottom feeder is, so its not even worth a response.
As far as your comment, I couldn't agree more. I like Bostaph, and he is obviously one hell of a drummer, but for my money I'll take Dave behind the kit in Slayer. Not because of talent or ability, just style, and the way it fits with the overall sound.
With World Painted Blood, like I said above, Dave sounds great. Far better than he did on Christ Illusion, but he's not getting much help. Tom's voice sounded better than I expected, (based on how beat up his vocals have been for the past few tours) but the biggest problems as I see it are that the Lyrics are a complete joke and the guitar work has been taking steps backwards since day one. The trend continues here.
In any event, I will keep taking it for spins until I am more familiar with the material, but for me this was a bit of a let down. Seems like they were trying too hard to replicate Seasons.
But of course, as always, I will be there when they hit my city.

I was disappointed on first listen and thought it was pretty boring. I've listened all they way through seven times now. While it is not as bad as I first thought it was, it's not even close to being a return to form that I expected after putting faith in Lombardo's praise over the past few months.
I think it is the production. They didn't get a sound that does the songs justice. Dump Rubin/Fidelman for the next one. If there is one, I still strongly suspect this is the last Slayer CD.

This album is "Undisputed Attitude" Part II as far as sound goes. I'm no producer, but I know garbage, shitty, raw, St. Anger, lazy, unmixed production when I hear it...and I hear it.
Some of the songs have that classic Slayer riffage and anger which is good...even though the songs that do, have stolen riffs from their older songs.
Dave Lombardo kicks ass on it, although not half as good as he did on TESTAMENT's "The Gathering"
I could write a book on how bad the guitars sound and how uninspiring most of the the riffs are. if I wanted to listen to punk, I'd throw in an Exploited album, I listen to Slayer beause I wanna listen to balls out war-crying thrash. weak. I guess those thousands of dollar custom guitars, signature marshall amps, choice of the best producers, and pick of any equipment in the world reaps terrible results when you are a lazy.
I can't compare it to christ illusion, because i never really listened to it except for Jihad (sucks) eyes of the insane (sucks) and cult (sucks)
I rank it: better than Diabolus in Musica (biggest failure of their career) and somewhat better than GHUA
How can a band write legenday music when they were yaked up, drunk kids, but after 25 years of doing it, they lose it. I partly blame Kerry King's Horrible taste in music (old and new)

For delivering the goods one more time!
I enjoy listening to World Painted Blood since its release. To me, it is the most varied album since Seasons In The Abyss. I really like the production, it's in your face, in the same vein as Undisputed Attitude. It has a bit of everything. It's metal but has a few punk numbers. (punk by Slayer standards) It has fast songs, slower numbers and some real cool melodic tunes and some very groovy riff. Tom's singing is also great. He broadens his vocal range on this album.
My favorite songs are: WPB, Americon, Public Display and Playing With Dolls. I hope they'll those four live, it would interesting.
Hope to see you in Québec soon!

Why is everyone hating on the production and the songcraft. The guitars arent outragously distorted like they have been on the last few albums where they completely overpower everything. The production is very reminiscent of South of Heaven, and everyone hated on that when it first came out cause it wasnt reign in blood. This is a great album deserving of a 9/10. I bet that douchbag critic gave death magnetic a 9/10, loser.

come don`t you see it`s some sort of trend set by metallica to heve a shitty recording lots of mids on the guitars, the guitar sounds like crap ,metallica had the best guitar sound in the bussiness ,i bet if metallica went back to the and justice for all sound the rest would follow ,but the new slayer album sounds half ass to me .

After Christ Illusion, I counted Slayer out. Figured they'd never make a good album again. Wrong...big time wrong.
These songs work best as a whole album. It's best listened to as a whole. There are standout tracks no doubt...the title track, Pscyhopathy Red, Playing with Dolls to name my favorites, but I like to spin this in its entirety.
I think God Hates Us All was superior to this hands down, but I think GHUA was the best Slayer album since Seasons, better than Hell Awaits and most of Show No Mercy. World Painted Blood is no slouch.
The production takes a little getting used to for a Slayer diehard. It lacks those razor sharp, full drum tones and the guitar tone is a little muddy...not as vicious as like...the open notes in Angel of Death. But the production values work over the span of the record.
Bravo to Araya for some insane vocals...Psychopathy Red gets my vote for metal vocal of the last decade! Maybe..maybe not, but he sounds particularly good on this album. Human Strain, Playing with Dolls also kick ass vocally.
Kerry King's songwriting wasn't incredibly unbearably stupid this time around. I mean Christ Illusion was just terrible lyrically. Childish and lazy. Americon is pretty damn stupid but I just consciously forget that Tom is singing words and enjoy the tune without lyrics.
Damn good album. Should satisfy fans.

what's your take on this fidelman guy? Did Slayer choose him, or did Rick effectively 'force' this douche onto them because he has a vested interest in promoting the guy?
Slayer have let on many times that they have little power at A.R, and that Rubin practically finalises everything - including the artwork.

