Better known outside his native Sweden as the leader of acclaimed metal act HYPOCRISY, Peter Tagtgren achieved much success back home with PAIN's last studio offering, 1999's Rebirth, which produced one gold single (“Suicide Machine”) and established the multi-talented musician/producer as metal visionary of sorts. His latest release, the group's third, sees the songwriter expanding upon the pseudo-industrial direction established on the last CD with the addition of bigger choruses and more ambitious arrangements, as particularly evident in album closer “Fade Away”, complete with orchestral sections and a less frantic overall feel than has been the case in the past.

Although Tagtgren has always had a knack for coming up with relatively catchy sing-along choruses, his songwriting has never quite veered into the pop territory, with much of PAIN's material alternating between the more up-tempo bouncy numbers and the more experimental, restrained-sounding cuts, none of which are necessarily tailor-made for MTV or commercial radio. Consequently, it isn't entirely surprising to see that the latest addition to this album's final sequence, “Just Hate Me”, marks a collaboration with mega-producer Max Martin (aka Martin Sandberg—i.e. BRITNEY SPEARS, BACKSTREET BOYS, CELINE DION) and Per Aldeheim (i.e. DEF LEPPARD, LAMBRETTA) on what is easily the most radio-friendly number PAIN has ever been associated with, featuring an instantly-memorable chorus and a thick, laid-back groove that is all but certain to make a huge commercial splash in the singer's home country.

A less guitar-driven release than its predecessor, Nothing Remains The Same is not without its flaws, and one gets the feeling that Tagtgren could benefit from a close alliance with a top-notch rock producer next time around in order to add a fresh dimension to what is becoming a somewhat predictable production style. Despite this, Nothing Remains The Same is another fine addition to Peter's impressive resume, and it is one that will likely be looked upon as one of the stronger releases of the year.

Well, well, if it isn't the utterly useless BEELZEBUB. Dude, do you ever have anything informed and / or intelligent to say? If so, then start saying it!

Peter is amazing. His work with Hypocrisy is just amazing, and I am a hardcore Pain fan, through-and-through.

I could care less who he collaborates with, as long as the finished product is a good listen. I mean, it's not like Peter is going to be singing some sappy pop-tripe written by Dido. So he got a pop producer to help him, so fucking what!? Judge the music, not the musician.

Want proof of Peter's great collaborative talents, find the cover of "Country Girl" that he and Dan Swanö did--it's incredible.

Christ is Peter some sort of demi-god or what? The new Hypocrisy is just great and no its not gay well maybe its gay if you enjoy a band putting out the same cd every time and not growing in sound what so ever. I only got yo hear samples of the new pain cd and granted it may sound much like the last one its still a great album. If you want to bad mouth Peter then throw away pretty much half of your black metal albums(Dimmu Borgir, Absurd, Dark Funeral, the list goes on and on) since they guy has pretty much been linked to the above bands most landmark albums. As Peter himself said, "[he] had nothing to do with the bands' success--[he] just did his job". Credit Dimmu Borgir for their success, not their producer.

That said, Peter fucking rocks. And for the record, The Abyss Studios is not closing he's just closing it to the public and will only be doing production for bands he personally selects.

The interview will be posted at AntiMTV.

If "a producer is a producer", I'll assume that you're implying that it doesn't matter who is twidling the knobs. I'd argue with you there, just check out Krisiun's latest, "Ageless Venomous", to hear a producer totally kill an album.

Spears producer, so fucking what, in the end the album is fucking good, and who knows maybe Britney will start liking metal if shet gets her hands on the cd!!! just imagine, her talking about Pain from the same person who brought us the mighty hypocrisy, the blasphemous abbys, the countless amount of bands that he's produced!!! Hands down one of the best personalities in metal history!!!!! do you argue with me?

catch 22 isnt hypocrisy's best. (osculum is), but its good. i cant fathom why you fuckers hate bands changing their style. catch 22 is a formation of old hypocrisy & pain, which is a great combination. although id like the two to remain seperate, if this is the direction both bands are going - it's more than welcome on my part. to date, i dont believe i ever disliked something peter tagtgren wrote. the man has a knack for songwriting abilities.

knowing that you nerds hate it, make it a hell of a lot more enjoyable for people like myself to listen to. people with no mind also have no taste. grow up bitches

Truly Sir Peter Tagtren is the future of metal.
Fuck all of you whinning shit-heads. What do you do
in this scene? Are you making any records/albums? I bet
you are the type of person who always got kicked
out of bands because you were simply to gay to play
metal and rather wanted to be in a Village People cover
band who too kicked you out because of your gayness.

So I suggest you little fucks out there to relax and let your
vibrators in your ass tickle your fancy and let the gods of metal
do their mayhem.

This album is very much like Peter's "Katatonia" side band. Very good lyrics for the subject he chooses to express himself on. Personal struggle, which he expresses it very clearly...and painfully. For those who haven't experienced, understood or lived the perspectives of the life he is portraying, it's probably a thoughtless rejection but mostly people will put this album down by still being "inside the box". I pity them.

The album gets a 10 out of 10, it's a masterpiece when you listen it in that certain mood.
