My experience with death metal "supergroups" this past year has been 50/50: MURDER SQUAD's "Ravenous Murderous" rules, GOD AMONG INSECTS' "World Wide Death" blows. The winning percentage shoots up with BLOODBATH's "Nightmares Made Flesh". But then, did you really expect anything less from Dan Swanö's death metal juggernaut, a band that released the "Breeding Death" EP and "Resurrection through Carnage" to much fanfare?

The lineup has changed; the quality level of the group's classic Swedish death metal sound has not. This time around the vocals are handled by HYPOCRISY's Peter Tägtgren, his growls and screams always convincing and more versatile than Mikael Åkerfeldt (at least in this realm), even though I've got a slight personal preference for the OPETH frontman's style. Swanö has left his kit behind, moving to guitar and making room for new drummer Martin Axenrot (WITCHERY, SATANIC SLAUGHTER).

As for the music, "Nightmares Made Flesh" is of course one for the DISMEMBER and (old) ENTOMBED fans, perhaps the UNLEASHED and GRAVE devotees as well. Like KAAMOS' "Lucifer Rising", it's not that "Nightmares Made Flesh" is cutting edge or even moderately original. It's simply a fine representation of the genre with top-notch songwriting, pitch-black atmosphere, and some absolutely wicked guitar work. The band's higher profile and album's slicker production aside (characteristics that don't sway me one way or the other), I've got to give the nod to "Nightmares Made Flesh" in a neck-and-neck race with "Lucifer Rising" in the songwriting department. The blasting and axe slaughter is above reproach, yet it's the catchy choruses on tracks like album openers "Cancer of the Soul" and "Brave New Hell" (two of the best) that gets me every time. The pace change-ups and arrangement variety (across 12 original tunes, no less) makes the album that much stronger. The sickening slow-to-mid-tempo ooze that is "Eaten" not only serves as the perfect mid-point — providing a break from the breakneck stuff — but I had to chuckle at the lyrics describing one man's life-long desire to be devoured (a real-life case if I remember correctly). Two bonus demo tracks from the "Breeding Death" sessions (featuring Åkerfeldt's lead vocals) are a treat, and the sound quality is strong on both. Nothing here will surprise you. "Nightmares Made Flesh" is just well-written, superbly performed Swedish-style death metal.

why do bands do stupid shit like tacking demo versions of songs we already have to the end of albums? does anyone want to hear a rougher version of a professionally recorded song you already have? and death metal bands should all take note of deicide... 7 albums and none of them are over 32 minutes! keep your shit manageable - no more than 10 songs and never over 35-40 minutes. unless you're dream theater or something, you can't merit writing such a long fucking album!

Hate God Among Insects all you want, but they're not a supergroup. A bunch of talented guys, yeah, but I wouldn't say supergroup. Then again, what am I expecting from a guy who loves an Autopsy cover band and doesn't like a tribute-group with some actual talent. Oh well; not much I can do. I'm over it.

Bloodbath rule.

Peter's vocals are sick, Eaten is the best slow song I've heard in ages. Also love the devastating breakdown in 'Stillborn Saviour'.

Necks will snap at Wacken.

fueldbyfailure...maybe some of us like longer discs. I will admit some CDs go a little too long (ie: Green Carnation), but there's nothing wrong with a disc that's 45 minutes, or longer, of solid music. At least Bloodbath make good songs. It would be different if they sucked, but they don't. I, for one, appreciate longer CDs - more music for the money. I also happen to like bonus tracks - some of us like to have demos even though we already have the finished product. Sorry you don't like what some bands do for their fans - but not everyone dislikes longer discs and extra tracks. If you don't like the extras then just don't listen to them.

I haven't heard this yet, but based on Bloodbath's other two discs I'm sure it won't dissapoint. I'm actually surprised that no posts have commented on the different vocals (the same, worse, better). Peter's got a great voice for Hypocrisy, but with the heaviness of Bloodbath's music does it really fit?

this album is great, gets a 9 from me. i haven't heard their first offerings, so i can't compare to those, but this album has it all. peter's vox are great as is the instrumentation and production. too bad peter didn't stay on board, i think this band could do better than hypocrisy and pain.
this is what metal is all about, heavy, shredding, and pummelling. as far as the extra tracks go, it's filler and a bonus for the long delay for the US release.

This band has been excellent since Breeding Death, which I managed to get for $8 from CDNow, way back when. Since then, each album's only been better. I really wish Peter could have stayed with the group.

This album exceeds the previous Bloodbath efforts, composition-wise, technique-wise and production-wise. Tadtgren's vocals are considerably more dynamic than Akerfeldt's, covering a wider array of tonal attributes... making this one of the few exciting Death Metal releases in the past few years. Cheers to Bloodbath for giving DM (...not Depeche Mode) fans something to look forward to in a seemingly dead genre.

Bloodbath rulez... Swano rulez!

Sorry to rain on your parade guys...but this is waaay overrated imo. If it wasn't for peters cool vocals this album would be pretty damn generic DM. I also don't care for all the lil chugga chugga breakdowns, kinda borders on nu metal. If you wanna hear something worth the hype get PSYCROPTIC or SPAWN OF POSSESSION.

Are these guys actually trying to be funny? I mean, their name, album titles, and album artwork are all incredibly over the top, but so are bands like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. No, what really tipped me off was the lyrics of the song 'Eaten.' "I've had one desire since I was born / To see my body ripped and torn / To see my flesh devoured before my eyes / Only for you , I volunteer as a human sacrifice" and "My one desire, my only wish is to be- EATEN..."

I was actually laughing out loud while listening to this song. The lyrics are very Dethklok-ish. Either the Bloodbath guys are making a clever tongue-in-cheek parody of current death metal lyrics, or they are the lamest and most cliche'd of all the bands out there. Anyone know if these guys are trying to be funny, or if they are actually serious?

THIS IS THE BEST GODDAMNED DEATH METAL I'VE HEARD IN YEARS.. PERIOD!! I love Peter's vocals in this.. He sings with a passion that I haven't heard in a long time in metal and the songs are so fucking catchy that they get stuck in your head all day.. And not to mention the music wich is 3 steps ahead of "Resurrection" which I also loved but not like this one.. Buy it if you love metal period.. Fucking great album..
