Roadrunner "As Daylight Dies" - Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage
As Daylight Dies
Artist: Killswitch Engage
Release Date: November 21, 2006
Not too many bands are credited with pioneering or defining an entire genre, but that's certainly the case for Killswitch Engage when it comes to the melodic mixture of metal and hardcore that is their signature sound. Often copied, but never equalled, by unntold scores of other bands, that combustible blend is once again delivered with unparalleled results on the band's new album, As Daylight Dies, in stores now.

Feedback starts to swell up on the opening title track and the whole thing comes down like a ton of steel girders. "This place is evil!" barks Jones and the riffs come crashing down.
For the most part "ADD" is a more challenging record than the prior two. There's plenty of great songs: KsE staples "My Curse", "The Arms of Sorrow" and "This is Absolution". However, this one is full of twists and turns. "For You" and "Still Beats Your Name" exert pure Killswitch-ian muscle bounding from beauty to brutality on a thin dime. Chock it up to drummer Justin Foley who finally puts his full creative stamp on a KsE record, having come in on "Heartache" halfway through the writing now thoroughly ready to unleash his School of Percussion trained hell.
The double whammy of "Eye of the Storm" and "Break the Silence" is a actually a back to back shot of the emotion and riffing that makes KsE the great band they are. Buried deep into the album, this is a great and very overlooked whallop of classic KsE might.
The real surprise comes in the shape of the almost Crowbar-like dirge "Desperate Times"; a sonic crawl completely unlike anything the Western Mass mob had attempted -- slow and low with the tempo like a tractor-pull for the soul. Definitely some of the best vocals and lyrics Jones has delivered to date.
And yeah, buy the special edition with the now-classic cover of Dio's "Holy Diver". You miss that and you're missing out on a real moment in not just Killswitch history but in a continuum of small men, capes, swords and cross-dressing damsels in distress.
