You pretty much can't go wrong with Jon Schaffer or Hansi Kürsch. The ICED EARTH guitarist and BLIND GUARDIAN vocalist are masters of their chosen callings, and two of traditional metal's leading lights, so when they get together, the results are bound to be pretty stellar. Schaffer's precision triplets and tasteful riffing, and Kürsch's distinct voice, make DEMONS & WIZARDS something that exists in a rarefied realm far above most "supergroups" and side projects. This is more a summit of metal's elite, a meeting of Valhallan minds, and a distillation of everything that's good about quote-unquote "power metal" into one colossal package.

"Touched By the Crimson King" may have been five years in the making, but it picks up right where the self-titled debut left off. Some of BLIND GUARDIAN's bombast seeps into the ICED EARTH ethos, making for some huge choruses and monumental songs, starting off in fine fashion with the urgent "Crimson King". "Terror Train" lives up to its title with a manic, edgy performance from Kürsch and insistent guitar harmony runs. The band's ballads are equally strong, though "Seize the Day" and the acoustic "Wicked Witch" fail to match up the poignant majesty of the debut's "Fiddler on the Green". "Love's Tragedy Asunder" spotlights some rare fancy bass work, and features a killer midtempo chorus similar to "Tear Down the Wall" from 2000.

Kürsch and Schaffer are so damn good, they even take what sounds like an awful idea on paper — covering a song as ubiquitous as LED ZEPPELIN chestnut "Immigrant Song" — and redeeming themselves quite well with it. I'd still rather have one more original tune on the "plain" version (the usual raft of limited editions with bonus tracks, slipcases, and whatnot on the way), but they do the song justice, and it's a nice capper to the album.

So why "only" an 8? Familiarity, mostly — maybe it's just because these guys make it look so damned easy, but DEMONS & WIZARDS is a formulaic concept, no matter how flawlessly that formula is executed. There are absolutely no surprises here for anyone who's heard the first record, and that alone makes it less than perfect — after all, you can only hear a sound for the first time once, and we've heard this before (especially given Schaffer's workmanlike playing and insistence on sticking to basic riffs that, while leaving all the spotlight for the vocal melodies, can sometimes start sounding samey).

Does that make it less enjoyable? Hell no — "Touched By the Crimson King" is pure talent and class, top-notch musicianship and quality songwriting from two icons from whom we'd expect nothing less. A request, gentlemen — don't make us wait half a decade for the third album… and how about a tour?

Does anyone remmember that bastard annoying kid in Nightmare On Elm Street III? He's wheelchair bound, but in his dream he's dressed up like some crazy wizard and he tries to beat Freddy by acting like the "wizard master". Man that kid sure did my head in... I was glad when Freddy killed him.

Not that that has anything to do with this band whatsoever. The word Wizard just instantly reminded me of that dude. He was a power metal fan gone wrong me thinks.

Can't wait to hear the album. It's what the term 'supergroup' was made for!

Terror Train, Gunslinger, Crimson King, etc. This is a surprisingly weak review for Bergman. I get the feeling he wrote it the same way Schaffer writes his guitar riffs-Just take some basic parts, paste 'em together and repeat them several times.

You wrote: "Sehr gut keith, ich habe einen Ratschlag für dich!!!!!
Weil du bist 'berg' genannt du sollst auf einen Berg gestegen und dich von Spitze hinunter stürzen!"

If you want it to be 100% correct it should look like this:
Sehr gut Keith, ich habe einen Ratschlag für Dich: Weil Du "Berg" genannt wirst, solltest Du auf einen Berg steigen und Dich von der Spitze hinunter stürzen!"

While you might not agree with Keith's reviews, I think that they are pretty good (over all). Then again I'm not too firm when it comes to Power Metal, so I won't judge your opinion. (Who cares if I did anyway)

Stephen King... well a few years ago I had read some of his books/novels... they were ok, but nothing spectacular... but due to lack of time, didn't bother again... (Eye of the Dragon was the crappiest, although Insomnia rocked btw...) they make some ok movies out of them though...

The whole Wizard name really does a disservice to the music when ever cheeseball terms like "wizard", "fairy" and "demon" are used. Because it's really great, well-written shit. Take for instance the Mystic Prophecy track "Calling From Hell". The chorus goes something like..."calling from hell. Demons and wizards surround you". That just completely took me out of the song which is a shame because anything with Gus G. on the axe is fucking KILLER!!!!!

And "Gettysburg" was 13 minutes long for the record. Owens did a good job with what he had on that song but it was obvious that Barlow was the focal point of Iced Earth regardless of how many more songs Schaeffer wrote than he did.

The Gettysburg "trilogy" clocks in around 33 minutes. Its 3 songs, not just one.

As far as the reviews of The Glorious Burden, it was more well reviewed in the USA than from the rest of the world. The majority of "worldly" reviewers could not get it through their head that this was not a patriotic album, but one of history.

Ripper does have a damn impressive voice. Yet he failed to convert most die hard Barlow fans. Just a much different style of singing.

The song writing in Iced Earth has always been mediocre to subpar. The only good songwriting that band ever managed was the Something Wicked trilogy. I don't like Ripper, I don't like Halford, I don't like that style. Barlow is the only Halford clone I enjoyed.

I'm getting more into power metal simply because I'm tired of the shit-ass vocals in most bands. (ie:Cookie Monster vocals, man getting shot in hip vocals, blowing into the microphone vocals, etc, etc.)

I'm not into Iced Earth too much, and haven't heard much Blind Guardian, but I really liked this album.

The album opens like ALL metal albums should, roaring out of the gates (with "Crimson King"). The only reason I give this a 7 is 'cause I prefer more fast songs like the latter, and there are mostly slower (but still good) songs filling the CD.

Highly recommended!!!
