When JVZ says "Been there, done that", at Skynyrds live shows, he aint kidding.....but I didnt realize he was talking about his song lyrics.
In songs about the "simple life" by the JVZ era Skynyrd, the Ed King/JVZ collaboration, "Pure and Simple", from the "1991" album, said it first, and much, much better.
Did'nt they also "leave their doors unlocked" in the funky Ed King/JVZ penned "Kiss Your Freedom Goodbye", from the excellent "The Last Rebel" album?.
My point is, we've heard these cliches and simple sentiments from JVZ before....in much better songs. Im sorry, but this song sounds like "filler" material to me, and I dont like it. The guitar work is pedestrian, and I cant even hear a piano (maybe an organ). Whats up with that?
I know folks will think Im being too critical of the band, and I wish I heard it differently. You gotta admit (cmon, you can do it, its ok, its America!) this song is not as good as other offerings from Skynyrd, about the same subject. Im just not excited about this song. Im bored with the "Simple Life", I guess. Its a "been there, done that, heard it before" kind of thing.........and they "done it" better....years ago.
But hey, the good news is, theres still 11 songs left on the "God and Guns" album, so there is hope!
