BODY COUNT came along at an advantageous time (for them) in rock culture. Not only had hip-hop started becoming mainstream, but the so-called "alternative revolution" had just started overcompensating for years of rock and roll's dominance by white males. Labels and journalists bent over backwards to give extra credence to women and minorities in rock — an admirable idea on paper, and one that may have helped even the playing field a little bit.

But it also gave a lot of credit to a lot of crap. There were bands getting tons of exposure playing music which, if it'd been performed by dorky white dudes from Encino, would have been rightfully delegated to demo status. BODY COUNT's 1992 debut scored big thanks to the controversy over the song "Cop Killer", but was a barely-competent joke of an album, with bad riffing and threadbare metal stereotypes. "Born Dead" and "Violent Demise: The Last Days" were even worse, and no one cared when the band disintegrated and frontman Ice-T (who hasn't even been able to put together a respectable rap record in years) made his way to television for a successful run on "Law and Order: SVU".

A BODY COUNT reunion, then, makes about as much sense as a pedophile convention at a Boy Scout camp. Sure, it's mildly funny, for about three minutes, to listen to a 48-year-old Ice-T ranting about running the streets and yowling off-key about terrorism, girlfriends, and stalking hot chicks. But even if the band could write a song to save its life — which it can't — Ernie C's guitar tone is nothing short of embarrassing, bar riffs crackling through demo-grade fuzz buried in the back of a mix that cranks up every canned drum sound and every overblown nugget of wisdom from Ice.

Put simply, there is nothing redeeming about "Murder 4 Hire". Nothing. The songs are stupid, the lyrics are awful (save for one surprising stanza in "The End Game", which alone saves this piece of shit from getting a flat-out zero), the sound is astonishingly bad, the booklet is riddled with typos, the cover art is ugly. The whole project just exudes this aura of cheap don't-give-a-shittedness, pandering to depths of character that would shame the INSANE CLOWN POSSE. It's almost awesome, in a watching-a-car-wreck kind of way, that music this bad can still get released and nationally distributed, but I guess that's star power for you.

Download, listen, laugh, and delete.

I agree Born Dead was total shit and not every song on the debut was great but fuck Violent Demise was and still is one of best albums to have come out that year by a metal band. Listen to the track Strippers and tell me that it isn't one of the greatest rock/metal songs written in a long time!!! Ernie C can play his ass off and sure as the hell can write some kick ass songs. I wasn't that impressed with the 2 demo tracks I heard for this album but still for it to get a flat out zero or negative rating is a fucking joke. Especially when half the albums that get 8's or 10's aren't worth a shit.

the first Body Count wasn't all that great. it sounded alright but in 92, but that was due to a number of extraneous factors, little of which had to do with the actual music itself. the follow-ups were terrible--esp 'Born Dead'--so i have no trouble believing this is a pile of shit.

Ice-T has great taste in metal, and nobody can deny the impact he had on popular culture during his prime---the man was literally everywhere, and there hasn't been anything like him in the genre since. he came from a time when rap actually stood for something, and he spoke out against the injustices in the american legal and political system in a way that was--for the most part--truly meaningful. But those days are long gone. And Body Count should have never reformed.

That's the thing though, Fishbone DID get massive press and critical acclaim, far out of proportion to their actual popularity or record sales. They also got a big boost from the old, inaccurate Billboard chart reporting (pre-soundscan). The first week soundscan was implemented, their current album (I think it was "Give a Monkey a Brain...") dropped from the top 50 to number 170 or something.

Not that they weren't a great band at their prime, but they actually kind of prove the point.

Time is quite forgiving. When the 1st BC album came out it went over like a fart in church. That was even with them coming off the 1st Lollapaloza. Then the Cop Killer debacle happens and it blows up. It was not a good CD, Neighborhood and Evil Dick were good songs but 2 out of 10 is not a good ratio. Ernie C is a bad guitar player very unoriginal. The fact that Iommi thought it was a good idea to have him produce a Sabbath CD with a guest apparence by Ice-T is proof that there is a Satan. Rating a CD with numbers is subjective and causes unfair comparisions. This should be in the "You must have too much money and your parents are still frightened of their kids buying CD's of black artists for you to buy this steaming pile of crap." But that' just me.

And clearly, judging by the fact you bring up Keith's name at EVERY POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY, even when it's wildly off-topic, you've got some unresolved issues. Sigmund Freud would have a field day with you.

Ice-T is cool and all, but maybe he should of stuck to rap, or collaborated with an existing metal band, a la Public Enemy and Anthrax.

