Probably the most "controversial" album in the CoF cannon -- and a great example of why (at this count) nine albums into their career, Dani Filth's mob is nowhere near their creative grave.
"Thornography" pushes the limits of Cradle of Filth as a straight up riff-driven metal band -- pairing down the mega-symphonics of past releases to simplerfare. "I Am The Thorn", "Tonight In Flames" -- are great metal songs from start to finish.
There's definitely a few moments where Cradle steps out from formula. "Foetus of a New Day Kicking" is a great three and a half minute schythe-y hook of a song that features Mr. Filth actually SINGING .... and sounding remakably like Alice Cooper.
And yes, they do cover that old Heaven 17 chestnut "Temptation" which really didn't sit too well with the faithful as the record's first single and video. Yes, it was an attempt to recapture the "magic" of the prior record "Nymphetamine"'s title track. On it's own, it's still a corker with great gritty female vocals courtesy of Brit rock babe Dirty Harry. It kinda rules.
Got a feeling "Thornography" is gonna be a disc that Cradle fans will keep coming back to -- when they just want to rock.
