People have been crowning bands as "the next AT THE GATES" almost since the day "Slaughter of the Soul" was released in 1995. Well, at the risk of shutting down the mini-industry that keeps Swedish thrash metal hopefuls striving for the goal, the heirs to that throne have finally been found — in the guise of a bunch of nerdy-looking reformed hardcore kids from suburban Michigan. Yeah, we're as surprised as you are.

"Miasma" is a fucking monster. THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER keep things simple, furious, and metal as all hell, throwing out gobs of busy, nimble-fingered riffing with an almost impossible ease. Drums are crashing and clattering at all times, shifting tempos out from under the riffs and employing plenty of blast beats and that "1-2-3, 1-2-3" AT THE GATES pattern. Vocalist Trevor Strnad has a venomous high vocal and a low death metal bellow which seem to be battling for control of his larynx throughout most of "Miasma", sometimes shifting in mid-line.

Bits of latter-day CARCASS influence pop up here and there (the mid-tempo section of "A Vulgar Picture", "Miscarriage"), threading poisonous guitar melodies amid the otherwise blown-out chaos. Elsewhere, as on "Novelty Crosses", it's all grinding beats and a neverending cascade of riffs, punctuated by impressive, emotive guitar solos and precision breaks. And while THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER don't employ clean vocals or other watered-down tricks, there's an accessibility to their songwriting, a simple hookiness that gives even their most brutal tracks a swing and a memorable verse-chorus-verse familiarity. Not to harp on the classic Earache Records connection too much, but these guys write songs the way CARCASS and NAPALM DEATH did when they turned extreme music on its ear — they know you don't have to sacrifice brutality to write something with personality to it.

Come to think of it, that's what made "Slaughter of the Soul" (and, for that matter, "Reign In Blood") such an instant classic. Nothing that hadn't been done before, just fused with an inescapable urgency, stripped of all excess, and painstakingly crafted so that every note sparks with frantic energy. "Miasma" is the sound of a band confidently moving up to world-class status, thirty-three minutes of intelligent, lethal hellfueled metal precision-tooled to tear your head off.

i really don't understand why BDM gets so much praise. in the process of writing some of the most uninspiring metal ever, they have tried to rip off at the gates and carcass at every possible moment. BDM have made a career out of entertaining hardcore kids who are too scared to listen to real american melodic metal like Arsis.

this is one of the most overrated bands ever.
if you ever get a chance to see em live, don't.

I mean everywhere I look kids are wearing their shirts, fuck man, they've been touring their damn asses off for a years now and recently sold 10,000 copies of Miasma the first week, read the review, listen to the cd, Bergman is dead on this time. Yeah I'm scared off listening to Arsis, wtf, i'm not even hardcore, don't judge a fanbase before you even know it. BDM rock, I'll be seeing them live tuesday....

I downloaded it...listened to it a couple times...didn't have any desire to hear it again..and deleted it. There is just better stuff out there right now (and people keep mentioning Arsis which is one of them). I'll throw out another - the new SUMMON ('Fallen') is blazing and thrashy, my favorite CD of this year so far.

More power to them..they are fast and heavy...but I don't find anything memorable about them.

This CD fucking tosses a crack addicted hooker's salad. This reviewer is a complete idiot, to even compare this to something like SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL, which also, is overrated like shit. The only good song here is "A Vulgar Picture", and just barely. All of these riffs I have heard a million times before by Swedish bands, who flatout have gotten sick of American bands ripping them off and making some money off what they made, and the drums are so monotonous that I want to gouge my fucking eyes out. Don't listen to this idiot, overpaid reviewer and listen to it yourself.

The band is better on CD. I saw them live with Nile, Behemoth and King Diamond and they sucked it up big time. I still don't see what the big fuss is about. They're decent but they're not great and they're definitely nothing near At the Gates.

selling 10,000 copies doesn't make this a great release, having everyone wear their shirt doesn't mean they're a good band, thats a terrible argument. slipknot sell a lot of albums, and every kid who shops at hot topic has their shirt, but they suck major donkey balls. i used to be a huge hardcore fan, i bought their first cd and thought it was great, but once i started listening to a lot more metal i suddenly realized that BDM is one of the most boring and overrated bands today. everything on unhallowed and miasma is run of the mill. perhaps its you who needs to learn more about metal and its fanbase before you tell me that this is a great release.