I have to say, the 3 songs i heard off this i actually liked, and so it's probably a 10...and all the racist slayerphiles might want to remember that they covered Exploited's Disorder/War/Uk 82 (dubbed LA 92) on the Judgment Night soundtrack...so there's your metal cred if you need any...

these debates on here always crack me up. yes, the europeans have contributed a lot of things to the world---art, high culture etc---and the american contributions are mostly limited to business/economics. But it is one thing to accuse Americans of being stupid, shallow, 'trailer trash', and another thing altogether to get on your moral high horse.

the average European may be more educated than what the average american is, but trust me, i've been, and lived in many European countries(italy, Greece etc etc) and i've lived in American as well, and Europeans are mostly just shit talkers. they watch the same movies as Americans do, watch the same television shows pretty much, they absorb so much american culture nowadays, and then have the absolute fucking cheek to act like they are so far above it. all their pseudo-intellectual posturing amounts to nothing more than pure hypocritical B.S. the only thing they have over americans is fashion. the average italy/greek/french person etc dresses better. wow. you do everything Americans do AND on top of this, you dress better too. how do you manage it? such a delicate balancing act isn't it!

And i'll tell u something, i'd much rather live in the U.S than any of the european countries i either lived in or visited i can tell u that much. i'm not 100% crazy about the U.S either. you are definitely wrong about the education system standards i think. most europeans that study in American do significantly better than what they did in their own countries. they can't drop subjects like americans do(they don't have many 'electives' as such, as their education system isn't nearly as flexible), so basically if you aren't good at something, tough. you have to deal with it. i think the average yank wouldn't be able to handle the workload personally. But that's a different story altogether. as for your other comments:

"Most of the best art, culture and fashion these days has switched over these days to many parts of America, London and Asia. Europe has been left in the dust on all, perhaps besides some parts of Britain."

with fashion you are definitely wrong i think. there aren't as many famous U.S designers as there are in Europe. i'm willing to agree with the rest though. U.S fashion is DEFINITELY copied from Europe. in fact, the 'rich' in America see it as a badge of pride to get around in the latest european fashions, or cars even. it has been that way for a long time. it isn't the other way round.

"You are right to say that the euros act so 'American' in almost every damn aspect of their lives, while they try to denounce American culture and lifestyle in the same breath. Everywhere I went, people were watching American TV shows and movies, while copying every damn trend when it comes to American brands and fashion styles. So damn funny, yet so damn true. Most of it comes from jealously and envy, since they want the same, but can never have it, since their countries can't give them the chance to be free, innovative, creative and prosperous. A few areas in the UK can be one of the only exceptions."

sometimes it comes from jealously and envy, but there is a certain amount of resistance to the increasing presence of U.S culture over there too. it goes both ways. as far as them having less 'freedom' and 'opportunities' when it comes to business/money making ventures etc, that is definitely true, but many countries are in the process of eliminating the obstructive 'red tape' which has stalled their economies. who knows what might happen in the future? perhaps not with this generation, but maybe in the next one or two, things might change greatly. maybe they will being 'innovative' and the u.s will be left behind. it's a long shot, but stranger things have happened :-)

keep in mind that a lot of european countries have done well with a limited private sector. the elimitation of 'red tape' will change the way their economies run. And the Italian economy has a pretty high GDP really esp when you take that into comparison. the last time i checked, counties like Switzerland, norway etc have a higher GDP per capita than the U.S. maybe they don't have the same 'opportunities', but the wealth is distributed more evenly.

interesting article. i know that in Greece they are trying to privatize many of the universities in order to make them more 'competitive', which has caused an uproar amongst the students over there. making students pay in countries like that with low wages means even LESS will have access to higher education. i wonder how they will deal with it. many others will be in the boat too i'm sure.

^^^you are right about the fact that many european countries do live on handouts. Greece(an example i use because it is close to me, even though i don't live there) has announced GDP growths of 3.5-3.8 a year, which is quite high. But they receive about 4-5 billion euros a year from the EU, amongst other handouts, which probably make up at least half that figure. so i understand what you mean in that sense, these economies are not producing as much REAL wealth as what it can look at times, from a distance.

"Also, in the US, just because someone doesn't dress in Armani constantly or let themselves be driven around by a chaffeur doesn't mean that this person isn't possibly a millionaire. One of the wealthiest people I know drives a dirt-covered truck."

you don't have to tell me this. i know a guy that has around 15-20 million dollars worth of commercial property and he drives an old shit box from the 60's and gets around in tattered rags. :-)

"The reason that Europe is so backwards compared to the US is its obsession with the notion of 'equality (of assets/income)'. The US may have a much wider gap between the richest and the poorest, but the poorest still have, on average, a better quality of life than their European counterparts. So what if there are more multi-million and -billionaires?"

i'm not sure how true that is. the poorest in U.S having better quality of life statement. But you are right about the rest. the middle class in Australia(where i live) make the middle class over in most european countries i've been too seem below average.

