I personally like the way they mixed the last few albums. It did have a little less depth but it gave it a real studio feel, kinda like the second release of Metropolis II. I love that sound. Cuz when you hear it live, it's almost like hearing a totally new set. Plus the studio feel is just awesome. for those who haven't recorded, once you do it, you love any track that brings you taht feel.

And it can never be too loud!! THIS IS METAL!... as long as it's balanced..

I agree it has to be loud but balanced. I also agree with you about the mixing being fine.I dont care what the the new CD sounds like.I just know that its going to be different and Epic.Iv been a Dream Theater fan for 8 years now and I have never been disapointed by anything thay have put out.

Great news.

But: PLEASE, PLEASE don't use loundness war on it! Latest Metallica alboum without loudnes war would be much better album. It's really hard to listen - disturbances in sound are too high.

I hope DT will avoid it :)

I can't wait !! But the band should hire Dirk Ulrich of Germany for this album. Dirk Ulrich and Paul Northfield would be a killer team on Dirk's equipment !! Mark my words. James LaBrie and Dirk Ulrich worked together on the TSR album and that was OUT OF THIS WORLD !!

Dude we need a real PROGRESSIVE album not some hard and fast metal release. Go listen nto TOT if thats what you want. DT really need to go back to what they do best here. I see this as a pivitol point in their career. They cannot afford to fall victim to generic metal with tech elements like SC was.Dont get me wrong, SC was and is a great album, but DT need to dig deep here and write a REAL prog album. They need to write THEIR music, THEIR way.Aso someone mentioned an outside producer.I shudder, only to think back to FII.I agree though, Steve Wilson would be a VERY interesting addition. That will never happen though.Anyway, bring on the prog! » Add Comment   » Close Comments  » Report Abuse

Firstly, I completely agree with Spickelmier -- don't screw up the mixing again. The music in the last few albums has lacked depth in the low end--why play real drums if you want them to sound like plastic recycling bins?

Also...hey Roadrunner -- did this post really warrant an email notification? How about some solid dates..some sound/video samples?

Hire a new intern that knows how to save their spamming for real news!

God, I can't wait. I just hope it's mixed properly this time, I don't understand why Petrucci and Portnoy allowed it to get so screwed up last go 'round. Enough loudness already, the drums sounded terrible. Wouldn't it be awesome if they got Steven Wilson to produce and/or mix...he works magic with everybody else.

On that note, anyone else think that they should bring in an outside producer? I feel like they would benefit from a fresh perspective.

Dream Theater used to work with outside producers back in the nineties, but Mike Portnoy felt suffocated by the label and almost quit the band. Ever since Scenes they have been self-produced. Also, they have never really been ones to care much about "fan-pleasing." They have always had the stance that they write the music they love and if people like it, great, if not, oh well.

Also, I thought the mixes were fine on the last album, don't know what you guys are talking about. » Add Comment   » Close Comments  » Report Abuse

Shh.. your trying to sound too smart.
The productions on the older ones sound a little bad cause they like 20 years old, but part from that there production always been good. » Add Comment   » Close Comments  » Report Abuse