I was being sarcastic you idiot. I listen to lots of metal that's more complex and insane (The Berzerker, Origin, Beneath the Massacre, Necrophagist, etc.) than BDM. I like all types of metal, I just think BDM is a good, solid, enjoyable metal band that puts on a good live show. I mentioned the 10,000 because...look at how many people inhabit this earth, 10,000.... that's not really that man, so I can't see how they are so very overrated. I for one, was never a huge hardcore fan, I started off on Sabbath and Maiden and moved my way to Slayer and Pantera and from there got into everything else, I just think it's so stupid to harp on how terrible a band is when their are sooooooooooo many bands worse than BDM, yes there are better, but damn people don't shove Arsis and all these other bands down my throat that you think I don't know, I know all these bands people mention, it doesn't change that fact that I like BDM as musicians, songwriters and people. The overrated thing gets to me, hell people have been calling Mastodon and Trivium overrated, I mean c'mon barely anyone outside of a handful of metal heads stewn across the country know of these bands, well that's enough of my rant.

When are people going to realize that every band that plays any kind of music be it metal or rap or country or any kind of music will always have some kind of influence that they get their sound from. The only way you can say they are ripping off at the gates or carcass or whoever is if they go onstage and play the whole heartwork album or swansong or slaughter of the soul in it's entirety. To all the people on here slagging bands and talking shit, have you been crammed in a van touring your ass off? Have you been writing groundbreaking music that doesn't suck and people are actually listening to and caring about? Chances are you're not and thus your not in the position to start writing bullshit about bands. Honestly get a life. A bands music may not be your thing, but chances are they are better artists than you and are doing a hell of a lot more with there lives than you are, so shut up, go home and keep practicing.

I'm not a huge fan of BDM, but they are good at what they do and they put on a good live show, so I'll give them credit and kudos for all that. I will not however sit here and talk shit about them when they certainly aren't deserving of it.

You're an idiot, seriously. Who says you have to walk a mile in a man's shoes before you can judge him?

The entire point of this posting system is for people like me, who sit at home, buy the records and listen to them, to have their 2 cents about the band out on here. It doesn't matter that I haven't had to tour in a bus with 3 sweaty men for months, what matters is I paid money for their record and I want to bring about my opinion on whether that money was well spent.

Now, I've only really gotten into 'extreme' metal (and fuck off if you're going to start debating whether BDM are extreme) within the last 4 years or so, and some of it I consider good, even if most of the time I can't stand the vocals (Arch Enemy). I've listened to a lot of the At the Gates, The Haunted etc stuff but BDM seems just like a template modelled on ATG and Slayer's Reign in Blood, without any of the decency of the mentioned bands.

It's just noise to me, even if I'm in a pissed off mood, I'd rather be able to groove a bit to the music Pantera style. Screaming and shouting for half an hour does not good constitute music for me, especially not when I shelled out £13.99 for it over here (About 20-22 bucks).

Say what you will, but these type of bands plain annoy me. I gave it a 4.

Miasma on the other hand, some people say that it doesn't add up to Unhallowed. Miasma doesn't surpass Unhallowed, but I think it's damn well even with it. Miasma fallows Unhallowed with just as discusting lyrics, guitar that still taunts us musicians, and drums that make up the band's true sound.

I love how the singer switches his voice like some of our favorite DM bands like CC and the lyrics were kind of interesting and funny to me at least dont ask why I hate death metal lyrics but I always laugh at them. I really enjoyed the guitar work in here it was really heavy but had a nice melodic rhyme on some parts. The drummer was alright but I hate that constant double bass it just gets boring. Other then that its an alright album to listen and I wouldnt really pass it up if your really into this type of music.

Great album, but i'd have to say their new album 'Nocturnal' could beat this album down anyday.

Nocturnal is INSANE but Miasma still owns. TBDM are not to be messed with. 10

Ok I just went and checked out Arsis because of whats being said about them here. I was thinking 'ok nothing exciting here, maybe it'll break out into a cool riff' then a riff came on that sounded like some new age trivium shit haha and then there was a riff in which I'm pretty sure the guitarists just ran their fingers up and down the neck with no sense of rythym or melody. Oh and TBDM are substantially heavier than Arsis, and more catchy...and better.
'real american melodic metal like Arsis'
bollocks mate..........pure bollocks, from what I can make of it Arsis are like Necrophagist, but nowhere near as good.
I also don't see how TBDM are overated, I don't think they get much coverage and all that they do, they deserve.
These guys are the way forward, and if anyone has any bands they can recommend that would be much appreciated cos I can't find a band that hits as much buttons as The Black Dahlia Murder.

this band / album sounds like a (barely) updated version of mid 90s swedish death, most notably at the gates. only less good, obviously.
