Roadrunner Records TOP 10 of 2008

Sam Roon, New Media Content Editor

  1. There is no greater band in my opinion than Opeth right now... except maybe Wintersun, but they haven't done anything in a while. The newest Opeth installation Watershed, is absolutely amazing and worth every penny. Metalhead or rocker, or however you identify your musical alter ego, this is an album you should own.
  2. This is the greatest band on earth... MINE! Hah. Well, true that the band is mine, I feel that it is justified that I put the album here because I listen to it all the time... not because I don't remember how to play the songs, but because it is a great CD to listen to. See for yourself!
  3. Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
I got into Amon Amarth very recently after seeing them live. All I can say is WOW. This band is badass and this years release is amazing. Ollie was telling me their live show is what their band is all about. Which makes it even better that the album is so amazing.
  4. Judas Priest - Nostradamus
Judas Priest comes in at #4 for me because I'm in love with my top 3, but for surprising, these guys are #1. This is by far the most amazing thing I've heard from a band in a long time. When I talked to KK Downing about the CD, he was talking about Nostradamus like it was this baby they'd wanted to make for a very long time. You could tell he liked it as much as the fans.
  5. Death Angel - Killing Season
Technical, fast-as-hell, brutal thrash with bigger balls than the stage can handle.  Killing Season is years in the making for Death Angel and one of the best thrash album in recent times, and watching them perform the tracks flawlessly live added icing to the already way-too-sweet cake!
  6. Kiuas - The New Dark Age
Kiuas is another one that I saw live before hearing the CD. I thought they were great on stage and only days later their album came across my desk. The New Dark Age is in constant rotation. If you haven't heard Kiuas, I highly recommend checking them out.
  7. Kalmah - For the Revolution
Kalmah's "For the Revolution" will rip your face off. They were the highlight of the Tuska festival in Finland for me last summer, and you NEED to know their name.
  8. Honestly, I expected this album to suck pretty badly. My hope was that it could live up to what the hype was feeding us. Guess what? It's one of my favorite Max albums to date. There is an energy on this record that is unmatched in most other Cavalera projects. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the stuff leading up to CC, but god damn this shit is brutal!
  9. Moonsorrow - Tulimyrsky
Don't be stupid. Listen to this record. When I sat down with Ville last year, he was telling me about his plans for this record and when I asked why Moonsorrow songs are so long, he gave me the best answer: The songs end when they are ready to end. The music flows until the song is done. Moonsorrow is a deeper... no... meaner version of what a lot of Melodic Metal tries to be. Moonsorrow sings in Finnish because they aren't trying to sell themselves to a worldwide audience; they just want to create good music. Tulimyrsky is awesome.
  10. Zimmers Hole - When You Were Shouting at the Devil...We Were in League with Satan
You know how there are some bands that you step outside the norm... and you can't even identify why, but you just love it? - a guilty pleasure if you will. That is this album. I can't tell you why you should listen to it... I'm not even telling you that you should... I'm just telling you that for me, it's one of those bands.

Sam, THANK YOU for giving Kalmah their due! They made #2 on my Top 10 list, and I'm glad someone else recognizes their mastery. Rock on, dude!

It's great to finally see some Kalmah recognition. Someone needs to realise this band has a well earned rapidly growing following.

finally, someone gives respect for killing season! Death Angel are better than ever & deserve great recognition for both this album and their live performance.
Also agree about Zimmer's Hole, cool as shit!

Chris @ WSOU & Porkupine_Pie, hell yeah, the band is amazing and this album is excellent. I was watching them this summer and asking why I had never heard of them before... just amazing.

Adrian, that Death Angel album is so awesome.. I'm surprised it got so little press... Did you get to see them on tour? They were absolutely flawless performing it. That band is just incredible.

Kevin Young, I think Kiuas is a good band, I think the album is great, I saw them again on New Years Eve in Helsinki, and they weren't as good as when I saw them this summer, but never-the-less, the CD is good, and that's what a top-10 ALBUM list is for right?! haha!
