When Kai Hansen left HELLOWEEN way back when, he took a large portion of that band's eccentricity with him, put to great use in GAMMA RAY. The band's core has always been the European style of power metal that Hansen helped found, but GAMMA RAY has always been willing to indulge a gloriously ludicrous streak. QUEEN-inspired vocal breakdowns, AOR tendencies, maudlin balladeering, and a willingness to come across as frivolous or even silly — GAMMA RAY's best moments have been when they're the least like the now-glutted racks of pretenders and former members that have risen in their wake over the last decade-plus.

That's why a song like "Hell Is Thy Home" is mildly frustrating, and strangely unsatisfying. Hansen has proven that he can write this sort of grade-B power metal anthem in his sleep since some of you were eating strained peas. It's well-executed and pushes all the right buttons — the twin-leads at the 3:30 mark are nice, as is the chord change at 4:15 before the finale — but it's devoid of personality. It could be track six on a forgotten album from any number of gaudy-looking Limb Music third-stringers.

Thankfully, not all of "Majestic" suffers this fate. "Blood Religion" bites a lot of its groove and vibe from THIN LIZZY's "Emerald" (after an awesomely bombastic intro), but it's the kind of song no generic Sascha Paeth-produced clones would even think to come up with. More importantly, it's the kind of song whose enthusiasm and exuberance will have your flagon of mead hoisted into the air before you know it — GAMMA RAY at their best just drip with charisma, injecting a sense of fun into a style that generally stops being likable about two seconds after deciding to take itself too seriously.

Elsewhere, "Strange World" is a midtempo rocker that would do PRETTY MAIDS proud, and then it unexpectedly veers into a thrashy and intricate bridge. "Condemned to Hell" will ignite message board shitstorms, with its distorted bass sound and pinch harmonics — shades of when JUDAS PRIEST supposedly went nu-metal with Ripper. But once it gets that out of its system, it morphs into yet another workmanlike exercise. "Majesty" is an epic with some of that "Kashmir" vibe in the verses, and a midsection with some awesome soloing and a '70s feel. This, "Strange World" and "Blood Religion" by themselves make the album worth picking up.

To most of the world, it's all academic, and "Majestic" will blur into one candy-coated blosh with PRIMAL FEAR, IRON SAVIOR, HAMMERFALL and the rest of the European children of HELLOWEEN and ACCEPT whose arena-rocking prowess seem largely lost in translation outside of Germany and Japan. But GAMMA RAY — at their best — are living proof that there is life left in the form, and that a modicum of individuality combined with good songwriting and old-fashioned enthusiasm will always make for compelling listening. "Majestic" is all the more frustrating for its strong tracks, because they serve to highlight the places where Hansen and Company are coasting. A 7, but barely.

Obviously, a review written by someone who is not quite familiar with the works of the band he is writing about, but that's nothing new to Blabbermouth anyway. "Majestic" is a great album and one of the best that Hansen & Co. have ever crafted.

Quiet frankly, I don't like this album. Kai Hansen isn't too funny when it comes to guitar playing anymore. The album is maybe a tad overproduced aswell? Pretty flat sound I'd say...

Anyway - Gamma Ray is Gamma Ray and Kai Hansen is Kai Hansen. I'll give this album a couple of more listening hours. It IS worth a 7/10.

The album is worth AT LEAST a 9, given the complexity of the songwriting and the techical skill the guys show. It is a very diverse record and still it features all the trademarks of the Gamma Ray sound. There is nothing a fan of the band should be displeased about here.

Damn this is one of the best Power Metal albums I've ever heard. Certainly nothing new for Mrs. Hansen and Co. Gamma Ray continue in the same direction just like their previous albums. However, it's still interesting and kinda exciting hear this great piece of German Metal. Guys give it a try...

I agree with the majority of the comments in this thread... Gamma Ray are a breath of fresh air in a time when most metal openly embrace modern influences. This may not hold a candle to KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS PARTS I and II but it's certainly worth checking out, and definitely worth supporting.

Eh, he knows who Primal Fear and Pretty Maids are so I'd say that Keith is knowledgeable enough on the subject although he could stand to learn more on the genre but that's just me. Sometimes a comparison is the best way for me anyway to find out if I like the music or not.

In any case 8/10 for the bit of the new Gamma Ray that I've heard from time to time on Hardradio.