WPB the song at 0:30 is a fucking intro. It's a build, not meant to be intense, and the fact that it is of moderate tempo and intensity leads the listener to believe that one fucking ass-kicking-god-hating slaytanic offering is about to be unleashed. It does not let me down in the least. Human strain at the 1:30 mark is another trasitional moment in a different song. I guess he (dave) could have put more effort into it, but then again it all builds to to what the bridges, and later on the refrain of the chorus. This song was not meant to be another "criminally insane, or necrophobic", it's more down tempo. I'm glad as fuck that they messed around with some different things on this record. This album is pure slayer, no filler, no frills, but lots of surprises that work. Tom's vocals are great, and despite what some dork named Rimsen Force thinks, it's obvious to anybody that has not had a lobotomy in the last 50 years that this is a classic release. The holy trinity of slayer records? I don't know, Seasons sounded like a boring version of south of heaven to me (except for the title track which anybody admits is a classic). I think WPB BLOWS SEASONS AWAY.

Divine intervention was the last of the "real" Slayer albums... No down tuned guitars, no nu-metal shit.
And the last Jeff Hanneman played ryhtym guitar on. After his own wish.. he wanted Kerry to all ryhtym as early as reign blood,(because King is more steady in the ryhtym playing) but Kerry said he wanted Jeff to play aswell on the record.
WPB is cool, but seriously, Greg feldman must die!

I like the songs, as much as I lost any hope in Slayer going back to the South of Heaven days of harmonised riffs and soon, but I can't quite get past the horrible sound.
I can cope with it in the car, where the shitty stereo sort-of makes it acceptable, but in my high-quality hearphones it's impossible to listen to. Like Death Magnetic. If I have one of these songs on shuffle on a Slayer compilation, I have to skip it because it drives me insane.
The guitars are under-distorted. They sound like they are on "crunch" rather than using the best equipment available on the market. So much for KK and his "beast" Marshall.
The Snare sound is too "dark". It should be more open and clear. Lombardo is however amazing on this album.
There is no bass. At all.
What a shame. I have songs I like which I can't listen to because I get furious with the production.

sounds terrible on my ipod earphones, sounds great (this is at 128 kbit on spotify) on a soundblaster 5.1 with a subwoofer sans 2 of the stereo speakers which are missing, as well.
Probably because bass is being boosted heavily.
it fucking kills tho. Snuff is great, I like Beauty thru Order. Loads of interesting fills and melodies. Few rough bits but we've lost that Nu Metal hint.
Fidelman should listen to the mixes in iPod headphones next time, cos you losers only complain otherwise.
I do hear clipping here and there but not nearly as bad as Death Magnetic.

The most diverse Slayer album. Every song is potential single. Lombardo is the best drummer in the world. Not only he's fast, but he has imagination in creating rhythm. Also I like the production because is loud and raw as it true metal should be, not this over produced Dream Theater type of stuff. Didn't expect this good album from Slayer.

Maybe these people should go out an buy the CD instead of ripping it off some crappy website. God Hates Us All was a great album. Their worst?? Yeah right. Disciple is much better than anything off WPB. And God Send Death, New Faith and Threshold and Exile- very underrated.
Why can Andy Wallace in 1990 make Slayer sound 200 times better almost 20 years ago on Seasons? Drums on Seasons sounded and performed amazing.
Drum sound on South is alot better than WPB. It's a decent album. Maybe they should have got Waldemar from Grip Inc. to produce them- thoses albums sounded great, and much better riffs.
Hey Kerry- ever heard the name Andy Sneap?? He's a producer who knows how to produce metal that does'nt sound like muddy garbage.
Any Grip Inc. > WPB and CI.
Only a hot topic teenager would say this is better than Seasons, South or Rein. DUMB TEENAGERS!!

