Chris Considers the Week in Wrestling Music

Hey everyone and welcome to the second edition of Chris Reviews the Week in Wrestling Music: a partnership between Roadrunner Records and Wrestling News World. In this week’s blog I shall be discussing ECW General Manager Tiffany’s new entrance music, the official theme song for Survivor Series and bringing you the next essential WWE track! Please read and be sure to drop me an email with your feedback to a_agreement_called_forever@hotmail.com

First off thank you so much for all of the overwhelming feedback I received from all around the world last week! It was great chatting to so many of you about matters both metal and wrestling and hope I can continue to do so!

Now something that came up from last week was the previous theme song for Smackdown and who composed it. According to my Itunes, Rise Against were the composer for the song although the artist was credited as WWE so after doing some searching around the internet over the past week I have discovered that Itunes is actually incorrect and ‘If You Rock Like Me’ was actually an in house piece of music composed by Jim Johnston. So my apologies for this mistake as I was just going from the information I had to hand and my thanks to everyone who pointed this out!

Some of you may be aware that current WWE superstar Chris Jericho is in a metal band named Fozzy. Now Fozzy are really rather good and I was lucky enough to catch their set at Download Festival 2005. Starting off as primarily a classic metal covers band, Fozzy have progressed to the point they now have famous metal figures such as Zakk Wylde making guest appearances on their tracks. Earlier this year Fozzy signed a deal with Riot! Entertainment out of Australia and their fourth studio album ‘Chasing The Grail’ is scheduled to be released early next year. Fozzy have also released a live album ‘Remains Alive’ which I currently have on order from Australia and as soon as I receive it I shall bring you a track by track review in this very blog. As soon as Chris confirms a release date for ‘Chasing The Grail’ I shall bring you a Fozzy essential countdown every week until the album is released!

So on to this week’s reviews and once again I shall be using a 5 star rating system.

ECW General Manager Tiffany Theme – ‘I’m Insatiable’

For those that don’t know Tiffany is the general manager of WWE’s third brand: ECW. Despite being quite sexy, Tiffany is pretty appalling on the microphone and often comes across as though she is reading from a script. She has previously used Torrie Wilson’s old theme music: ‘Á Girl Like That’ by Eleventh Hour. A couple of week’s ago she was finally given her own music which I can only assume is a WWE in house production as I have been searching all across the internet to try and discover the artist for this song to no result. As is the case with many of the diva theme songs, this song is terrible and does not suit Tiffany’s character whatsoever. The lyrics of the song are about being insatiable and not being able to get enough boys or sex which is hardly appropriate for an authority figure within WWE! There is a rather tame dance beat which runs throughout the song but the focus here is on the lyrics. This will no doubt be included on the next WWE The Music release but this is certainly not one worth recommending. Sometimes if the song is bad but it suits the character (for example MVP) I would rate the song higher but this is just plain awful.

Chris’ Star Rating: ½*

*Note, if more details are release on this song such as the artist or composer I shall be sure to update you!*

Official Theme Song For WWE Survivor Series – Art of Dying: Get Thru This

WWE seem to have be going through something of a major change when it comes to selecting artists for their pay per views as for the majority of 2008 and early 2009 they used major artists such as Metallica and Guns N Roses to provided their pay per view themes. However more recently smaller bands such as Maylene & the Sons of Disaster (Bragging Rights) and Sick Puppies (Extreme Rules) have been used. Presumably this is being done as a cost cutting measure. However as Survivor Series is historically known as a ‘big four’ pay per view (the other three being The Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania and Summerslam) I was expecting a major band to be brought on board. However WWE have opted for relatively unknown Canadian five piece: Art of Dying to provide the theme. Art of Dying have previously toured with both Seethe and Disturbed and were nominated for ‘Best New Group’ in the Canadian Radio Music Awards. Having done a bit of research into the band I can conclude that Art of Dying are quite content to sound like a cheap Nickelback imitation, without really trying to do anything new or exciting with their music. Song’s like ‘I Will Be There’ and ‘Inside it’s Raining’ are fairly bland and generic listens. However ‘Get Thru This’ is probably the best song they have done so far as it has a pretty catchy riff and gruff vocals and the song reminds me of a cross between Nickelback at their most rocky and Sevendust at their most melodic. Incidentally this song was written in 2007 so quite why it is being used for a 2009 pay per view is anyone guess! Incidentally this song was written in 2007 so quite why it is being used for a 2009 pay per view is anyone guess! I would say if you are fans of bands such as Creed, Alter Bridge and Nickelback you will probably enjoy this song and the band in general, it is a little generic for my tastes and is not the best pay per view theme of the year but it is defiantly not the worst either! You can find ‘Get Thru This’ on Art of Dying’s self titled debut album which is available from Amazon at the following link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Dying/dp/B000IHY1BY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1258668725&sr=1-1

The Ultimate Wrestling Playlist #2 – Breaking Point – One of a Kind (Rob Van Dam’s theme song) – Found on WWF: Forceable Entry (2002, Sony)  and Breaking Point: Coming of Age (2001, Wind Up)

Without a doubt one of my favourite wrestlers of all time is Rob Van Dam. Anyone who has seen this guy wrestle knows that he always have 110% and captivated live audiences all over the world, first in the original incarnation of ECW and then WWE. Rob took some time out from wrestling in 2007 although has recently started making some indy appearances again and had a special guest spot in this year’s Royal Rumble leading to much speculation (and hope) that he may be returning to WWE at some point in the near future. This song captured exactly what Rob was all about and as soon as that first ‘One of a Kind’ hit, the crowd would erupt and Rob would make his way to the ring doing his trademark R…V...D pose. What Breaking Point basically did with this song was take WWE’s generic in house music for Rob and metal it up! A storming riff fluctuates throughout this song and combined with a good beat, the lyrics were absolutely spot on for Rob’s character as he truly was and still is one of a kind! This is another song that gets a good response in my DJ sets and is one of those songs you just want to jump around to. I thoroughly recommend checking this one out! An interesting trivia note, Rob himself appeared in the video for ‘One of a Kind’ which you can view at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a5aQfnjl9c