After reading your posting. I checked out your website.

I can't agree more that Crowbar should have consideration for Album of the Year. That CD is a Masterpiece.

But correct me if I'm wrong. Your website doesn’t review the music but gives your personal opinion of what YOUR listening to.

I'm very selective to reviews because it's hard to separate a review and a opion.

All I got from your site was a lousy opinion.

If you listed certain credentials on your website your reviews may have more justification.

His reviews are usually pretty damn good, and are almost always entertaining. Fuck Off People! It's a review nothing more - nothing less. If you know you like Gamma Ray - then check out the cd. If you're new to power metal or have never heard them the review would be a pretty good warning not to blow twenty bucks on a cd.

He knows his metal, and his reviews are very knowledgeable. Like someone else said a 7 of 10 (even barely) isn't so bad. Some of you make it out like he slandered Gamma Ray. He also didn't say they were nu-metal. He compared a single part of a song to some of the lackluster Ripper-fronted Judas Priest.

Someone is still bitter about Nuclear ASS getting a bad review.

oh yeah, Gamma Ray kicks ass.

Good album, not as good as No World Order or Powerplant, but still solid.

Oh and Molotov, destroy and erase your Meshuggah albums. Every single Meshuggah and shitty metalcore album album you own. You MUST obey this order, you have no options. Then do the world a favor and commit suicide.

I have been a huge GR fan since "H4T" came out, and am "metal" enough to hate 99.9% of nu-metal. But as such I can tell you that Keith is being fair here, and if you assume he's some mallcore kid because of his assessment you are being that stereotypical metalhead knuckle-dragger. Not having heard "Majestic" yet, I don't imagine he's really off-mark. I'll bet it's solid but with relatively few "eccentric" moments, which as he states are really what puts this band head and shoulders over many of their imitators.

I'll agree with the incendiary Kull here in that "NWO!" did seem like they were coasting to me, if for no other reason than Dan's songs were very typical power metal anthems ("Dethrone Tyranny," "Damn the Machine") while Kai's own compositions drew more heavily on his early '70s hard rock influences than usual (see "Fire Below" or bonus track "Trouble"). He still embraces the sound he helped create, but by regressing to his early influences (again, I imagine Keith's Lizzy reference about the new one is apropos), Hansen really showed his age. Not a bad thing, but not very adventurous.

I think Dirk should write more, especially if they're going to try heavier/modern songwriting here and there (I'm assuming the nu-metally song Keith describes is akin to Helloween's "The Dark Ride" and not hed p.e. or some shit). He's proven he can do that sort of thing well in the past ("Your Torn Is Over," "The Landing," "Hand of Fate," etc.).

And, oh, what I wouldn't do for a new GR song like "Money," "Rich and Famous," "Future Madhouse," "Heal Me," "Salvation's Calling," "Lost In the Future" or "Armageddon"... as Mr. Bergman said in his Deceased review, we need to celebrate our iconoclasts while we still have them.

...you give an album a 7, a fairly positive review, and they pounce on you for not being positive enough.

Powerplant and NWO made me give up on this band. Nothing I've heard about this album - neither the moderately pleased overall buzz one hears, nor the expected, automatic pants-gasming of the fanboys - has yet suggested that giving them another chance would be a good idea.

Keiths an idiot. whew had to say that. All the bands that he tried to compare gamma ray to, I have never heard of. Queen sounding like Kai Hansen. What a retarded point. Majestic is in line, right up there with Walls of Jericho, one of the early albums released by Helloween. Keith should look that up.

worst song on majestic
Majesty a good song, LMFAO. Majesty was the worst song on that album. Definitely not power metal, and not representative of the album.

best song on majestic
The track Revelations kicks ass, the highlight of the majestic album. By far the best album of the year.

Some other points to clear up
King for A thousand Years from Keeper part 3 is also really good to the dismay of some of the ignorant posts here. I also liked the Mrs. God album.

To the person that doesn't like NWO, then maybe skip this album. Majestic continues on from NWO and is sped up a bit too.

Again to reiterate: album most similar to Majestic --> Walls of Jericho by Helloween.

I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan of Gamma Ray and Helloween and will surely buy the album but I am willing to bet that I will listen to it a few times and probably consider it a 7/10 at best.

Lets face it, Gamma Ray will not write another Somewhere out in Space, I don't mind and I will enjoy the album just the same.