But you look at Switzerland, the GDP is 'low' compared to the U.S, but they barely have any poverty or unemployment. i've been there, and people live reasonably well i think. not as bad as what you may think. i guess it depends on perspective. you do make some strong points though i'll give u that. And there is a reason why i never settled down in any of the European countries i lived in on a permanent basis after all :_)

interesting. But I've read that kind of thing before. a lot of the EU countries post dodgy GDP growth figures as well, and as more countries are becoming integrated, the less they are able to hide this fact. the standard criteria for 'admission' into the EU is nowhere near consistent. no wonder countries like Greece are struggling with the Euro. their economy was nowhere near good enough in the first place. And the same will happen with others too. it will be interesting to see what becomes of the EU in the next decade or so.

i mean, insofar as it will eventually become difficult for them to keep the 'weaker' countries from falling. the funds can only be spread out so far, and for a certain period of time. something has to give.

"Those countries (like Kull's Italy) will continue to wither and will suffer the most. Most smart people would just write them off for good, but they (obviously) still have a small chance if they take our lead."

yes. small chance, because they have already fallen so damn far behind already, and unless they can tap into some resources in poorer(unexplored areas) countries, they probably won't be able to achieve that much. And if there really is anything significant in say, the balkan area, for example, the U.S will move in and clean it up. so basically these countries have to learn to crawl first, when the U.S has been leading so aggressively for such a long period of time. most foreign investment seems to be pumped into bigger countries with ample land, labour and resources like China, not Europe. so these european countries won't be getting as much foreign investment as they think even when they cut red tape, because the growth potential just isn't there. at least not to the same degree, whereas China, and India, are growing economies that are just being tapped into.

You bunch of twats. Wake the fuck up! Your spending your whole lives debating useless shit because it makes you feel superior. If you spent your days meditating and striving for recall of your out of body experiences you would understand that there is more to existance on a third dimensional planet than trying to convince yourself that you are more enlightened than the people around you. Sure every soul is at a different stage of growth, experiencing a slightly different reality but every human being is god. Once you realize this you are completely free to create whatever reality you want to take part in. Competitive behaviour is no longer a requirement for the human species to survive, as is living in fear.

Fear and all the by-product emotions of it cannot exist on earth when she completes her cycle into the heart of the photon belt. Feel free to try again in another lifetime but why take soul development baby steps when you can make great leaps? The arrival is close at hand, Mother earth wants to experience total enlightenment through you. Will you make the journey with her?

Better than having no sense of humour like yourself. Laughter is the healing of soul. You should try it sometime

The whole thing is really entertaining.
Spooky1 the liar, who now calls himself "proud-infidel" and claims "not to be american" is too stupid to resist provocation, so he came out and started copying and pasting his bollocks again.
I skipped all of his posts like I always do, but it's enough to count them and read the reactions to them to see it's the same person, the 50-year old lifeless fat toothless redneck, who in his sick mind pretends to be married and having a job (he spends ALL of his time online, so that's clearly bullshit).

Here's what he looks like: http://spooky1.stumbleupon.com/

Gosh, has anyone actually praised Body Count's work (any album) as... good? They have always been dreadful! I had huge passionate arguments with friends years ago over their debut, which in my opinion was bad rock music with horrible lyrics played by bad musicians. That's what it was then, that what it still is today.

"Foucault and De Certeau wrote on that years ago. Language by nature contains power within it, which means whatever you say is always reinforcing an ideology, whether intentional or not. Even some power metal band singing about fire and desire is always reinforcing an ideology."

yeah i studied Foucault. But if language only serves to reinforce ideologies and strengthen or weaken existing power relations, that means that language, as a vehicle for ideology, at least nowadays, is self-effacing. what you believe or don't believe, at least on an individual level, means nothing in the grand scheme of things. i wonder if Foucault and the rest of the French academic relativists believe their own work to be as meaningless as all that? seems kind of pointless to me.

as far as metal goes, thrash metal was very ideologically loaded, as others here have pointed out. it wasn't just megadeth either. testament, exodus, metallica etc etc. they all wrote songs that were obviously political(directed at either politicians or the economy) or ones that were about the effects of certain governmental policies(i.e the effects of confinement etc etc). so metal and politics have enjoyed a close relationship for a number of decades now. And i, for one, get annoyed at how metal too often gets dismissed as being 'dullards music', where as Punk is looked at more seriously by academics and social commentators. Metal is just left by the wayside. i remember when i studied 'politics of rock' style subjects at university, metal was barely looked at.