Guys... Kill'em all sounded like shit... every Slayer album until Divine Intervention is far inferior to the production quality of World Painted Blood...
Every Black Sabbath album is inferior to this production xD
I mean, what are you thinking about? IT'S SLAYER! IT'S NOT FUCKIN JAMIE CULLUM!!
I think Rubin and Fidelman are making an awesome job reinventing the sounds of the most memorable Thrash bands of the big 4.
Death Magnetic was quite good, and World Painted Blood is A KILLER ! ! ! !
Best Slayer album since South Of Heaven (yes, Seasons and Divine SOUND LIKE SHIT and are poorly written music wise compared to this)

It's okay. I've been listening to Slayer from the beginning.
I think Tom sounds great and delivers - I think Dave delivers and got a pretty fair shake in the mix.. but holy hell, the guitars.. ack. I have a little 15 watt Marshall practice amp that sounds so much richer and heavier with no effects added.
I like Slayer a little more varied on tempo like Seasons and Reign... the same tempo over the length of an album gets a little stale for me, so, in my OPINION it isn't as moody as I prefer in Slayer. I think overall the songwriting and playing is a 7/10, but I've got to drop a point for the weak guitar sound and castrated feel of the mix.. Slayer has balls on balls and should sound accordingly.
Could we have some more video interviews with Tom? I could watch and listen to that man talk all day.. he rules.

I kinda read some of the comments in passig. Some jackass stated it has some numetal type of riffing in there or some crap. Bottom line people can look at every last , riff, section, fill, arrangement, whatever, but it is the allmighty SLAYER and they have delivered year after, much more so than the big four thrash titans metallica, anthrax and megadeth that fell off,and fell way short over 15 years ago. Have respect people. It fuckin SLAYER!!!!

As much as I love slayer, BUT I wish they would RETIRE, I don't want to see them as sixty year olds playing thrash. If they packed it up with that album and did a fair well tour it would be huge!

THIS IS A GOOD SLAYER RELEASE, NOT AS GOOD AS THE LAST RELESE, BUT GOOD. IT IS SLAYER! OVERALL GREAT THRASH ALBUM, GUITARS WERE A LITTLE FLAT AND BLAND SOUNDING? NOT ENOUGH CRUNCH IN THE GUITAR MIXING. NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS 'SEASONS IN THE ABYSS' (MY ALL TIME FAV SLAYER RELESE), 'SEASONS' IS THE ALBUM BEING COMPARED TOO. NOT CLOSE AT ALL. I BOUGHT THE DVD EDITION AND I LIKE IT. DEFINITELY NOT THE BEST IN '09.

Slayer is cool still I just think those two last albums sucked ass. I hate their down-tuning same fucken solo scales and same chord structhure but if you or any one else likes that then keep liking it dose not mean that I have to follow you or slayer because they invented the genre...
and you are making fun of me because I dont like the new slayer album your are the one crying you little bitch "I'm a slayer fan and I have to hate everyone who dosent like slayer" that's how you sound go back to pre-school and you talk shit about marduk???do you even know anything about them oh let me guess "oh you dont like them"

It's as simple as that. I don't understand why there seems to be so many varied opinions on this album. My only critique is that I wish that the production used on "Psycopathy" was used for the whole album. Highlights for me are WPB, Unit 731, Snuff, Human Strain, Psycopathy Red and Playing With Dolls. It was also great to hear the blast beat on PDOD ala Supremist.

well Hailmarduk, you are right about one thing... my thoughts are oblivious to you. what does that even mean?!?!? I am uncertain, but I am certain that all of your posts about the latest Chickenfoot release do not belong in our conversation about SLAYER!!! quit bringing them up... no one cares if you enjoy masturbating while Satriani and Michael Anthony rim eachother... really... NO ONE CARES... This is about the latest release by the almighty SLAYER, which is a fuckin' stellar Thrash Masterpiece... not some washed up classic rock combo... enough with your lame ass Chickenfoot shit... GIVE IT UP DR DOUCHE!! Kerry King shits all over Satrani!! It is OVER... SLAYER'S WORLD PAINTED BLOOD KICKS ASS AND THAT IS IT. It would own Chickenfoot, but Why would Slayer Want to own it? CHICKEFOOT SUCKS HAILMARDUK.... Shut your crybaby asshole and go home to Michael Anthony... ps. I and my come backs RULE. pps: chickenfoot sucks ppps: world painted blood!!!!

um... Hailmarduk, say, Michael Anthony called.... he said you left your dildo, your autographed Chickenfoot record, a box of klenex, and a bottle of cherry flavored zima at his place... apparently, you tried listening to WORLD PAINTED BLOOD and couldn't handle it... you had to drown your sorrows in Zima while comforting your self in the ass of Michael Anthony while listening to Chickenfoot... HAILMARDUK LOVES CHICKENFOOT..... hahahahahhhahahaha.

