Chris Considers The Week In Wrestling Music: Fozzy, Rev Theory and More!

Hey everyone and welcome to this week’s edition of Chris Considers The Week In Wrestling Music. In this week’s blog I shall be reviewing the new Fozzy song, Jeri-Show’s entrance music and bringing you the next essential wrestling track. As always please feel free to submit feedback to: a_agreement_called_forever@hotmail.com

First off my apologies I have not posted for a few weeks, I was on away on holiday over the Christmas Period and then spent New Year with family and friends so this is the first time I have really been able to sit down and write. Another thing I found coming to the end of last year was that there was not actually new wrestling related music to discuss every week but luckily there is already a whole lot of new things to talk about so far this year that should at least take us to the end of January!

I would like to send out my deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan, the Avenged Sevenfold drummer who tragically passed away on Monday 28th December 2009. This is a huge loss to the metal community and another sad instance of a young star taken from us far too early. I have been a fan of Sevenfold since their early days and have been lucky enough to catch them live on numerous occasions, most recently at Sonnisphere festival here in the UK last year, where they tore the house down. Rest in peace Rev, you will be missed.

On a lighter note, a big thank you to each and every one of you who read my blog and purchased Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine. The mission was a success and the song beat the X-Factor to the coveted UK Christmas number one spot delivering a huge FU to Simon Cowell and manufactured pop crap in the process. Rage have already pledged much of the royalty money to charity and will be playing a free gig over here in the UK this year! I cannot wait. This is hopefully a sign of a change in attitude in the UK music scene and something I have been hoping to see since the nu-metal hey day of the 90s.

So on with this week’s reviews

Jeri-Show Theme - Maylene & The Sons of Disaster: Crank The Walls Down

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OQhCWzOi9c

Alabama six piece Maylene and the Sons of Disaster have become something of a WWE regular recently, having performed the Bragging Rights theme song as well as penning this song for the former Unified Tag Team Champions: Chris Jericho & The Big Show. Now I know this has been out awhile but one of my readers: Lance, actually requested that I review this seeing as how it is a particularly metal effort so I am more than happy to do so. It is a shame that Jeri-Show is probably no longer working as a tag team as Chris Jericho was banned from RAW after Jeri-Show lost their tag title rematch with De-Generation X and looks set to work exclusively on Smackdown for the time being. Jeri-Show revitalised the tag team division in WWE during 2009 and took it to new heights with excellent feuds and matches with the likes of Cryme Tyme, MVP & Mark Henry and De-Generation X. Chris Jericho and The Big Show made the tag belts feel important again, as they are both established main event talents and it pretty much guaranteed us at least one tag match on every pay per view. Hopefully DX will continue this but something tells me that Triple H will want to be in the Royal Rumble! When Jeri-Show was first formed after Edge went down injured, WWE used a horrible mish-mash of the Chris Jericho and The Big Show’s themes that sounded really truly terrible. Thankfully WWE realised how bad the song was and hired Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, who created this storming metal anthem. Snarling vocals sing the familiar theme lyrics over a really heavy and chugging riff. I actually prefer the Jericho parts of this song to his original music! This is as hard hitting and metal as any WWE song ever released and you can be sure it will be added to my essential wrestling playlist once it is commercially released (this is why I haven’t done Christian’s theme yet, for those who have enquired) I cannot recommend this song highly enough and cannot wait for WWE to release another CD so I can get hold of this!

Official Theme Song For WWE Royal Rumble – Fozzy: Martyr No More

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HswfkRR6VYA

I had already decided to review this song, when WWE announced that it will be one of the themes to this months Royal Rumble pay per view. Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy have gone from strength to strength since their formation and 2010 is set to be a big year for them, with the release of their fourth studio album: Chasing The Grail later in the month. This is the debut single from that album and truly is one hell of a song. Whilst I always enjoyed Fozzy’s covers and pranks, I was delighted when Chris took the band in a new direction with the release of 2005s All That Remains and Martyr No More maintains that more serious direction from the band. This song defiantly has that classic rock tinge to it that Fozzy’s previous music has done, which is defiantly not a bad thing when it is done as well as this. This song has a guest solo from Annihilator’s Jeff Waters which is really well done and another example of how far Fozzy have come in the music world. I have always loved Chris’ vocals and they are superb here along with some truly excellent lyrics, a catchy riff and solid beat all make for a very enjoyable song. This simply solidifies what we already knew and that is Fozzy are a genuinely awesome metal band. I have already purchased this through I-Tunes and will be sampling it in my DJ sets next weekend to see what people think. I imagine it will go down very well. I really recommend checking out Martyr No More and purchasing it from I-Tunes. The Ultimate Wrestling Playlist #5 – Rev Theory – Voices (Randy Orton’s Theme) – Found On WWE The Music Volume 9 Voices (2009, Sony)

So awesome was this theme song that WWE named their whole Volume 9 album after it! Randy Orton is something of a controversial wrestler, seen by some as one of the greatest modern day heels whereas others find him to be a main event hog, monotone on the mic and incredibly boring to watch. Personally I am a big fan of Randy Orton and feel he has defiantly earned his spot as the number one heel on the RAW brand. His wrestling style is very slow and methodical but against the right opponent this is very effective, as seen most recently in an outstanding bout with Kofi Kingston at TLC. Of course when faced with someone like John Cena, who soaks up all punishment and hulks up to overcome the odds, he is not so interesting to watch and a combination of Orton, Cena and Triple H dominating the title scene on RAW last year made for some very dull and repetitive viewing. However the fact remains Randy is very good at making you hate him with some truly sadistic and brutal actions, making him certainly one of the more interesting figures in the WWE PG era. Randy Orton detested his old theme music Burn In My Light and campaigned for a long time to get it changed. When Randy became a top draw in WWE, Vince finally agreed to his wish and hired Rev Theory to work with Orton and write this track specifically for his character. The lyrics ‘I hear voices in my head, they council me, they understand, they talk to me’ are so appropriate to Orton as he will often seemingly snap for no reason and commit random acts of violence on members of the WWE roster. The slow pacing and chugging riff of this song is perfect for Randy’s slow, measured stalk to the ring every week and despite it not being the heaviest song in the world, I do not think there has been a theme song more suited to its user since Rob Van Dam and Breaking Point. I wish WWE would hire artists to work with wrestlers more often as the results are always spectacular! I recommend getting hold of this song and blasting it out of your car whilst driving around!

The Ultimate Wrestling Playlist

2: Breaking Point                 One of a Kind          (Rob Van Dam Theme)
3: Alter Bridge                      Metalingus               (Edge Theme)
4: Drowning Pool                  The Game                 (Triple H Theme)
5: Rev Theory                        Voices                       (Randy Orton Theme)

Here is another new feature for this blog where I will recommend an album that I have been listening too and enjoying over the past week

This Week I Can’t Stop Listening To… Winds Of Plague: Decimate The Weak (2008, Century Media)

Decimate The Weak

Brutal deathcore tinged with black metal elements, this second album from Californian six piece Winds of Plague is one hell of an exciting listen. Songs like The Impaler, Decimate The Weak and Unbreakable just make you want to headbang! The band are playing in the UK later this year alongside Parkway Drive and Despised Icon and I will defiantly be there to check them out!
