Europe's (as in members from France, Belgium, and the UK) ABORTED haven't made a bad album yet. However, I did find 2007's "Slaughtered & Apparatus: A Methodical Overture" to be a slight letdown from "The Archaic Abattoir". There is no question that the former is a good death/grind album (obviously, the score was 7/10), but it seemed that the band was in a stylistic transition, one that had them incorporating more melodic nuances, less calamity, and a cleaner sound. The songs could have been more distinct too. Of course, many a critic heaped higher praise on it than I, so chalk it up to that whole opinions-are-like-assholes thing. Needless to say, I was anxious to hear what ABORTED would do with the new full-length.

What they've done is made a better album that more effectively joins the melodic parts with the band's trademark rip-roaring riffs and raging-bull delivery. I'd even venture to say that "Strychnine.213" is a heavier album than "Slaughtered & Apparatus: A Methodological Overture" and the tracks are indeed more distinct. The result is a disc that you'll be more inclined to remember and have no qualms about listening to multiple times in a row.

So what's the big difference? That's the thing; it's less about "big" differences, than a whole lot of little qualities. First of all, there are numerous cool ‘n crushing riffs that jump right out of the mix. Sebastien Tuvi and Peter Goemaere really tear it up on the disc. Pay special attention to "The Chyme Congeries", "A Murmur in Decrepit Wits", and "Avarice of Vilification". You also get the staccato insanity of drummer Daniel Wilding; the beats on this one are just plain bad ass. Overall, the compositions are assembled in a way that maximizes the impact of every pace change and compositional twist, whether it be a particular riff that bridges two sections, a striking guitar solo that soars out of the calamity, or the occasional hook (e.g. "Ophiolatry On a Hemocite Platter"). Vocally, nothing has really changed, as Sven De Caluwe keeps it consistently (and distinctly) brutal, just like he always does (i.e. you'll need a lyric sheet). Don't look for Colin Marks' gruesome cover art to show up on Wal-Mart shelves either.

Aside from an Eric Rachel (THE RED CHORD, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, GOD FORBID) production that could stand to breathe more, "Strychnine.213" is another lesson in violence from ABORTED. Rather than compromise to win over a broader group of fans, the band has simply upped the dynamics without dulling the sharp edges.

Probably their worst CD by far, just really generic, almost deathcore bullshit.

What the fuck were you thinking Scott?

Once again, the bashers have to justify their hatred of an album based upon squarely fitting a band into some "core" hybrid that they MUST be in. God forbid fans just listen to what sounds good to them and not worry so much about sub-categorizing.

I've been into this band since disc one and I'll wholeheartedly agree that their sound has changed, but for the better.

These guys haven't pulled a Metallica or Cryptopsy, where their sound has become different from out of the blue. No, they've managed to still keep their brutality and not compromise what makes them Aborted. You can listen to this disc and still know what band you are listening to.

It's a great mix of slow, fast, brutal, melodic, and great all around death metal. Bravo to them for continuing to evolve. I will admit I like the last two a bit more than this one, but Aborted are like pizza or sex, even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

No rating, I don't believe in them. Numbers don't justify an album, the music does.

Been a fan since Engineering the Dead. Loved the in your face grinding they've done in the past, & love the evolving sound they are putting out today. You have to remember that Sven is the only original member; it's going to sound different due to that simple fact. The mentality and goal of Aborted is still there, just delivered in a different package. No one can argue that "Enterrement of an Idol" is one of the best songs they've written and would easily fit on Goremaggedon...no matter what the "haters" say, this is a band to follow. Each disc has been good in it's own right...

Aborted has always been a sick band, but if every release sounds just like the last, thats when i start to lose intrest. i think its a good thing that theyve changed it up a bit.

By the look of the bands font style name, I bet this band is either a black metal band or a grindcore band.

man, Deathcore isn't that bad, I hate labaling bands and putting them into categories. But you have to admit All Shall perish and beneath the massacre, and the red chord are great bands and I guess they are deathcore.

Aborted's new cd is far from deathcore people need to remember that all of these deathcore bands are influenced by Aborted so most metal fans are really tired of the deathcore scene and unfortunately Aborted now gets lumped with that tired genre me personally i love Aborted always have and always will the new sounds nothing like Job for a Queerboy or the other deathcore shit that's been flooding the market lately sure it's no "Goremageddon" or "Engineering The Dead" but it's still a solid release

Heard a bit of this sounds solid like their last couple. One of the better Death-esque bands doing the rounds.

They've definte become more 'accessible' over the years, don't think thats a bad thing.

Im a casual Aborted fan.. I own Engineering The Dead, Goremageddon and Archaic Abattoir...
But after multiple songs, I find the music to become quite stale and repetetive, and I turn it off...
If these songs are more distinctive, I might check it out?

really surprised they put out a new cd after just releasing S&A not long ago. but if you give S&A a 7 and this an 8, then you're not a true aborted fan. this new album isn't totally deathcore but there are a lot of influences on the cd, and it just comes across as bland. the intro song is real cool, and there are a few decent songs, but the cd is a stale offering by a normally very good band. and where the hell have the higher pitched vocals gone?

i've got archaic abbatoir, s&a, and recently bought goremageddon. Have only listened to a few samples of the new one, but it sounds good. i'll admit some of the songs aren't distinctive, but i don't mind. i'm definitely addicted to their sound and am glad they haven't changed too much.

Everything this band has ever done has been nothing short of exceptional. Keep up the good work.

Deathcore is riding the Aborted trend, not vice versa. That's not to say that I dislike deathcore or would rag on it, but honestly where else could it have come from? That is...if you call deathcore a genre. Personally I'd rather it just be called death.

the vocals in aborted cds, mainly the last 3 have been fucking killer. svens vocals are extremely powerful and brutal. the only person that i think can belt it out better than him is barney from napalm death, no one barks like that dude.

Yawntastic.

Not offensively bad, just boring.
Was he playing on a toy drum set? Horrible snare drum sound.
I've gotta agree that there is a distinct breakdowny core sound on some of the songs which = suck.

Im I the only person here who likes it?
Ive been an Aborted fan for awhile and i am pleased to say i liked all there releases. Some more then others and this is no exception. Some songs are preety catchy in a good way, the production is very good and all the intruments sound good. M yonly complaints would be Sven's vocals, there not bad but sometimes go to the deathcore extent. To me thats the only deathcore influence on here but overall its good.

My fav songs on here are Ophiolatry On A Hemocite Platter,I35, and Pestiferous Subterfuge.

7.5/10