Vlad, I agree that Christ Illusion is a brilliant, consise statement with bitchin riffs and stellar playing. As far as World Painted Blood goes, I'm very pleased with this record. It captures Slayer at the peak of their playing ability. It's fun to hear them stretch out as in 'Beauty through Order' and 'Snuff'. Dig it. Also, I love Americon. It rocks. Now, the question is: why does Hailmarduk insist that HELL YEAH (featurning Dimebag's fat brother) is the greatest metal band of all time? Is it because Vinnie was the Michael Anthony of Pantera? Hey Hailmarduk, If World Painted Blood is too scary for you, there's always a little Chickenfoot, hot from the oven. For dessert, you can eat Wolfgang Van Halen's ass. Kerry King took a dump in your mom's shirt (while she was wearing it). SLAYER!!!!!!

for some people on here to bash those of us who complain about the mix. Fuck you all, some of us MIGHT INDEED know what we're talking about in regards to production. Those who are saying 'fuck those who don't like the production' are those who absolutely don't know shit about sound. Fuck you coolero's.
This album has it's moments but Christ Illusion is far better.

Take the penises out of your ears. World Painted Blood's production might not be the finest of the year, it certainly isn't a bad sounding record. I have the mp3's, and the vinyl... both sound great. The production is hands and fists above Divine Intervention. You can always go back to spin your ChickenFoot or Hell Yeah, with their super sweet production. Having Garage Band on your Mac doesn't make you a producer, or a sound expert.

I don't get the hostility towards the sound.
I have a fairly nice stereo, and when I crank WPB, I think it sounds fucking devastating. It hasn't got that God Hates Us All crush... But fuck. It sounds different to all the other shit out there.
Although, listening to it through headphones when I'm supposed to be workin, I can kinda see what some people are saying.
Blast it loud as FUCK, and it does sound amazingly good.

If you don't like this album your probably not playing it loud enough. Maybe too old or too weak. The mixing seems weird at first but the political comments and anti christ notes are full throttle! This is brutal Slayer that if your too sensitive or too dumb to the world around you you won't understand. Slayer keeps metal simple without overplaying or tacky brain dead songs. The album is great! Praises to Kerry fucking King, Jeff goddamn Hanamen, Lord Lombardo and Tom WAR CRY Arraya!

We all know the resume of this band. I think all Slayer cds are great, for the time period they were released and circumstances surrounding each cd. I prefer more of the 80's/early 90's Slayer though. I also felt Christ Illusion was one of the best cds they have put out and had a great production and alot of oomph to the songs. I find the oomph lacking in this release. First of all this is 100% Slayer, don't get me wrong, been listening to them since they first started out and have seen them multiple times live. The solos are fantastic, Lombardo's drummming is off the hook and Araya really sounds great on this release. I also love the atmosphere to some of the songs, like Human Strain. But the producer greg Fidelman makes this a less powerful sounding release than it should be. I don't think he understands metal, or thrash for that matter. I thought the production on Metallica's Death Magnetic last yr was quite decent. Guitars were up front and the drumming was light yrs better sounding than St. Anger. So he did a decent job last yr, but w/Slayer he screwed things up. Now I have excellent stereo equipment, so it has nothing to do w/not listening to this on a good system. Frankly those are usually weak arguments. If it's a good recording it will sound good on anything. First problem on this is the guitar sound is flat and weak. If you listen to Psycopathy Red (great song), the guitars sound amazing, as does the other instruments. Problem is and a very big glaring problem, the producer used the production/mix from this song that was released as a single many months ago. Why they did not mix the other songs this way, I have no idea. It is very glaring when listening to the rest of the cd, that has a different mix. Another problem is Public Display of Dismemberment. Song has blast beats, my brother in law did not know the tune had blasts until I told him to listen more closely, the mix on this song is dreadful. The drum beats are back in the mix and do not come through. A shame, since this is one of the best songs on the cd. I also found some of the riffs just not as good as past releases. But this still is 100% Slayer and better than any of the Bostaph releases, for sure. On a side note, w/these last 2 releases Slayer still won't give credit for death metal for influencing them to use blast beats and I am kind of sick of them constantly bashing death metal bands. Last I checked Nile's latest release and same with Man Must Die had a shoestring production budget compared to this, yet sound light yrs better.
