The "Pray For Villains" Artwork is based on the title track on the record.
The chorus goes " They Pray For Villains when their heroes let them down."
The concept of the Villain saving the day - when all else fails you turn your eyes towards the badass that gets the job done. Not the clean cut guy - often big talking, slow acting, lacking in spirit and conviction!
I needed something graphic to tie into the hero/villain idea.
I personally have been collecting Owls for some time and the Owl in many different cultures is seen as both the hero and villain.
In Ireland an Owl that enters a house must be killed at once, for if it flies away it will takes the luck of the house with it.
In Australia, Aborigines believe bats represent the souls of men and Owls the souls of woman. Owls are therefore sacred in their culture because your sister is an Owl and the Owl is your sister.
For the Aztecs, one of their evil gods wore a screech Owl on his head and in the Celtic culture, the Owl is the sign of the Underworld.
So, the OWL was the obvious choice as I wanted to feel as connected to the artwork as I do to the music and also give DevilDriver another icon to work with and even further define us a band!

So we bring you

If this isn't the best release of 2009 (and one of the top in recent years), I don't know what is. There isn't a single throw-away track, everything is blistering and vicious, and the cover of Wasted Years puts the icing on this already brutal metal masterpiece. the regular version of the album leaked on the internet and of course i downloaded it. i had high expectations after listening to Pray for Villains when that was available for download from RR. the rest of the album is heavy sounding and the drum tracks are just ridiculous. John Boecklin has definitely out done himself and i can tell a huge difference in his drumming abilities with every album. kudos for that one. the only thing that bothered me was the fact that a few of the songs are on the slower side as compared to The Last Kind Words. the song I've Been Sober reminds alot of Sin and Sacrifice from Fury of our Maker's Hand. which is fine by me as i liked both songs but it just was a turn away from the speed that i heard in Last Kind Words. also there arent as many solos in this new album. i like solos just like the next guy but i can do without them. i kinda missed them on this album as i thought some songs could have used a small one in some places. but all in all this album is awesome if u already like DevilDriver and that it has the same aggressive sound of Last Kind Words but i dont think it will attract too many new fans. i might be wrong but who knows. just my opinion and i do plan on ordering the special edition when it officially released cuz i did like it enough to spend the extra money to get the special stuff. i did give the album a 5 out of 5 but if i could i would give a 4.75 out of 5.
