Theory of a Deadman bassist Dean Back was recently interviewed by GateHouse News Service, and talked about how modern conveniences like cell phones and wireless Internet have changed rock musicians' lives.

"There are a lot of phone calls, and opportunities to Skype and video conference and iChat and stuff like that,” he says. “I can’t imagine the bands of the 1970s when they went and toured with no cell phones—up to the 1990s, really. There were just postcards and letters and a pay phone would be their only communication. I could not imagine that."

He says technology doesn't just help musicians stay in touch with family on the road; it can also be a tool in the songwriting process. "You no longer have to be in the same room," he says, explaining that the members of Theory can email riffs back and forth to each other, and write songs that way.
